UMass Historical Scans --- 1987

I've added 13 scans from four different UMass game programs from 1987 to the "UMass Historical Scans" folder. You can also access the scans by clicking on the image in the side bar.

One cover is from the UConn-UMass  game at Storrs. Be sure to read the UConn essay on the Minutemen-Huskies football rivalry. If we go FBS, can we get that restarted?

One scan has the Alumni Band's tribute to George Parks on his tenth year as director of the UMMB.

Picassa shows a bigger view of the photo album by clicking on the magnifying glass symbol in the upper right hand corner. That allows easier reading of text pages.

The scans include articles on UMass greats Todd Rundle, Jim Vertucci and Peter Montini. In 1987 Paul Mayberry, Pete Montini, Todd Rundle, Mike Barrette, Joe Cullen, John McKeown and Vito Perrone all made All-Yankee Conference.

1987 was a down year with the Minutemen finishing 3-8. UMass won the Yankee Conference championship the previous and following years (1986 and 1988).

In 1987 Kevin Smellie led UMass in rushing going 143-687 2 TD's. Dave Palazsi threw for 281-150 1,868 10 TD's.

The College Football Hall of fame has its enshrinement ceremony this weekend (includes bios of Coach Mac and Milt Morin).

The South Bend Tribune has a feature article on Coach Mac.

Matty Vautour has a story about Milt Morin, who was still a fan of UMass football.

There is a new Youngstown State Blog available. It's at http://letsgoguins.com/. I'm not doing a link because it has a flash script that my OS keeps complaining about. It you visit, you should probably turn off Flash.

If you're running FireFox, Sea Monkey or other Mozzilla web browsers, you might consider No Script, which blocks java script, flashlight and other scripts. It will make your web browser a lot more secure.

This writer ranks the Big Ten's OOC and has UMass as the 5th "worse" game. The writer does not seem to know much about FCS teams. I think Southern Illinois has a chance against Big Ten bottom feeder Illinois (3-9 last year).

Michigan's Big House could contain the entire population of the US Virgin Islands or it's the 5th largest city in Michigan on game day.

Today is fifty days until football starts! Wearing #50 for UMass this year will be Josh Samuda, a 6-4 310 pd RS JR OL from Hollywood, FL. Josh has started in 22 of 23 games he's played in. Should start again at LG in 2010.

UMass History -------1981

I've added ten scans from UMass game programs in 1981 to the UMass History link in the sidebar. Double click on the first 1981 image and then use the arrow keys to view that group. Click on the above image for a larger view.

The Minutemen went 6-3 that year (note that was the last year we only played nine games) and were 4-1 in the Yankee Conference and won UMass' 13th Yankee Conference Championship.

In the images displayed, we lost to Rhode Island 10-16 and beat Dartmouth 10-8.

Gary Pearson was first team All-American that year. He rushed for 1,026 yards. Captains Peter DiTommaso and Jerry Gordon are active in the UMass Friends of Football.

One sad note is that UMass center Victor Pizzotti recently passed away.

UPDATE: As pointed out by "Brad82" over on AGS, #56 OG for the Rams was Mike Dwyer. He later transferred to UMass and was moved to NG. He was first team All-Yankee Conference and First Team All-American for us in 1985. He wore #71 for UMass.

DVD's of UMass Football Games available

This was brought to my attention by "UMass'96" over on the UMass Message board. The NCAA has DVD's of former UMass Football games.

It's called "NCAA on Demand".

It's got UMass' 1998 Championship game as well as other playoff games. I'm going to order the 1998 Championship. I have a tape of that game, but you will remember they cut most of the first quarter to show some @%$#& stupid basketball game. It will be nice to have the entire broadcast.

UMass Football History

I've taken some time to edit and re-organize the scans of the various UMass Football Historical material in the "Scans of UMass Historical material" section of the blog. I've added date captions to all the images.

Also added were scans from 1976 that were in the main blog but never were placed in the historical folder.

The material covers:

UMass History 1979

Below are scans from three different game programs in 1979. They present the roster list, team photo, starters and coaches.

The first image of the series shows the UMass-Maine program of 09/22/79. It has pictures of all the trophies that UMass won in 1978, when we went to the first FCS/I-AA championship game.

The old Beanpot Yankee Conference trophy is in the front.

In 1979 UMass went 6-4 overall. We went 4-1 in the Yankee Conference to tie with Boston University for the league title. Two of those losses were to Villanova and Boston College (both I-A in 1979)

UMass Captains were Mike McEvilly and Kevin Sullivan.

In the coaches, Paul Pawlek went on the Head Coach at Northeastern, Mike Hodges became head coach at UMass (and Richmond and VMI for Reid). Clarence Brooks and Ken Conaster went on to a long coaching careers.

Kevin Sullivan CB and Sandro Vitello PK were All-Yankee Conference first team.
