Another Verbal--William Nesselt DE
This article states UMass has picked up another 2009 verbal from William Nesselt, a 6-3 240 pd DE from powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida.
He was second team 6A-5A-4A All-Broward County.
Lots of action images of Nesselt here.
Played in the Dade-Broward All-Star game.
Key quote from this article:"William Nesselt, DL, 6-3, 245, St. Thomas: Emerged as one of the best defensive line prospects in the state by having a productive off season and making plays all year. Quality talent that is only getting better."
Thanks to a special Blog reader who brought this to my attention!

Envelope please: The last scholarship goes to ....
Dick Beck (left) paid Temple forward by producing kicker Brandon McManus.
By Mike Gibson
It's all over but the shouting.
Or, in this case, the shout outs, via texting and phone calls.
Nobody does that better than the current Temple football coaching staff.
2009 Temple Football RecruitsNobody works harder to get verbals than Al Golden and company and nobody works harder than Al and and the guys on his staff to keep them.
According to Scout.com's list.
According to Rivals.com's list.
Once again, Mark D'Onofrio worked his magic in New Jersey where the Owls landed a healthy portion of this year's class. D'Onofrio is as aggressive in his job at Temple as he was on the field at Penn State.
And that's good for us.
So D'Onofrio, a Temple treasure in my mind, deserves an extra special shout out from this corner.
So does Golden, Matt Rhule, Ed Foley and every member of the staff.
Since there are no more scholarships left, it's time to analyze the current crop.
I think this class is the best of the four Al Golden classes and, more importantly, the most complementary. It won't say that on Scout.com or Rivals.com because they are only interested in the three- and four-star guys. The reality, though, is that this is the best. Need areas were addressed that weren't completely addressed in prior classes.
When we went into this recruiting season, I said we needed at least three need areas addressed:
- A big-time JUCO QB who can throw on the run and had a solid record of achievement (I really wanted Adam DiMichele back, but no amount of sweet-talking the NCAA is going to get me that medical redshirt);
- A big-time fullback who can get the short yardage when needed;
- A big-time kicker;
We got the kicker and the fullback in Brandon McManus of North Penn and Blaze Caponegro of Wall Township.
I will now hold my breath and live without the quarterback, Garrett Barnas, who will now play out the final two years of his college career elsewhere. I hope and pray Barnas gets a shot at 1A ball. The two-time All-American JUCO QB got royally screwed by Syracuse, who pulled his scholarship a month after he became the first verbal of the current Orange recruiting class. Barnas is a class kid, a 3.4 GPA, by all accounts a superb leader, an incredible athlete (holds the Illinois state record in the 110 hurdles) and can throw BBs and the deep ball on the dead run, just like Adam DiMichele.
Oh yeah. One more thing. He wanted to play at Temple.
He could have easily been the last verbal of Temple's recruiting class.
Give the Temple coaches some props, though. They took a long, hard look at his highlights and said they'd love to have him but didn't want to commit three QB scholarships in the one class.
Which brings me to the final scholarship recipient, another quarterback who can move and has a high record of achievement, Chris Coyer, who committed the night the Owls were blowing kisses at Barnas (figuratively speaking, of course).
Chris, of Oakton High in Vienna (Va.) appears to be the final scholarship in this class.
What was that they say in the Bible?
"The last shall be first and the first shall be last."
Well, that's been the case for a lot of players who got the last available Temple scholarship.
Kee-Ayre Griffin of St. Peter's Prep (N.J.) got the last scholarship from Golden's first class. Temple fans had to wait a couple of years for him to arrive on campus, but he's shown flashes of greatness so far as the Owls' starting tailback.
That's worked out pretty well, I'd say.
Often, our last available scholarship has turned out to be our best player.
When I worked at the Doylestown Intelligencer, I did a story on a senior offensive guard named Dick Beck. He was by far the best offensive lineman I had ever seen play high school football in the dynamic Central Bucks West program, yet was largely under-recruited.
I asked Dick who was recruiting him.
"Towson State and West Chester State," Dick said.
"Whoa, hold the phone, Dick," I said.
I immediately started a letter-writing campaign for Dick to play at Temple.
I wrote letters to then-Temple coach Bruce Arians and sent him the story I wrote about Beck. I also sent Arians a DVD (in those days known as a VHS tape).
Bruce wrote me back (before the days of email), "Mike, I love the kid, too. We project him as a center. He's a little small and I'm involved with two other bigger centers. If those two guys fall through, we'll see what we can do."
I wrote back and said I've never seen an offensive guard (he was that then) pancake so many defenders on one play so consistently and in so many games. Those two guys Arians talked about fell through. Dick Beck got the last Temple scholarship. He then became the sole captain of Temple's last winning team, the 1990 squad that went 7-4.
When Dick committed, CB West head coach Mike Pettine (Sr., not the Jets' defensive coordinator) called me and gave me the exclusive.
"Bruce told us the story and all I want to say is that Dick owes you a dinner," Mike said.
Dick never took me to dinner.
Being a captain of a 7-4 Temple team is paid in full in my eyes.
Now Beck has become a spectacular head coach at North Penn (his record is 83-15 with one large school state title) and has paid Temple forward with a terrific kicker, Brandon McManus, who will win a lot of games for Temple.
I have a feeling Coyer will follow this legacy and make Temple very proud as well.

Star of USA Today's No. 1 high school team takes first classes at Temple
One of the coolest things about new Temple football recruit Deonte Parker is that he once played for a team called the Lakeland (Fla.) Dreadnaughts.
Dreadnaughts, of British warship fame in World War I.
Another cool thing is that he once was a star at Lakeland when it was ranked No. 1 in the USA Today's Super 25 high school teams. Here is an account of a win over Cape Corral (Fla.) that year.
That's not the coolest thing about the 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back, though.
The coolest thing is that he was sitting behind a desk in classroom at Temple University on Tuesday, enrolled as a Temple student.
The only known
photo of Deonte Parker
According to various reports yesterday and today on OwlsDaily.com, Parker is one of three new Temple players enrolled in the school and eligible for spring practice.
The other two are defensive end Alex Jackson (also from Florida) and defensive back Maurice Jones, last a cornerback at Hargrave Military Academy. Those are just the confirmed guys. We're scouring the Temple class list for names of other probable Temple verbals already enrolled. Once we confirm some other names are enrolled and taking classes, we'll include them here.
So far, only three guys in the current JUCO group.
They'll join at least 22 high school guys when the official class is announced early in Feb.
All big-time guys.
All could have gone anywhere.
All chose Temple.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There will be changes to the FCS National Championship game starting in 2010. The game will be moved to January on the eve of the FBS National Championship.
In my view, this will be a good move. In the current setting, making travel plans for what amounts to the week before Christmas, is difficult. The move also allows a bye-week during the regular season, which would have been lost with addition of an additional week in the playoffs to accommodate the increase in playoff teams to twenty.

Matty Vautour reports that Kevin Morris' bid to become UMass head coach is gathering momentum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Correction: I confused the Day brothers. The Eagles have two other coaches with UMass connections. WR coach Ryan Day played at New Hampshire and his brother Tim lettered for UMass in the early 2000's.
BC linebacker coach Bill McGovern has been mentioned in the UMass coaching search, but now it looks like he may be elevated to defensive coordinator with the Eagles. McGovern had two coaching stints with UMass. He was DB coach 87-90 and defensive coordinator in '92 abd '93.

Bowling Green just hired Clawson as its new head coach. Six Falcons were named to the MAC all-academic team. The Blog thinks its a good bet Bowling Green won't have any problems with his offense.

Garrett, we hardly knew ye
There are three lit candles in the front of the sanctuary at St. Albert's The Great parish in Huntingdon Valley today, side by side.
Each candle represents a prayer for the three remaining scholarship quarterbacks at Temple:
Chris Coyer
Those are for the three guys left, after the news that the Temple coaching staff (nicely) told two-time JUCO first-team All-American Garrett Barnas to take his considerable talents elsewhere. Barnas had expressed an interest to play football at Temple. It's not every day a two-time college All-American who runs a 4.45 40, has thrown 59 touchdown passes in the last two years and has the Illinois state record in the 110 hurdles knocks on your door and asks if he can play on your team.
With Temple's luck over the last 30 or so years, he'll probably (a) replace Mark Sanchez as the USC starting quarterback; or (b) start for Villanova in late August against Temple.
Our tongue is firmly implanted in cheek here, but you get the drift.
Garrett, we hardly knew ye.
So now we are at three and that's likely where we'll stay.
The prayer with each candle is that none of those guys get hurt in 2009.
Or none of them flunks a class or worse.
I don't want to think about what's going to happen if all four go down.
There doesn't seem to be a backup plan should that happen, as it did with the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2008. They prevailed because they had five quarterbacks who could step in and play and won the Big East title.
Forget about the eschewed kneel down in the Navy game or the fourth and 1 from his own 34 in the UConn game, going with three scholarship quarterbacks in 2009 might be Al Golden's biggest gamble.
I thought that was a low number, so I spent the last two days printing out the rosters of the 119 Division IA (I refuse to call it the Football Championship Division or whatever they are calling it these days) teams and Temple had three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in 2008, which represented the lowest total of any of the 119 teams.
Troy and New Mexico State had four.
Over 90 percent of the other schools had five.
Ugh.
I don't feel comfortable about it, but Al Golden apparently does. Right now, there are no designated emergency quarterbacks in spring ball, although maybe, in a pinch, sophomore-to-be defensive back Kevin Kroboth can take a snap or two. He was the quarterback of an 0-11 Nazareth team his senior year in high school.
There's is quality, if not quantity. Maybe not enough quality and quantity, but quality nonetheless.
There's a good mix of experience (Vaughn Charlton, Chester Stewart) with raw talent (Coyer).
Can Coyer start as a true freshman?
Why not?
I have no doubt that Golden is going to throw three into one mix, stir the pot, and see what rises to the top.
That's the way it should be.
It shouldn't be decided in the media or by some Joe Schmoe's opinion or by a highlight reel.
Get them out on the field and whoever moves the ball and the chains bests gets the job against Villanova.
That's the American way, after all.
Meanwhile, I'll keep going back to the church and make sure those candles stay lit.
Nine days into the coach search
Bicknell is probably the highest profile coach mentioned in the UMass coaching search. Recruits won't know him, of course, but their coaches will.
UPDATE: UMass will interview Bicknell this weekend. Matty Vautour also reports on some other coaches not mentioned before.
UPDATE II: Matty Vautour mentions that McCutcheon has met with or spoken with a number of coaches recently. I've published links for Jack Bicknell, Jr, Mark D'Onofrio, Neal Brown, Tom Gilmore, Kevin Morris and Tom Masaella (scroll down). New to the mix are:
- Geroge Barlow, DC James Madison
- Frank Hickson, RB Coach Liberty
Would we be interested in Iowa QB Jake Christensen? He's transferring.
Former Louisville QB Matt Simms is also available .

Eight Days into the new coach search 01/16/09
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Boston Herald says the coaching search has been narrowed to three candidates.
Relevant quote "The committee is reportedly enamored with a third unnamed candidate."
UPDATE: Matty Vautour disagrees with the Herald. He believes that there are still six names on the UMass' hot sheet--- and one of them is not Boston College's OC Steve Logan, who resigned today. He predicts a hire by the end of next week.

The American Football Coaches Association has called for a early signing day for football recruits.

Six Days into the the search for a new coach 01/14/09
Thomas reports the search has narrowed to mostly Northeast coaches. Two coaches I have not blogged about are reported to be on the short list.
- Bill McGovern, Boston College linebackers coach. McGovern knows UMass football well as he has had two stints as a UMass assistant coach. He was DB coach from 87-90 and Defensive Coordinator from 92-93. He has good recruiting connections in talent rich New Jersey.
- Mark D'Onofrio, Assistant Head Coach/ Defensive Coordinator Temple. The Owls led the MAC in five defensive categories. He has coached at Rutgers and UVA. Temple had its most wins (five) since 1990 last year and crushed Army 35-7. He's from New Jersey. He's regarded as an up and coming coach.
Meanwhile, Maine's Jack Cosgrive denies being contacted about the UMass Head Coaching job.
In other Black Bear news, Maine picked up a QB from the disbanded Iona College football team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More information from Matty Vautour, who says any interviews with John McCutcheon, the UMass AD will probably take place in Washington DC.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This article from the Boston Globe states that Bill McGovern (mention earlier in this blog post) may be in line to be elevated to DC for the Eagles.

Owls get a Tim Tebow-clone in Chris Coyer
Garrett Barnas brings his artistry to the canvas and the football field.
By Mike Gibson
I have a dilemma.
Everytime I watch news on the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, Channel 6, I'm torn.
Erin O'Hearn comes on and I'm in love with her.
Then the weather comes on and I'm in love with Cecily Tynan.
Erin or Cecily.
Cecily or Erin.
I love both.
There are other women on Channel 6 I like but I don't love. Sarah Bloomquist I really like. Karen Rogers, I really, really like. (Not so much Nora Muchanic. Sorry, Nora.)
I love Erin and Cecily.
I can't decide who I love more.
So I've decided I want both.
I must be a greedy person in other areas of my life because, strictly in a platonic sense here, that's the way I feel about Temple's already here and incoming quarterbacks.
I like Vaughn Charlton and Chester Stewart.
I love (remember, we're talking football-sense here) Chris Coyer and Garrett Barnas.
Why?
Simply, because they both bring me the multi-dimensional ability I've become used to in a Temple quarterback (i.e., Adam DiMichele for the past three years).
Garrett Barnas is an artist both on and off the football field and I sincerely hope and pray he's in Temple's framed 2009 picture.
As a quarterback, he led one Class AAA team, Bureau Valley (Ill.) to an Illinois state title and an unbeaten season. Then he merely won a JUCO national title with Harper College.
Behind the canvas, Barnas is quite a talented artist, too.
He's a 3.4 GPA student who would fit right in at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and has inquired about playing football at Temple.
Welcome newest Owl, Chris Coyer
Favorite Pro Team: Vikings.
Appetite: Ravenous (altough he's not a Ravens' fan).
Food tasting: Loves Philly cheesesteaks. While in North Philadelphia a couple of years ago for his sisters' AAU basketball game, he ate two cheesesteaks with a large meatball sub in a two-hour period. His favorite food? Sushi.
Favorite local (Va.) hangout: Vienna Inn (best known for Chilli Dogs).
Family tie to Temple: Great-great uncle Harry Cochran was Dean of the Business School at Temple in the 1940s.
Academic quirk: Can solve algebra, calculus, trigonometry, chemistry, and physics equations in his head and come up with correct answers and he doesn't know how or why.
Athletics: Two-year, two-sport captain (football and basketball) and the first male athlete to achieve that honor in the 40-year history of Oakton High. MVP in both sports.
Strength: Bench press 345 pounds, 20 pounds greater than Tim Tebow at the same age.
Athlete D.C./Va. press most compares him to: Tim Tebow.
Family: Twin sisters, Caroline and Katherine, only freshmen, have already received over 100 recruitment letters.
Favorite color: Red
Color of his Ford Lightning Pickup Truck: Cherry
This morning, coach Ed Foley, in charge of his recruitment, is going over a Garrett Barnas Highlight Reel (with the emphasis on capital H and R) that arrived via UPS.
I'd like nothing more than Temple to have three quarterbacks this spring, but to do that, coach Foley will have to fax a LOI (that's letter-of-intent) to Walnut, Ill. and Barnas will have to get his stuff together in order to get to Philadelphia by Tuesday, the day the spring semester starts at Temple.
Tall order?
Yes.
Impossible?
No.
Barnas is the spitting image, in the football and person sense, of Adam DiMichele.
Both 6-1, 205, both fast (Barnas 4.45, DiMichele 4.6), both with the ability to break down a defense and make plays with their feet and head. Both are great leaders and All-American-type kids.
So is Chris Coyer. Ohio State would have likely ... and that's VERY likely ... tendered a scholarship offer to Chris Coyer this weekend. Chris, though, had his heart set on Temple because of a solid relationship he forged with the Temple coaches over the past few months, particularly coach Rhule and coach Gilbride. So he committed to Al Golden at 10:08 p.m. last night.
With the news that All-American quarterback Taj Boyd is now probably headed to Oregon, Coyer was OSU's No. 1 fallback plan.
He was never a fallback plan at Temple where he will now make a big name for himself.
While Garrett will remind you of DiMichele, Chris will remind you of Tim Tebow. I would be remiss if I didn't add Mark Giubilato of St. Joseph's Prep. Picture a Vaughn Charlton who can run more like Adam DiMichele and that's Giubilato.
The thing I liked most about Adam and like most about Garrett (and Chris and Mark) is that they all have a feel for the rush and the sixth sense of knowing when to get out of there and do something positive with the football. All can get me a first down on a regular basis should the protection break down.
I can't say that for classic pocket passers like Vaughn and Chester. Vaughn or Chester will get me that first down once in a while. Garrett, Mark and Chris will get me that first down most of the time and keep those chains moving. All can throw the ball.
It doesn't take an Albert Einstein to figure out that if you have five guys who can throw and three of them can run, you double your chances to move the sticks with the guys who can run. Evidently it does take an Albert Einstein to figure out that if you take a knee and punt in the Navy game, your chances of winning increase by a factor of 10 over handing the ball off. But that's another story for another day.
It's quarterbacks like Garrett, Mark and Chris, though, who will strike fear into opposing defenses by keeping them on their heels.
It's no coincidence that as full-time starters this season one was 13-0 and the other 11-1.
The two are used to big-time success and they will expect no less at Temple.
I can't decide and since I can have both I will, thank you.
I wish I could say the same for Erin and Cecily.
Tuesday Afternoon and happy to be home 01/13/09
McCutcheon said despite the state of the economy, UMass is not decreasing its commitment to the football program. He said the new coach is inheriting a program he expects to remain a contender for conference and national titles in the Football Championship Subdivision.
"We've been successful at the national level. It's part of what our goals are for the athletic program here," McCutcheon said. "We're giving the kids a good experience and we're doing it in the right way.
"The economy will create challenges no doubt, but we will work through those as a department and cross the bridges as we come to them," he added. "We intend to stay committed to football."
The Blog thinks this is very good news indeed. Unless a UMass fan is totally out of touch, it would be hard to miss the current recession. Although I have not mentioned it, I was expecting some negative repercussions for UMass football. If all that happens is FBS football is put on the back burner, I think we can count ourselves lucky. It could be much, much worse.
This means:
- Brown did not leave because of cuts in resources.
- We could expect a coaching hire with the intent to keep UMass in the top of the Division
- 2009 recruits should find UMass a desirable place to play.
Meanwhile, Boston college still has its thumb up its butt. Matty infers that UMass would be strongly interested in either of the two Boston College coaches Frank Spaziani or Jack Bicknell, Jr. If either one of them became the next UMass Head Coach, he might bring some recruits and assistant coaches with him.
More on the BC drama from the Boston Globe. The article mentions another coach I think would be a great get for UMass , Florida Offensive Coordinator Steve Addazio.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Richmond Spiders have announced their 2009 schedule. That adds another date to UMass' known 2009 schedule:
- 09/05 @ Kansas State
- 09/12 @ Albany
- 10/10 @ Delaware
- 10/24 @ Richmond
UPDATE: Matty Vautour reports BC announced Spaz in their man.
UPDATE II: More tea leaves from the athletic dept.
UPDATE III: UMass announces the search committee for UMass football Head Coach.
UPDATE: IV: Boston college makes it official, the Eagles hire Spaziani here .

Sunday News 01/11/09
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Former UMass Coach Ted Roof has been appointed defensive coordinator at Auburn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought we were considering playing Michigan in 2010? This article says Maine may play at the Big House.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How about Florida assistant coach Steve Addazio as a possibility for UMass Head Coach? See this article from the Boston Globe. Key Quote from the article"
Addazio, 49, has New England ties, playing at Western Connecticut State from 1978-81. After a stint as a high school coach in Connecticut, he began a coaching odyssey which included stops at Syracuse, Notre Dame, Indiana and Florida, where he has been since 2005. When Dan Mullen, Florida's offensive coordinator, accepted the head job at Mississippi State, Gator Coach Urban Meyer elevated Addazio to offensive coordinator.
But Addazio's goal is to become a head coach. In the past few months, he has interviewed for openings at Yale and Syracuse. He is regarded as an excellent recruiter, which BC officials regard as a key issue, although the overwhelming sentiment is to bring in someone with BC ties, which would again favor Spaziani."
If he was interested in being Head Coach at Yale, he could do even more at UMass.

Va. newspaper reports TU leads for Ohio State QB target
By Mike Gibson
It was an aside near the end of Doug Doughty's excellent recruiting report in the Roanoke (Va.) Times.
"No. 40, Chris Coyer, Oakton _ Temple leads"
That's it.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
But it told a lot.
Dougthy is a boyhood friend of Chris Coyer.
Not the kid, the dad.
So what Doughty writes carries an awful lot of weight.
What has muddied the waters is that Ohio State has gotten involved of late.
Ohio State is waiting for another QB target, Taj Boyd, an All-American who played in the Army Bowl in San Antonio. If Boyd falls from the wayside, it will offer a full ride to Coyer.
If Coyer gets the full ride from Ohio State, our sources say, there's a good (maybe very good) chance that Chris will tell Ohio State "thanks, but no thanks" and pick Temple instead.
The reason?
Temple was on Chris from the beginning and believed in him from the beginning.
Ohio State cannot say that.
Heck, if Temple runs the table next year, beats a Big 10 champion in Penn State and Navy and others and goes 13-0, the Owls will be playing for the national championship. Hey, it's a longshot but we can dream, can't we?
OK, we're dreaming big dreams here but the Owls were a Hail Mary away from being 6-6 (Buffalo), a kneel down away from being 7-5 (Navy), a 4th and 1 away from being 8-4 (UConn), two missed field goals away from being 9-3 (Kent State) and maybe a burned redshirt of a QB away from being 11-1 (Central Michigan, Western Michigan).
A little tweak there, a kneel down here, a well-timed blitz over there, better emergency QB planning up there and it's not inconceivable that the Owls could have been 10-2 (or, gasp, 11-1) in 2008.
They have now solved the kicking problem, bringing in North Penn's Brandon McManus. They've solved the 4th and 1 problem, recruiting a "real" fullback, and, whether or not you like returning quarterbacks Chester Stewart and Vaughn Charlton, having just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster is a problem that needs to be addressed with a high-quality newcomer who is ready to play.
Really, the only game the Owls were out of was Penn State and that's because their all-world quarterback, Adam DiMichele, went down on the third offensive play of the day.
Temple has a unique schedule in the MAC because it regularly plays Penn State. The ceiling is higher for a Temple than, say, Ball State because the Owls schedule up more regularly in their out-of-conference games. Should the Owls break through and upset Nittany Lions (just once, God, please), it's Katie Bar the Door for how far this program can go.
It's happened before at places like Rutgers, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Boise State, Ball State and Boston College.
Why not Temple?
Even Utah didn't have a Penn State or a UConn on its schedule this year.
A player like Coyer could be, to Temple, what Doug Flutie was to Boston College in the 1980s. A knock-the-door-down kind of player.
And all he needs to do is play within himself, just be himself and no one else.
With the weapons he has to throw and hand off to, Coyer could help turn the Lincoln Financial Field scoreboard into an adding machine.
Think about it. Marquise Liverpool was a Rivals Superprep All-American ranked in the top 25 (23) in the nation as a five-star wide receiver coming out of Don Bosco (N.J.) High. Vaughn Carraway was rated the No. 1 receiver in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Football News last year and rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com. Jason Harper, a converted running back, was the Daily Record Player of the Year as a senior in 2004. Steve Maneri is a 6-7 tight end who is a tempting target over middle.
Running back Kee-ayre Griffin of St. Peter's Prep was first-team all-state in New Jersey and ranked the No. 19 prospect overall in that populous state.
That's just the tip of the iceberg of talent that will greet Coyer when he arrives at Temple. Big-time achievers.
What those guys were in New Jersey, Coyer is in Virginia.
Coyer, a threat to throw AND run, is just the kind of guy to keep defenses honest. They can't pin their ears back and just rush him because he's capable of taking off for a 60-yard touchdown run at any time. When he throws, they can't cover everyone. When he pumps, they'll have to respect the run and cheat up. Then he can dump off a jump pass to Maneri, Tim Tebow-like, at the last minute or a shovel pass to Griffin or maybe a bubble screen to Carraway or Harper.
It should be fun to watch.
Coyer has built up excellent relationships with coach Rhule and coach Gilbride, who are in charge of his recruitment.
There's a lot of comfort in that for both the kid and the school he selects.
If Coyer picks Temple after getting an Ohio State offer, then it will be the second year in a row that Temple nabbed a kid who got a solid "offer" and not just interest from a perennial Big 10 power.
Last year, Carraway, picked Temple after declining a summer offer from Michigan prior to his senior year.
Coyer's No. 1 target against Villanova on opening day could be Carraway, if both earn starting spots. The 40,000-plus Temple fans in the stands that Thursday night could be loving every minute of the unveiling of that dynamic duo.
Villanova will never know what hit it.
Matty Vautour on our next coach
Key quote from the article: "McCutcheon said he was contacted by interested candidates within 90 minutes of Brown's departure being announced on Friday."
- Several UMass players, including Liam Coen and Kyle Harrington endorsed UMass Offensive Coordinator Kevin Morris.
- Former UMass assistant coach and now head coach at Fordham, Tom Masella. He was not happy last time when Brown was chosen. Masella felt he should have been given a longer look. Don't know if he's over that.
- Dave Cosgrove, Maine. Cosgrove recently interviewed for the Rhode Island and Towson jobs, so he seems to be looking to leave the Black Bears.
- Dick Biddle, Colgate
- Tom Gilmore, Holy Cross
- Phis Estes, Brown. Estes was an assistant coach with Mark Whipple and has done an excellent job with Brown.
- Matt Griffin, Murray State, a Turners Falls native who knows the Western Mass scene well.
- Jack Bicknell, Jr, Former head coach at Louisiana Tech could be considered.
- Neal Brown, Troy State. He's a former UMass player who's been a fast riser in college coaching.
- Frank Spaziani, Boston College if he's interested in FCS football
- Ben Albert, Associate head Coach at Delaware. Former UMass star DT. (this one is from me)
In the opinion of the UMass Football Blog, of the coaches listed, Tom Masella (talked with him back when he was at UMass), Tom Gilmore, Phil Estes, Neal Brown and the two Boston College coaches, would be on the Blog's final list.
The two BC coaches, if interested, would be looking to leave in three years or so. But I'd rather have dynamic fast riser than a mediocre long termer.
In this article, Matty Vautour states that Brown's buy-out was only $25,000. If UMass gets a high profile guy, they should think of increasing that provision.

Thank you Coach Brown
It is the nature of college football that change happens. Coach Brown deserves a chance to coach at the highest level he can achieve. ACC offenses will learn to fear the Turtle.
UMass fans should wish him well.
A new era approaches for UMass football. It is an attractive job in FCS/I-AA. We need to sign another ambitious coach who will cope with any short term difficulties and and take UMass football forward.
Everybody should keep the faith and GO UMass!
