MANILA, Philippines - After a third place finish in the recently concluded United Football League, the season of Loyola Meralco Sparks FC is not yet over as they fly to Singapore for the quarterfinals of the RHB Singapore Cup.
Loyola Meralco is the Philippines' representative in the 15-year-old tournament that gathers Singapore's professional clubs from the S. League, and pits them against invited foreign teams.
Loyola Meralco were put to the test by S.League side Geylang United in the preliminary round of the competition, relying on goals from Mark Hartmann and Park Min Ho to defeat the Eagles 2-1 after extra time despite the squad already hampered by fatigue.
With the win against Geylang, they will be up against Myanmar side Kanbawza FC for the quarterfinals, which they will have to play twice.
Tough team
Kanbawza is the second remaining foreign club in the competition after Laos' Yotha FC, Cambodia's Phnom Penh Crown and Malaysia's Harimau Muda B were eliminated in the preliminary round. Kanbawza cruised through the preliminary round of the competition, defeating Woodlands Wellington FC 2-1 with goals from Soe Min Oo and Tercio Nunes.
It will be another challenge for Loyola Meralco as they will count on national team stalwarts Phil and James Younghusband to lead the charge against the Myanmar side, and hopefully regain some pride after faltering late in the UFL season with a loss against rivals Philippine Air Force Phoenix and a draw against Nomads Auction Manila that led to their third place finish behind winners Global FC and runner-up Kaya FC.
The match between Loyola Meralco and Kanbawza will be on July 5 and July 8, both matches will start at 7:45pm and will be held at the Jalan Besar Stadium. - Rappler.com
