Galaxy glows; Beckham and Co. dazzle fans
MANILA, Philippines - It was a moonless and starless Saturday night but it was all dazzling and bright at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadim as the Los Angeles Galaxy battled the Philippine Azkals.
The final scoreline was Galaxy: 6, Azkals: 1. But that hardly mattered to some 9,000 spectators as they got to see English superstar David Beckham dazzle with nifty moves for a good 75 minutes.
He knocked down a volley at the 20th minute, opening up scoring. Crowd was momentarily quiet but immediately burst into loud cheers.
He displayed his dribbling and passing skills as the Galaxy showed Azkals how to set it from the midfield.
He wiggled free from diminutive but speedy Chieffy Caligdong to launch a cross from the right that was made good by Adam Cristman at the 62nd, stretching the lead to 4-1 for the Galaxy.
He had a few trips on the corner and a couple of free kicks, never consummated but nevertheless drawing shrieks each time.
The 36-year-old Beckham was sent back to bench at the 75th, his immediate move was take off his long-sleeved white Herbalife Galaxy jersey and present it to boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao at the VIP section. Beside Pacman, Jinkee was giggling like a teenage girl.
�I was enjoying myself out there. It�s a great trip out here,� said Beckham.
The global icon himself admitted getting starstruck with the presence of Pacquiao, who arrived to cheers halfway through the first 45 minutes.
�I couldn�t wait to get off the field. I am a huge fan because he�s a talented man, such a good person. I saw him walk in I wanted to meet him, take a picture with him, it�s exciting,� Becks mused.
Cristman, who came in as sub, led scoring with two goals (62nd and 87th). Posting one goal each like Beckham were Irish star Robbie Keane, whose header practically swayed the game to the Galaxy�s favor two minutes into the second half, and Gregg Berhalter who scored on a penalty on the 81st for the final score.
Phil Younghusband, who had the privilege of getting an autographed jersey from his idol Beckham in the post match press conference, delivered the lone goal for Phl, a left foot shot that cut LA�s lead to 2-1 at the 41st.
Coaches of the opposing sides agreed that the Azkals played a solid first 45 minutes but simply disintegrated in the last against a superior, more experienced opponent.

LA Galaxy triumphs!

Manila, Philippines � The LA Galaxy led by star David Beckham, gave the Philippine Azkals a sample of that it means to be one of the best professional football clubs in North America with a 6-1 beating in the scheduled Dream Cup matchup held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Beckham took the honors of making the first goal at the 20 minute mark and Mike Magee followed this up with another at the 38th minute of the first half.
Phil Younghusband however made the Azkals lone goal at the 39th minute to make it 2-1 by halftime.
However, everything changed in the second half as the Galaxy took charge and overwhelmed the tired boys of coach Hans Michael Weiss.
The other goals for the Galaxy came courtesy from Robbie Keanne, Adam Cristman and the retiring Gregg Berhalter.
Coach Weiss was however far from impressed on the showing of his boys. While the team did play sans stars such as Neil Etheridge, Stephan Shrock, Paul Mulders and Aly Borromeo, he believed that the team could have done better.
�I was extremely happy in the first half but extremely unhappy with the second half because we build up something and then we destroy it in a short period of time. Then we get a result like this which doesn�t reflect out fantastic performance in the first half� said Weiss.
On the absence of the Azkal�s key players, Weiss added: �It was a situation we knew before and it is like that. I am not crying about the ones not there and I will always support the ones who are here. But they have to follow more the strategy and the way we want to play and not think all of a sudden they have to play their own way.
The fairly sized crowd who came to watch the game included the likes of celebrities like Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao (who was the beneficiary of Beckham's playing uniform in the second half), Dawn Zulueta, Angel Locsin and Mylene Dizon.

Azkals� dream match with Galaxy: Filipinos face their idols

MANILA, Philippines � The Philippines Azkals, a team that hardly merited a second look even from its Southeast Asian rivals a year ago, face the newly crowned Major League Soccer champion Los Angeles Galaxy in an exhibition match that underlines the rapid rise of the sport in this basketball-crazy nation.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Stadium with the Azkals, who will wear their blue kits, finding themselves pitted against their idols led by the hugely popular David Beckham�a thought most of them hardly even imagined last year.
�Last year, we were at a hotel in Hanoi during the Suzuki Cup and this match was something we just couldn�t imagine happening,� said skipper Aly Borromeo. �It speaks a lot of the growth of football in the Philippines.�
The Azkals hope to rise to the challenge against the Galaxy as they gear up for tougher matches ahead, particularly in the AFC Challenge Cup in March.
�We will give them a good fight,� declared Chieffy Caligdong at the prematch press conference Thursday night. �We will show them that Filipinos can play football.�
Much as they will be overwhelmed playing against their idols, Azkals striker Phil Younghusband said they are taking the game seriously.
�We would want to be as professional as possible during the game,� said Younghusband. �We can be fans after the game.�
The Azkals can�t expect any favors from the Galaxy themselves as coach Bruce Arena has promised to field his strongest 11 for the match.
Beckham contractually obliged
The 36-year-old Beckham, a former captain of England who has won titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid, is contractually obliged to play at least 45 minutes in the match, said promoter Jinx Macabenta.
�We know we represent the MLS and the LA Galaxy and we promise it�s going to be competitive,� said Arena, who handled the United States national team for eight years until after the 2006 World Cup.
Arena remains concerned of the fatigue factor for the Galaxy, after getting just a 10-day rest following their conquest in the MLS Cup.
While the Galaxy are coming off a 1-0 victory over an Indonesian selection team Wednesday night in Jakarta, the Azkals have not played a game together since Oct. 11, when they beat Nepal, 4-0, in an international friendly at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
�We had a difficult game against Indonesia and it�s not going to be any different here,� Arena said.
Before they play the Azkals, the Galaxy will still visit Casa Herbalife, the charitable institution run by their sponsor Herbalife in Alabang.
Key players missing
The Azkals will be without some of the key players who have sustained the inroads they made over the past year in Stephan Schrock, Jerry Lucena, Dennis Cagara, Paul Mulders and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who are all tied up with their clubs in Europe.
Armyman Eduard Sacapa�o will get the rare opportunity of facing the Galaxy on goal for the Azkals, who welcomed back Chris Greatwich in the lineup.
The 28-year-old Greatwich scored two goals in the historic run to the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup�the tournament that thrust the Azkals into stardom.
Manny Ott and Jason de Jong are also in the squad, although Azkals coach Michael Weiss has again expressed concern over the condition of his players who are coming from long trips from different parts of Europe.
Whatever the outcome, Borromeo believes the Azkals have already achieved something with the Galaxy coming over.
�These are the players we look up to,� said Borromeo. �Just to watch these guys (Galaxy) play is already a big moment for us.�

Low turnout seen in Azkals-LA Galaxy friendly match

MANILA -- Tickets to matches of Philippine national football team Azkals used to sell like hotcakes, but that is not the case for Saturday�s friendly match against David Beckham-led Los Angeles Galaxy.
Ticket prices range from P2,060 to P15,965, even as prices for the previous international matches of the Azkals, including the World Cup qualifiers last July, only ranged from P200 to P3,000.
The organizers have been prompted to slash ticket prices by as much as 35 percent early this week to drum up revenue and fill the 13,000-seater Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Despite the price cut, Ticketworld, the official distributor, on its website said there is still a "good" availability of game passes.
But a source who requested anonymity said at least P10 million worth of tickets have not been sold yet as of Wednesday.
Jinx Macabenta, president of event promoter Fuelcels Inc., while he declined to provide figures, said the past few days have been a struggle in terms of pushing fans to watch the game.
�It�s been an uphill climb but when we brought down the prices, there has been a spike in ticket sales since Monday. Hopefully, we can sell 80 percent of the tickets by Saturday," he said in a pre-match briefing at the Makati Shangri-la Hotel.
Despite this challenge, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is still hoping that sales will pick up in the next two days.
�I do not have details of ticket sales as PFF is only responsible for match day preparations for the game. The promoters are the ones handling ticket sales. The PFF is still hopeful that we have a full stadium,� PFF ad hoc projects head Boni Labrido told Sun.Star.
Meanwhile, Labrido confirmed that the PFF will pay P1 million to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for the rental of the 77-year-old pitch for Saturday�s event, which is set to kick-off at 7:30 p.m.
�The arrangements were made by (Azkals team manager) Mr. Dan Palami and (PFF president) Mr. Mariano Araneta. I have been made aware of certain details but not all,� he said.
Previous reports quoted Macabenta as saying that gate receipts will cover for the talent fee and accommodation of the LA Galaxy.

Azkals brace for tough match against Galaxy

THE stars of American soccer, led by glittering British football icon David Beckham, descended in the country yesterday with the arrival of the LA Galaxy.
Fresh from a thrilling 1-0 win over the Indonesian national team in Jakarta Wednesday night to kick off their three-leg Asia-Pacific tour, the Galaxy are scheduled to play the Philippine Azkals in a historic friendly tomorrow at the heritage-rich Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Irish ace Robbie Keane scored the winning goal in the 14th minute for the visitors in front of 30,000 soccer-crazy Indonesian football fans, the LA Galaxy website reported yesterday, against virtually the same side that finished second in last year�s Suzuki Cup.
Except for team captain Aly Borromeo, who is sidelined with a knee injury, the Azkals will play with the same players who lost to the Indons in the semifinals of Southeast Asia�s premier tourney last year.
Among them are Fil-Brit Rob Gier and Fil-Icelander Ray Jonsson who arrived Wednesday night to bolster the nationals� brittle defensive backline. Both were agog at the prospects of going up the newly-crowned Major League Soccer champions.
"It�s just an unbelievable opportunity," Gier said. "If you told me a few months ago we would be playing against David Beckham here in Manila, I would�ve laughed at you.
"It�s an amazing thing for football in the Philippines. I can�t wait to get out there and play," the 32-year-old veteran added.
While the Filipinos will be the decided underdogs, Jonsson said the Azkals would be looking for a win "because there is always a chance if we play good defense."
German coach Michael Weiss already had his first eleven in mind for tomorrow�s match.
"Jonsson, Gier and Anton del Rosario will definitely start in the back row while I�m looking for someone to replace Borromeo on defense," Weiss said in the team�s recent practice at the Rizal Stadium pitch. Expected to replace Borromeo is Fil-Am Jason Sabio.
During a press briefing yesterday, Weiss said the team strategy will be the same against Kuwait "since we cannot be na�ve against a top team like the LA Galaxy."
Beckham said while the Galaxy would like to play a "diplomatic game, we also would like to win."
Galaxy coach Bruce Arena shared the same sentiments, saying: "We will play hard, play fair and play to win."
At midfield, Weiss said he will field the steady quartet of Chieffy Caligdong, Jason de Jong, comebacking Chris Greatwich, who has been in Manila since Monday, and James Younghusband.
Opting for a "4-4-2" formation against the Galaxy, the German mentor plans to have strikers Ian Araneta and Phil Younghusband up front to spearhead the attack.
Weiss exhorted Filipino fans to go all-out in supporting tomorrow�s goodwill match, the last major outing for the Azkals this year.
"I hope we will send a clear signal, and a goodbye for the fans," Weiss said. "I hope they will come in masses. I hope the stadium will be sold out."
Due to the sluggish sales because local fans balked at the steep prices of tickets, the United Football League and Smart stepped in and offered 35-percent discounts on tickets.
The Galaxy will hold a football clinic for the poor children of Payatas this afternoon at the Rizal Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Philippines found itself in Group D, as in Group of Death, after the draw for the AFC Challenge Cup tournament was completed at the Asian Football Confederation headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.
The Azkals were drawn with North Korea, Tajikistan and India, which all topped the biennial tournament in 2010, 2008 and 2006, respectively.
The champion in the tourney will advance to the Asian Cup.
Nepal will host the event kicking off on March 8 in Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, the Philippines found itself in Group D, as in Group of Death, after the draw for the AFC Challenge Cup tournament was completed at the Asian Football Confederation headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday.
The Azkals were drawn with North Korea, Tajikistan and India, which all topped the biennial tournament in 2010, 2008 and 2006, respectively.
The champion in the tourney will advance to the Asian Cup.

MANILA, Philippines - Europe-based Azkals Ray Jonsson and Rob Gier arrived in Manila late Wednesday night for their friendly against the MLS Cup champions Los Angeles Galaxy on December 3 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Both Jonsson and Gier are excited to play the Galaxy, especially Gier who grew up in England like Galaxy superstar David Beckham.
"It's just an unbelievable opportunity," Gier said. "If you told me a few months ago that we would be playing against David Beckham here in Manila, I would've laughed at you."
"It's an amazing thing for football in the Philippines. I can't wait to get out there and play," Gier added.
Jonsson said that Azkals will be aiming for the win, even though they will be the underdog against the best football team in the United States.
"There's always a chance, if we play good defense," Jonsson said.

Weiss said they are expecting the LA Galaxy to be "strong opponents" even though the team will be coming from another friendly in Indonesia.
"They are tired from the long trip. I'm sure they're taking it a little bit easier but they will play with all their experience," Weiss said. "It will be an interesting game to watch."

ALREADY saddled by manpower woes, the Philippine Azkals suffered another setback when Filipino-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller informed German coach Michael Weiss that he can�t play in a friendly match against the LA Galaxy this Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
"Mueller informed me by overseas call Monday night that he could not come for the friendly match because of his commitments to his club MSV Duisburg in the German Second Division," Weiss said yesterday of the 23-year-old goalie who saw action for the national team in the last 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
Weiss said he asked Mueller if he could intervene on his behalf to suit up for Saturday�s match "but Roland declined my assistance because he would not like to jeopardize his stint for the Azkals when they play in the Asian Challenge Cup in March in Nepal."
With Fil-British Neil Etheridge, the Azkals� main goalie, also tied down to reserve duties to his Fulham side in the English Premier Division, the squad will have to make do with youthful Paolo Pascual and veteran Edward Sacapano to mind the net.
Team manager Dan Palami had no second thoughts about who would tend the goal, saying: "Sacapano, for sure."

When Bryant and his band of NBA superstars swooped down in the country last July, the stampede for tickets was so great that scalpers had a Christmas-like celebration.
That may not happen with Beckham and his Los Angeles Galaxy team as thousands of tickets for their one-game exhibition against the Philippine Azkals remain unsold, prompting a ticket seller to say, for those who may be intrested, that the best seats are still available.
Why the tickets are piled up at the box office could be traced to one thing: prices.
The prices are so over the top, the average Azkals fans who trooped in the thousands when the team played against Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Mongolia are simply not biting.
The MLS champions will face the Azkals on Saturday in what organizers dubbed as a �Dream Match�.
But the match could end up as a nightmare for organizers.
Even the cheapest tickets, pegged at P2,000 each, are hardly moving.
The most expensive seat is P15,500 while other seats are pegged at P12,500, P9,000, P7,000 and P5,000.
Organizers were so confident that the event will be a huge hit that tickets were sold for the open practice and football clinic slated a day before the match. Priced at P1,500-P3,000, there were few takers.
Meanwhile, 15-20 tickets will be raffled when Loyola Meralco takes on Stallions FC tonight in the UFL at the Makati pitch.
UFL has also offered a 35-percent discount on tickets if buyers give a code to a TicketWorld booth. TicketWorld, on the other hand, is offering a 10-percent discount for every 10 tickets purchased.

Manila, Philippines � Six days before the much-awaited friendly match between the MLS Champion La Galaxy and the Philippine Azkals, the Philippine Sports Commission is at a loss as to who will foot the bill for the two-day rental of the government-owned Rizal Memorial football field.
PSC chairman Richie Garcia said yesterday that it will likely charge the organizers and promoters of the goodwill game for close to P1 million since �they will not only use the football field but will take up the space of the entire Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.�

Garcia said he would have probably waived the rental if only the ticket prices are affordable to the public.
�But this is business,� said Garcia, stressing that the PSC had virtually waived the rental when the Azkals played there in the previous months.
Ticket prices range from a high of P15,000 to a low of P2,000. Other tickets are priced at P5,000, P9,000, P10,500 and P12,500, figures that Garcia said was too expensive.
�If they only lowered the ticket prices to the hundreds eh libre na ang rental,� he said.
Still, Garcia said the rental fee remains negotiable and he will take up this issue when the PSC Board meets this morning.
