Vietnam to play friendly matches ahead of AFF Cup

Nhan Dan Online The Vietnam national mens football team will play a total of seven international friendly matches from September 11 to November 3, in preparation for the upcoming 2012 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.

The matches will begin with a good challenge as Vietnam will face defiant champions Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on September 11 before taking on 2010 runners-up Indonesia in another friendly match in Jakarta four days later.

After playing the second-leg game against Indonesia at My Dinh National Stadium on September 22, the national team will clash with the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Turkmenistan and U-22 Iran in the 2012 Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Cup from October 24 to 28.

Vietnam will wrap up its pre-AFF series of friendly matches with a second-leg battle against Malaysia on home field on November 3 before flying to Bangkok, Thailand on November 20 to attend the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012.

The 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup is slated to take place from November 24 to December 22 in Thailand and Malaysia.

Matching Suzuki Cup feat possible, says Weiss

By

GERMAN coach Michael Weiss yesterday tempered expectations on the Philippines campaign in the AFF Suzuki Cup in November, saying the Azkals chances will depend on how tough they will prepare for the tournament.
Matching the semifinal appearance of 2010 is not far-fetched so long as the Azkals are committed to the intensive buildup, he stressed.
If preparations go well and much better just like the preparations to the Challenge Cup, we will have a very good chance to go to the semifinals, said Weiss in an e-mail to the Inquirer.
The German mentor is expected to return to Manila from Germany next week to begin the crucial stretch of their preparations for the tournament, which he anticipates to be much difficult than the AFC Challenge Cup, where the Azkals finished third.
Weiss has tipped host Thailand to come out on top of the Philippines group that also includes Vietnam and the winner of the qualifying event in October in Yangon, Myanmar.
The draw is good, similar to the Challenge Cup said Weiss, whose Azkals wound up second to North Korea in the group stage of the Challenge Cup where they beat former champions India and Tajikistan.
Most likely, Thailand has the best chances with the home advantage to win the group, said Weiss. We will be taken more seriously and therefore have to prepare for a more physical approach from our opponents.
The next months will be highly demanding for our players from the physical and mental point of view.

Vietnam boss Phan Thanh Hung happy to avoid 'group of death'

Vietnam coach Phan Thanh Hung has revealed his relief at avoiding the "group of death" following the draw for the 2012 AFF Cup on Wednesday.

The 2008 AFF Cup winners were pooled in Group A alongside hosts Thailand, previous semi-finalists Philippines and the winner of qualifying round.

Its a relief when Vietnam was not placed in Group B, which is group of death in my view. However, we must not be complacent, Hung said.

Hung, who has been in charge of Vietnam national team since June, rated hosts Thailand as the group favourites and insisted Philippines are a big threat.

Despite underperforming in recent years, Thailand are always a strong team with many quality players. Its no doubt they are favourite to win the group on their home soil, he said.

Philippines has called up many foreign-born players recently. Their national team has turned into a completely different one. Therefore, we must be careful."

He added: In coming time, we are going to keep close watch on their moves such as which players are called up, where they are from and their strength and weakness.

In preparation for the AFF Cup, Vietnam have lined up two friendlies against Indonesia in September. A  friendly tournament involving Turkmenistan, DPR Korea, Iran's Olympic team and hosts Vietnam has also been scheduled in October.

Limpag: Not favorites, but were Suzuki Cup underdogs

By Mike T. Limpag
Fair Play
Friday, July 13, 2012
SO well be taking on Vietnam again in the Suzuki Cup but before going to Thailand for Southeast Asias marquee tournament, the Philippines will be on a worldwide preparation.
A camp and a series of friendlies in the US in August, another tournament in India, friendlies in September, a tournament in October in Bacolod, a camp in November and a friendly in Cebu. And of course, theres the UFL, too.

And my question is not whether its enough, but whether its too much. Will the schedule, too, put the PFF and the UFL on a collision course again?
I hope its a big no on both questions.
Last time I checked, the India tournament wasnt part of the picture, but you really cant blame the PFF for accepting a tournament invitation in India. Any chance you have to face teams like Jordan (No. 84 in the world and eighth in Asia) and Syria (132, 18), which once routed us, 12-0, and, 5-1, in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers, you grab it.
When I read about Coach Michael Weisss plan of having 20 matches for the team before the Suzuki Cup, I thought he was dreaming, but when you consider all the tournaments and friendlies the team has, I guess hell get his wish.
Back in 2010, the team had a camp in Leyte, a very brief sojourn in Cebu for publicity that fans ignored, and the Long Teng Camp, now theyre going to the US, India and Dubai.
I think some will be concerned about player injuries, and these are valid concerns. I just hope though that with a 20-game schedule, the bench warmers can get to see action. Coach Weiss has repeatedly said theres a vast difference between the experience of the Europe-based Azkals and the locals, and its true.
But its true, too, that guys who spent 90 minutes admiring the view from the best seat in the house wont get a minute of the experience that is being talked about.
The Azkals are scheduled to face No. 177-ranked US Virgin Islands and India, who we already beat, and though these matches will affect our Fifa rankings, I see no need to field our best lineup against them and I happen to believe giving the locals experience is more important than the ranking points that we could lose (but, thats just me). Besides, we can always gain back the points in the Long Teng Cup, the friendlies at home, and of course, the Suzuki Cup.
This Suzuki Cup campaign will be telling. Just as we are eager to prove the win against Vietnam was no fluke (which, I think, was already proven by subsequent Azkals matches), I think Vietnam is more than eager to prove that the loss to the Philippines was just a blip.
The last time we played in the Suzuki Cup in Thailand, we got two disasters before the team salvaged its pride and spoiled Myanmars semifinal dream with a 0-0 draw. We lost to Malaysia, 4-0, in the opening match and to Thailand, 4-0. Against Malaysia, we lost Aly Borromeo to an injury minutes into the game and a Malaysian scored on a bicycle kick that ended up on CNNs Play of the Day.
Aside from Thailand and Vietnam, we are going to face the top qualifier, which could be Myanmar, and though some say its a bad thing since we havent beaten Myanmar, I say its a good thing because ever since conceding an injury time goal in 2004, we havent conceded any to Myanmar in 2007 and 2010, and weve changed a lot, since.
Palami has said that were one of the favorites in the tournament and I dont like that. Do you remember what happened that last time we got tagged as one of the favorites in a Southeast Asian football tourney?
I like to think that, despite all the changes, we are still the underdogs and I hope we start acting and preparing like one. You do remember of course that last time, as the underdogs, we faced two former champions in a group stage?

WE ARE COMING IN AS FAVOURITES: PALAMI

MANILA (12 July 2012) The draw has been made. And with still months to go to the big event in November, the gauntlet has already been thrown as Dan Palami, the team manager of the Philippines national team, has stated that they are coming in as favourites and not as a surprise package.

The Philippines created a stir at the last edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup when they dumped defending champions Vietnam 2-0 in Hanoi in the group stage. That victory ensured their passage into the next round where they faced Indonesia in the semi-finals.

But despite not being able to make the cut for the final, the performance of the Philippines national side has garnered them enough credit to ensure that they gained an automatic qualification into the main draw this time round.
Were not coming in as a surprise team anymore. Were coming in as one of the favourites, said Palami after the draw was announced yesterday.

The Philippines are in Group A of the tournament this year against hosts Thailand, Vietnam and the winning team from the qualifiers.

In Group B are hosts Malaysia where they will be up against Indonesia, Singapore and the runners-up team from the qualifying round.

Azkals in Group A of Suzuki Cup

MANILA, Philippines The road back to the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup will have to go through regional powerhouse Thailand, arch-nemesis Vietnam and the winner of the Qualifying Stage.

Owing to their semifinals finish in the last Suzuki Cup, the Azkals, this time, were seeded in the Group Stage and were drawn third in Group A.
Comprising the other Group will be defending champion Malaysia, runner-up Indonesia, Singapore and the runner-up in the Qualifying Stage.

Were not coming in as a surprise team anymore. Were coming in as one of the favourites, Azkals team manager Dan Palami said in the livestreaming of the draw in the Azkals Sports Bar in The Fort Strip today.
In 2010, the Azkals finished second to Laos in the Qualifying Stage, beating Timor Leste and drawing with Cambodia and the group winner.

The Azkals went on to shock Vietnam in a 2-nil victory put the Philippines in the world football map even hogging the headline of the FIFA website. Their rapid rise was cut short when they lost to Indonesia in the semifinals after giving away the hosting rights to a home match due to lack of world-class football facilities.
Now, Vietnam will have another crack at the Azkals in the Group Stage, where the top two teams in each group will advance in the crossover home-and-away leg in the semis. But the biggest obstacle in their group would be Thailand, which appeared in five of the last eight Suzuki Cup Finals and won three times in the process.
The Azkals will play in Thailand, which will co-host the Group Stage with defending champion Malaysia, on Nov. 24-Dec. 1 this year to be shown live on AKTV on IBC.

AFF SUZUKI CUP: Millions Of Fans Will Follow Draw Ceremony

BANGKOK (10 July 2012) Millions of football fans throughout the region will be tuning in on the AFF Suzuki Cup draw which takes place here tomorrow. Fans are undoubtedly excited over how the draw will favour their own national teams for this years edition of the regions most prestigious football tournament.

Two years ago, Malaysia rose to the occasion and defeated Indonesia for the title. It was the first time Malaysia lifted the trophy since the AFF-organized tournament was inaugurated in 1996.

Past results however will count for nothing as the national teams of Southeast Asia prepare for this years event which has all the hallmarks of being one of the most competitive ever. Winning the AFF Suzuki Cup has almost become an obsession and all teams will be gunning for nothing less than victory.
The first step towards going for the prized piece of silverware begins with the draw tomorrow.

Malaysia and Thailand, as the group stage hosts, will obviously be separated. During the draw, the names of the eight finalists will be divided into 4 pots of 2 nations each based on the team rankings.

The first pot will contain the names of Malaysia and Thailand while the second pot will have the teams of Vietnam and Indonesia in it. Pot 3 will have Singapore and the Philippines while the fourth pot will be for the two qualifiers.

The qualifying competition will be held in Myanmar this October where the top two winners will earn their place in the final rounds. Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Timor Leste and Brunei will all be trying to book their places in the finals.

Fired-up booters eye Suzuki Cup Final 4

By Olmin Leyba

With expectations running higher now as a result of their historic bronze medal feat in the last AFC Challenge Cup, the Philippine Azkals will make sure they are fully equipped and thoroughly prepared when they plunge into action in the AFF Suzuki Cup later in the year.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami said the target is to once more reach the semifinals of the premier football competition among ASEAN nations, but stressed they couldnt afford a crammed buildup like the one they had prior to the Challenge Cup.

We know if we have several months to prepare, so do the other countries, which means we have to be really focused (on the preparations), Palami said during yesterdays PSA forum at Shakeys UN Avenue.

The Azkals, who placed third in the Nepal Challenge Cup despite not-so-ideal preparations, will get back on twice-a-week training by April 17 to jumpstart training for the Suzuki Cup. The meet is set in Thailand and Malaysia in November.

A 10-day camp in either Tagaytay or Cebu will be held late May to get them ready for three international friendlies set in June. The Philippine Football Federation has invited Indonesia for a June 5 fixture at Rizal Memorial, Vietnam and Thailand for a June 8 outing at the Panaad pitch in Bacolod, and China for a June 12 Independence Cup game at Rizal. So far, only China has confirmed but will supposedly send its Olympic team.

Were also scheduling two foreign camps, one in the Gulf and the other one, were still determining where, likely in Europe, sometime August. And the Long Teng Cup (in Chinese Taipei) in October will also be part of our preparations, said Palami.

The milestone finish in the Nepal Challenge Cup raised the bar of expectations further, admitted the Azkals boss.

Even before we left, we already set the bar high by saying our target was to be in the semis of the Challenge Cup and of course everybody wanted to believe us but really the expectations were not so high.

But this time, I think we have to back up our words with really strong preparations and I think everybody in the team and all stakeholders know whats at stake and what will put us to where we want to be, he said.

Palami said they are taking a two-pronged approach to sustain the Azkals momentum.
