MANILA, Philippines � Former Azkals coach Simon McMenemy has lost his job as manager of a Liga Super Indonesia team 16 games after taking over the post.
In a report posted on Soccer Central, the Indonesian team, Mitra Kukar, explained that the British coach did not meet the management's expectations, thus �the need to terminate his services.�
Mitra Kukar is currently 4th in Liga Super Indonesia with 27 points.
The team wants at least a runner-up finish this season.
McMenemy was credited for steering the Philippine Azkals to the semi-final round of the AFF Suzuki Challenge Cup in 2010.

Ex-Azkals coach upset over unreturned items
MANILA, Philippines � Former Azkals coach Simon McMenemy lashed out at his ex-wards,after the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) reportedly failed to ship his �possessions� back to him.
McMenemy, who coached the national booters in their ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup stint last year, vented on Twitter regarding the late delivery of his possessions.
�How difficult is it to forward someone's possessions? Was promised 4 months ago that they were sent. Azkals really letting me down,� he tweeted.
McMenemy, however, was apparently informed that his things will be returned sooner.
�Right, tomorrow I regain some of my possessions. Azkals better pull their finger out. Ruining my time there,� he said.
Meanwhile, Azkals team manager Dan Palami said actions have already been taken regarding McMenemy�s request.
�I have been informed that he asked that his stuff be shipped to Vietnam,� Palami told abs-cbnNEWS.com.
�All I know is that in January (the staff) already had his things inventoried and packed, and already gave the money for the shipping costs,� he added.
Palami, however, interpreted the incident as a "slight misunderstanding that will certainly be resolved in time."
McMenemey has been putting on a sour face after his coaching contract with the Azkals expired last December 31.
Feeling �disrespected,� the British coach ranted online on the PFF�s supposed failure to relay that he will no longer be coaching the team.
�No call, email, text, nothing. Been told by a friend who watched it on TV, this is not how to treat people,� he had tweeted.
The Azkals hired Hans Michael Weiss of Germany early this year to replace McMenemy.

McMENEMY ON TWO-YEAR CONTRACT WITH DONG TAM
HANOI (11 March 2011) � Former Philippines national chief coach Simon McMenemy has signed a two-year contract with V-League side Dong Tam Long An.
�I would like to try myself here to help Dong Tam play better,� said McMenemy, who replaces Brazilian coach Marco Barbosa at the helm.
McMenemy guided the Philippines national team to the semi-finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 last year.
They were denied a place in the final after losing to Indonesia in the two-legged final that was played in Jakarta.
�What he showed when in charge of the Philippines impressed us and we decided to choose McMenemy,� said Pham Phu Hoa, the club�s managing director.
With five points from five matches, DTLA are currently second from the bottom of the V-League.

Former Philippines manager Simon McMenemy is being linked with a return to Asian football as manager of Vietnam.
The 33 year-old Englishman made a big impression at the AFF Suzuki Cup last December when he masterminded the Philippines' shock 2-0 victory over reigning champions Vietnam, in one of the greatest upsets of the year.
Despite the Philippines' unprecedented success McMenemy lost his job due to some political manouvering and is currently out of work and considering a number of offers from around the world.
However a return to international management would appeal and he could be handed that opportunity after Vietnam manager Henrique Calisto left his post today. The experienced Portugese tactician is reportedly in advanced talks with Thai Premier League champions Muangthong United.
McMenemy�s name is believed to top the list of candidates to replace him after making a big impression on the Vietnamese FA at last year�s AFF Suzuki Cup.
Unheard of until his surprise appointment as manager of the Philippines, McMenemy made a name for himself by taking the team to the semi-finals of that tournament courtesy of draws with Singapore and Myanmar and the win over Vietnam.
Calisto was so upset at his side�s losing in front of 40,000 of their own fans that he refused to shake hands with McMenemy after the game.
It appears that the Vietnamese FA do not share a similarly dim view of McMenemy and are ready to make the Englishman the next manager of their national team.
Calisto, meanwhile, is set to succeed Roberto Carlos de Carvalho at Muangthong United. The Brazilian was in the job for less than a month before being axed due to some disappointing pre-season results.

Former coach McMenemy lauds Azkals' victory
MANILA, Philippines -- Simon McMenemy, the British football coach who used to handle the Philippine team, lauded the Azkals� performance against the Mongolian Blue Wolves in the recent Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifier.
McMenemy, who is currently in the United Kingdom, followed the Azkals� game against the Mongolians.
He said he could not explain his feelings while watching his former team perform versus the Blue Wolves.
"Mixed emotions watching the team. Sadness at not being involved but pride in the part I did play. Boys look good. Will go through easy," McMenemy said via his Twitter account.
Although sad for no longer being part of the team, McMenemy believes that there are more victories to come for the Azkals.
"To be honest it is personally kind of sad, but have to watch, want the boys to go on to greater achievements," he tweeted.
McMenemy even commended Emilio �Chieffy� Caligdong for scoring the first goal for the Philippines.
"Chieffy is capable of things like that. Glad it was him that scored first," he said.
It was McMenemy who steered the Azkals up to the semifinals of the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup.
The Azkals scored successful matches against Southeast Asian football powerhouses Vietnam and Singapore, before bowing to Indonesia in the semifinals.

MANILA, Philippines � Aggressive and offense-oriented. This is the game plan of the new coach of the Philippine football team Azkals as his team clashes against Mongolia in the Asian Football Federation (AFC) Challenge Cup in February.
"We'll push up the line a little bit more," Hans Michael Weiss told the media after the contract-signing between ABS-CBN Sports and Philippine Football Federation Monday at the ELJ Communications Center at the ABS-CBN Compound in Quezon City.
"We'll be closer to the goal," Weiss added.
Weiss, who has previously managed teams in China, Japan, and Rwanda, arrived in the country last week to lead the team's training and conditioning routine.
He said the team must try a "different approach" to come strong against their Mongolian foes.
"We should not underestimate Mongolia too much," he said.
The Azkals, who rose to stardom overnight after defeating Vietnam - the AFF champion during the last season, lost to Indonesia, 0-2 in the semifinals last December.
In the dying minutes of the concluding Philippines-Indonesia game, the Azkals was reduced to 10 men, a player short of 11 per side. They also had three players getting yellow cards, or warning, for fouls.
After the Azkals' loss, Indonesia, on the other hand, thumped Malaysia to bag the crown.
New coach, new players
A new batch of half-Filipinos are expected to buttress the team and will arrive in the country next week. But they will not yet be allowed to play in the February games, coming fresh into the team.
In an interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com, Weiss revealed he is confident with his lineup of "quality players."
"They're good prospects. They are players who grew up in a very different environment... that's very important," he said.
Weiss said everyone in his team has had his own unique experience in football. He said each style and knowledge acquired about the game will enrich the team as its players gear up for the AFC Cup.
"For me, there's no Filipino or foreign players. There are just players who have had different training," he said.
Meanwhile, the Azkals said they are looking forward to playing under the leadership of a new coach.
"It's great. [He] has a different aspect," the team's captain, Aly Borromeo, said. "I believe we'll have a solid team [against] the Mongolian team."
Phil Younghusband, one of the team's most popular players along with brother James, said he is relying a lot on Weiss. "Coach promises we'll be fit for the game," he said.
"He knows what he's talking about, he has experience. We're looking forward to playing the game," he added.

Macca�s reign as Philippines coach ends
SIMON McMenemy�s run as international coach of the Philippines is over.
The popular former Worthing Football Club assistant manager has been replaced by German Michael Weiss after the Philippines Football Federation appointed a new president, although McMenemy only found out he had been sacked on Twitter.
Some reports suggested McMenemy had been replaced because he did not hold a UEFA B licence, which is a regulation set by the regional governing body, the AFC, but McMenemy, 33, said: �I�d been speaking to the AFC, who were prepared to help me but there was a lot going on behind the scenes in the Philippines.
�There were two presidents of the Philippines Football Federation while we were in the Suzuki Cup and the new president, approved by FIFA, got appointed soon afterwards and the German Federation offered finance, which they do with a lot of other countries, to help develop the team but, in return, they wanted their own coach.
�It�s unfortunate but is one of those things. It�s a sore one to take as it got leaked on Twitter.
�The president, who was at a wedding, ended up having to do a television interview over the phone to explain what had happened, although that was still done before he told me.
�I�m frustrated because it feels like a job half done but if you can�t handle decisions like this, you shouldn�t be in the industry. It�s just part and parcel of football.�
McMenemy will not be short of offers for the future, after raising the profile of football significantly in the Philippines, and said: �I�m waiting for the Philippines Football Federation to call me.
�They�ve said they don�t want to lose me and are putting together something for me. I could be offered the head coach of the under-23 Philippines role, which is an offer I�m willing to listen to.
�I�ve also got lots of other offers on the table of club management in South East Asia, so they�ll be talking to my agent and we�ll wait and see.�

PFF wants to keep McMenemy to train the youth

PHILIPPINE Football Federation (PFF) President Mariano Araneta assured former men�s football team British mentor Simon McMenemy he won�t be totally displaced after the PFF has decided to hire a highly rated German coach.
Araneta, who arrived on Saturday from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress in Qatar, told
The Manila Times in a phone interview that he will talk to Azkals team manager Dan Palami regarding the fate of McMenemy.
�Dan and I will discuss about the situation because we really don�t want to put him out since he is responsible to Azkals� improvement,� said Araneta, referring to Mc-Menemy�s big accomplishment when he helped the team reached its first Suzuki Cup semifinal appearance last year.
The lack of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) license, said Araneta, is the main reason why the PFF tapped a new mentor since it is one of the requirements needed for the Azkals� participation in the AFC Challenges Cup on February 9 in Bacolod and 16 in Mongolia.
But Araneta, who replaced the beleaguered former PFF chief Jose Mari Martinez on November 27, said they will still consider hiring McMenemy to coach the Philippines 17-and-under team because his expertise is also a valuable asset to Philippine football.
�We can�t allow him [Mc-Menemy] to just go. We still need him,� he said. �He can help us develop our young team. In terms of basic things in the game, he can help us. We�re considering him to coach in tournaments outside the country which doesn�t need any UEFA license.�
Without UEFA license, Palami has chosen German Hans Michael Weiss to replace McMenemy for the coming AFC Challenges Cup after meeting with Weiss and officials of the German Football Association last week. McMenemy�s contract expired in December.
McMenemy, who guided the Philippines to a 2-0 upsetting of reigning champion Vietnam and drew its game against Myanmar and Singapore on the way to the semifinals in Suzuki Cup, is reportedly �disappointed� with the PFF decision.
But Araneta said the PFF will get in touch with McMenemy soon.
Palami said Weiss was highly recommended by the Germans, who will extend an assistance package that will include subsidy meant to help augment the cost of bringing the new coach to the country.

�Dan and I will discuss about the situation because we really don�t want to put him out since he is responsible to Azkals� improvement,� said Araneta, referring to Mc-Menemy�s big accomplishment when he helped the team reached its first Suzuki Cup semifinal appearance last year.
The lack of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) license, said Araneta, is the main reason why the PFF tapped a new mentor since it is one of the requirements needed for the Azkals� participation in the AFC Challenges Cup on February 9 in Bacolod and 16 in Mongolia.
But Araneta, who replaced the beleaguered former PFF chief Jose Mari Martinez on November 27, said they will still consider hiring McMenemy to coach the Philippines 17-and-under team because his expertise is also a valuable asset to Philippine football.
�We can�t allow him [Mc-Menemy] to just go. We still need him,� he said. �He can help us develop our young team. In terms of basic things in the game, he can help us. We�re considering him to coach in tournaments outside the country which doesn�t need any UEFA license.�
Without UEFA license, Palami has chosen German Hans Michael Weiss to replace McMenemy for the coming AFC Challenges Cup after meeting with Weiss and officials of the German Football Association last week. McMenemy�s contract expired in December.
McMenemy, who guided the Philippines to a 2-0 upsetting of reigning champion Vietnam and drew its game against Myanmar and Singapore on the way to the semifinals in Suzuki Cup, is reportedly �disappointed� with the PFF decision.
But Araneta said the PFF will get in touch with McMenemy soon.
Palami said Weiss was highly recommended by the Germans, who will extend an assistance package that will include subsidy meant to help augment the cost of bringing the new coach to the country.

McMenemy out as Azkals coach
MANILA, Philippines -- The mentor who led the Philippine men's football team to the semifinals of the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup will no longer coach the Filipino booters this year.
Speaking to ANC on Saturday, Azkals team manager Dan Palami said British Coach Simon McMenemy's contract expired last December 31.
�We have had discussion with Simon before, especially as he had yet to get his license for the different tournaments that we're going to participate in this coming year,�
The certificate Palami was referring to is the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) coaching permit.
McMenemy feels �disrespected�
However, McMenemy claimed that he was not informed about his replacement as Azkals team coach.
In his tweet, the British coach lambasted the team management's lack of effort to communicate the decision directly to him.
"Feels totally disrespected. No call, email, text, nothing. Been told by a friend who watched it on TV, this is not how to treat people,� he said in the microblog.
German assistance
Azkals team manager Palami explained during the ANC interview that an offer from the German football federation triggered the decision to replace McMenemy.
�While he (McMenemy) is doing that (acquiring the UEFA certificate), the German federation came in and offered their assistance� included in the package would be a high-level German coach that they would want the Philippines to take,� said the Azkals team manager.
Among those being strongly considered to replace McMenemy is German football coach Hans Michael Weiss.
Palami added that the German federation made the offer after seeing the Azkals� performance in the recent Suzuki Cup.
�They're willing to coach the Azkals in their training camps in Germany and they're willing to do the scouting for potential players for the national team all over Europe. And they're doing it for free. They are willing to send over the team to a European camp so that we could strengthen further our chances,� he said.
Palami also said that several players from Denmark and Germany are also interested to play for the Philippine team.
�There are several players from the first division in Denmark, for example, we have Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena. They also have a second division player in Germany, Stephan Schrock who is coming in,� said Palami.
The Azkals� team manager said that the rest of the players who are not playing in the first and second division in Europe will have to comply with the team policy requiring players to try out in the Philippines.

Azkals manager Dan Palami yesterday announced the entry of German Hans Michael Weiss as its head coach.
Weiss brings with him a lot of hope and experience when he takes over the Azkals� training on Jan. 16, three weeks before the start of their AFC Challenge Cup tie against Mongolia.
The 45-year-old Weiss will replace Simon McMenemy, the English coach who steered the Azkals to a historic semifinals stint in the recent AFF Suzuki Cup.
�He is highly-experienced and knowledgable, and he has a UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) license. This ushers in a new era for the Azkals and will certainly give us better results,� said Palami.
The Filipino team manager also thanked McMenemy for his services to the team and Philippine football in general.
In just four months, McMenemy helped turn things around for Philippine football, and helped provide the wake-up call for Filipinos who have seemed to turn their back on the sport.
�I thank Simon for all his contributions to the team,� said Palami.
Palami returned from Germany yesterday, and said his quick visit yielded positive results from the German Football Association (DFB), not just in the hiring of Weiss but in terms of training camps and grassroots development programs.
Palami said more Filipino players with foreign blood are knocking on the Azkals� doors, but he stressed that these players will have to prove themselves first, and join the tryouts just like any local-bred players.
�Hopefully, the Azkals will continue their momentum not only in 2011, but also in the coming years. For the moment I cannot comment on anything. After next week, the Philippine soccer world will know more,� Weiss was quoted as saying in an online post.
Over the last four years, Weiss, a native of Dennenfels, Germany, served as technical director of the Rwanda Football Association.
Weiss� resume is two inches thick.
Before his stint in Rwanda, he�d been with the Chinese Football Association as well as the Kyoto Purple Sanga of the Japan Football League, and has had internships with Spain�s Real Madrid, England�s Arsenal, Argentina�s River Plate and FC Kaiserlautern.
The Azkals will host the Mongolians at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City on Feb. 9 and will be in cold Mongolia on March 15 for the second leg of the tie.

New contract with Azkals� coach still up in the air

MANILA, Philippines�The fate of English coach Simon McMenemy remains hanging even as national football team manager Dan Palami is meeting with officials of the German Football Association (DFB) in Frankfurt for a possible assistance package for the Philippine team.
McMenemy, who has received offers to coach a club team in Vietnam and in Indonesia, reiterated his desire for another tour of duty with the Azkals, who made a surprising run to the semifinals of the recent Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup.
�I want to stay where I am because I feel like the job is only half done,� McMenemy told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Although the Azkals beat Vietnam, 2-0, to all but seal their place in the semifinals, they failed to score in their last three matches, including in the two-leg semifinals against Indonesia in Jakarta.
Palami expressed hope that sports fans and observers would respect whatever decision they would make on the coaching of the team.
�We are only after what we feel is best for the team and I hope the fans will understand that,� said Palami, who bankrolled the squad and also paid for McMenemy�s wages.
The possible grant package from the DFB could include a German coach who would be assigned to handle the Azkals, Palami said.
�I think we should consider the offer if there�s an offer,� he added.
McMenemy applied for the Philippine coaching job last year to replace compatriot Des Bulpin, who started preparing the Azkals in December 2009 before leaving the squad in the middle of 2010.
But McMenemy lacks the license required for him to coach in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup next month.
Palami said he has already talked to a coaching candidate in German Karsten Neitzel, who worked as the assistant coach with the Urawa Reds in the Japan League, and would meet with two more prospects Thursday.
The 43-year-old Neitzel, a defensive midfielder who played in the Bundesliga (German first division), also coached Freiburg in the German second division from 1999 to 2008.
Palami said he was able to meet several Europe-based players with Filipino lineage interested in joining the Azkals.
But Palami said the players needed to prove their worth to claim a spot in the roster.
Among those who expressed desire to join the team is Dennis Cagara, who was represented by Jerry Lucena, a veteran midfielder playing in the Danish League.
The 25-year-old Cagara, born to a Filipino father and a Danish mother, plays leftback for AGF Aarhus. He has played for Denmark�s Under-21 side.
�We have several talented players ready and seriously raring to be an Azkal,� Palami said. �Some flew in from Denmark, the rest drove several hundreds of kilometers, and the rest took more than an hour of train ride just to meet with me and express their intention to play. I told most of them to go to Manila and be tested if they indeed have the Azkal bite.�

Azkals brass meet Germans while McMenemy waits
Philippine Football officials head for Germany on Monday for a two-day meet with the Deutscher Fussball Bund (DFB, the German Football Federation) to discuss how the Germans can help not just the national squad but Philippine football.
The DFB provides aid, training and technology to some 17 countries.
According to Philippine football officials, the DFB has also offered the services of Hans Michael Weiss as a coach for the national team.
Whether that means the English head coach Simon McMenemy will be replaced is unsure at the moment.
When asked about the Philippine job, Weiss, who has worked with Rwanda, the Chinese and Japanese Football Associations, and worked as an intern with Real Madrid FC, Arsenal FC, Argentina�s River Plate, and the Bundesliga�s FC Kaiserslautern, said, �Hopefully the Azkals will continue their momentum not only in 2011, but also in the upcoming years. For the moment I cannot comment on anything. After next week the Philippine soccer world will know more.�

In a conversation with McMenemy on Sunday, the Englishman informed the BusinessMirror that AFF officials have signified their intention to help him secure the license needed to continue with the Azkals.
�I�d love to comeback and continue what we started with the Philippines,� said McMenemy. �Hopefully, we can secure a long-term contract because I think we can put together a three-year plan to make the team better and go farther.�
McMenemy clarified reports about Vietnam being interested in his coaching services.
�It wasn�t only I who received offers,� underscored the former Worthing FC assistant coach. �The players were also getting interest from different countries. As for Vietnam, it was a club team from their premier league. As I understand, it was the former team of Mr. [Henrique] Calisto.�
Calisto is the head coach of Vietnam who piloted the emerging Asean powerhouse to the 2008 Suzuki Cup title and refused to shake McMenemy�s hand after the Philippines� 2-0 win in the group stages.
Calisto, who is Portuguese, accused the Philippines of degrading the sport by �parking the bus� in the endgame.
McMenemy countered by saying, �I believe that the objective is to win the game. And you do what it takes to do that.�
The BusinessMirror also learned that James and Phil Younghusband have been offered $6,000 each to play for an Indonesian club.
The National Team returns to action on February 9 when they host the Mongolian National Team in Panaad, Bacolod City, in a home-and-away series in the qualifying stages of the AFC Challenge Cup. The visitors are ranked No. 182 in the world by the world governing body Fifa. The Philippines is currently at No. 150.
