National team isn�t a full-time job.�

That was how James Younghusband justified his and his brother Phil�s absence from the Philippine national men�s football team�s ongoing training tour in the United States.

Without the Younghusbands, the Azkals were walloped by semi-professional side Chicago Inferno, 3-1, early Sunday Manila time in the first game of their tour. The Younghusbands stayed in Manila to attend to several commitments, including playing in a charity exhibition match organized by CLEAR.

James pointed out that unlike in Europe, where national players receive big salaries to play football, Filipino players need to grab at opportunities that come to them.

In previous interviews, the Younghusband brothers have pointed out that they are not just football players, but they also serve as guardian to younger sister Keri. The siblings were orphaned last year after the death of their mother Susan.

As the Azkals rose to national consciousness after their surprising semifinal run in the 2010 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup, the Younghusbands� stardom also skyrocketed, luring many endorsements and showbiz appearances which made them the most popular member of the national team.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss said he understands the position of the Younghusband brothers. �For the close to two years that I�ve been with them, they have done so much,� Weiss said.

But he also said that the situation is getting trickier. �It has now come to a point that I have difficulty explaining to players who are always there and have potential,� Weiss said. �I told them that you are the pillars of the national team. You must commit yourselves.�

But Phil said it�s all about communication.

�It�s important to let the players know what is going on. If players aren�t aware, then they would then think that it is unfair,� he said.

Despite the distractions off the pitch, the Younghusbands still reiterated their commitment to the national team. Come September, they vowed to train with the team until the Suzuki Cup in November.

�We will still be with the team,� Phil said. �We just had to do something elsewhere.�

Azkals coach fine with Younghusbands absence from US training camp

Philippine national men�s football team coach Hans Michael Weiss said that he understands the many commitments of brothers Phil and James Younghusband outside the Azkals that will force them to miss their upcoming training camp in the United States.
Weiss said that he knows that Younghusbands are only grabbing as many opportunities as they can to have a better future. Now orphans, the popular brothers are responsible for taking care of their 10-year-old sister.

However, the German coach admitted that he won�t let these kinds of distractions hurt their preparations.

�It has now come to a point that I have difficulty explaining to players who are always there and have potential,� Weiss said. �I told them that you are the pillars of the national team. You must commit yourselves.�

Weiss lauded the recent performances of national team players Carli de Murga, Dennis Cagara and Marwin Angeles, who can all step up when the Azkals� key players are unavailable.

The Azkals are set to fly to the United States for their training camp in August, where they will face United Soccer League squad Chicago Inferno and the US Virgin Islands national team as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November.

Knowing how vital the Younghusband brothers are to the national team, Weiss said that he won�t just drop them right away from the lineup.

�For the close to two years that I�ve been with them, they have done so much,� Weiss said. �Before you make a harsh decision, you weigh all the options.�


According to Weiss, the Younghusbands have promised to concentrate on the Azkals after September. But he said that this only proves that all players have to work their way to get a spot in the lineup, no matter what they have achieved in the past matches.

�No one is indispensable,� Weiss said. �I can bring younger players who have aspirations.�

Younghusbands� mom dies of heart attack

The mother of Philippine Azkals players Phil and James Younghusband passed away Saturday night, the Younghusbands� manager said on Sunday.

In a text message, manager Cathy Rivilla said Susan Younghusband, 49, died of a massive heart attack around 10:30 p.m. Susan is survived by her three children: James, Phil, and Keri.

The death of the Younghusbands� mother was sudden as people close to her said she had no lingering illness, according to a report on GMA News TV�s Balitanghali newscast.

MANILA�Unattached the past few years, brothers Phil and James Younghusband will finally get to play regular club football, this time in the Philippines.



The two popular members of the national team, who spent time with English Premier League club Chelsea when they were teenagers, are set to sign three-year deals with Loyola FC-Meralco in the United Football League, which starts with a UFL Cup competition in October.



�The Younghusbands see joining the UFL as a win-win situation,� a reliable source close to the Fil-British brothers said.



�Joining Loyola will allow them to play club football and also give them an opportunity to help uplift the level of football in the league.�



Phil is the national team�s current top scorer with 15 goals since debuting for the Azkals in 2006, while James has tallied four so far.



The brothers� entry comes as another boost for the UFL, which has struck a five-year, P150-million television deal with TV5 to have its matches aired live.



The brothers are the latest members of the Azkals joining the Manila-based premier league.



Striker Angel Guirado has also linked up with Global FC, joining teammate Misagh Bahadoran, while Nate Burkey and Jason Sabio have signed with Kaya FC, where skipper Aly Borromeo and Anton del Rosario are regulars.



Defending league champion Air Force has Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta in its fold, while Army boasts of Ed Sacapano, Roel Gener and Nestorio Margarse.

Younghusbands to miss Azkals match in Iloilo

ACOLOD CITY. � James and Phil Younghusband will not be around when the Azkals play in an exhibition match Tuesday in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, hometown of football chief Mariano Araneta Jr., and the start of the nationals� team bonding in Cebu the succeeding day.

But the absence of the two Filipino-British siblings, both team mainstays, has the approval of national team manager Dan Palami and coach Michael Weiss, according to Cathy Rivilla, the executive director of The Younghuband Football Academy.

The Younghusbands were invited by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission to conduct a football clinic last Saturday at the West Negros University football grounds as a side event of the POC-PSC Philippine National Games 2011.

"We had a long meeting last night with Dan and coach Weiss last week to discuss the commitment of the Younghusbands to the national team and their outside commitments," Rivilla, who also acts as an adviser to the brothers, said. "The meeting went well and they understood the boys� situation."

Rivilla said she and the two siblings, who no longer have a father, were able to explain to Palami and Weiss why the brothers were involved with other activities such as commercial endorsements and the academy.

"As elder brothers to a younger sister, they are looking after her and their future. Phil and James are also now building a house," Rivilla said.

She said the Younghusbands failed to join the opening day of the national team�s training last week because they both saws action in the Luzon eliminations of the Smart Club Championships the previous week.

The Younghusbans will miss the exhibition match in Barotac Nuevo because of activities involving them that were scheduled far ahead of the game, Rivilla said, adding this would also affect their stint in in Cebu.

She, however, said both Younghusbands have not overlooked their national team responsibilities.

"Phil and James know their key roles on the national team and remain committed to fulfilling their obligations to the squad," Rivilla said.

"Contrary to the perception of some, they are heavily bonded to the Azkals. You can go ask (co-captain) Aly Borromeo how bonded they are."

She said the Younghusbands will eventually go to Cebu for the team bonding "because that�s when the heavy training resumes."

When the Azkals return to Manila to resume their build-up and preparations "you can expect the Younghusbands to devote more of their time to the national team," she stressed.

The Filipino booters, who are expected to be trimmed down to the regular 23-man roster, are scheduled to leave on June 12 for Duren, Germany for the final stage of their tune-up for their Asian World Cup qualifying opening leg against Sri Lanka on June 29 in Colombo.

FILIPINO football fans will surely get a big kick out of this: Phil and James Younghusband are set to make their club debut for San Beda FC that will see action in the Smart Club Championships.

"They have started training with San Beda FC under former national coach Aris Caslib and will compete in the Smart tournament," a reliable source said yesterday.

The source said by joining San Beda FC "the Younghusbands are showing everyone they really want to stay in the Philippines and play here."

The Filipino-British siblings, products of the English Premier League Chelsea Football Club program, have been in the country for nearly four years.

They rejoined the national team, popularly known as the Azkals, last year and were key factors in the squad�s sensational run to the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup, Southeast Asia�s men�s football championship.

James, 25, and Phil, 24, launched the Younghusband Football Academy last year to impart their soccer experience and skills to young hopefuls whose numbers have grown immensely largely through the success of the Azkals.

"It has been a long since we have been considered professional football players and we are very happy to have that opportunity again, especially in the Philippines," the source quoted Phil as saying.

"It has been our dream to be professional football players since we were kids," Younghusband added. "We feel privileged and proud that we are given this opportunity in the Philippines."

The Younghusbands have declined huge offers coming from Indonesia.

While midfielder James saw action for the Azkals in last month�s Asian Challenge Cup qualifying group tournament in Myanmar, striker Phil had to stay behind after tearing his right hamstring in the second match of the ACC qualifying series against Mongolia in Ulan Bator earlier.

Since then, James has been undergoing therapy and is expected to be back in harness when the national team resumes fitness training next month.

MANILA, Philippines � Filipino-British James and Phil Younghusband, members of the popular Philippine Azkals, conducted a football clinic over the weekend in Taguig City and enjoyed their stint so much they promised to be back in the summer for more interaction with the city�s youth.

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano said the brothers assured her of their return after the two-day football clinic at the BNS Parade Ground Naval Station, Fort Bonifacio where some 240 Physical Education (PE) instructors and teachers participated.

�The Azkals have granted our wish. Come this summer, they have agreed to teach the young people of Taguig how to play football European style,� Cayetano said.

Cayetano likewise said that she felt proud the Younghusband brothers, behind the Younghusband Football Academy, first chose the P.E. instructors of Taguig as their �students� to whom they imparted their knowledge and insights on the game of football.

Twenty-four-year-old James himself seemed to be satisfied with the performance of the teachers, who will be tasked to share their knowledge to their own students in hopes of spreading local interest for football.

�This is a �train the trainers program.� It�s like a coaching seminar for public school PE teachers where we teach them little fun drills for little kids just to keep them interested in the sport. Through this we are able to reach more people,� James said. �It�s been pretty good so far.�

Phil, 23, for his part, said that one of the goals of the Younghusband Football Academy is to show that Filipinos can excel in football.

PSSI Stands in Way of Signing Filipino Players

The Indonesian Premier League�s Jakarta 1928 FC has been having a hard time signing up the Younghusband brothers of the Philippines.

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is making sure it won�t get any easier.

PSSI secretary general Nugraha Besoes on Thursday said he has contacted the Philippine Football Federation and asked it not to recognize the professional contract being offered by Jakarta 1928 to Philippine national team players Phil and James Younghusband.

�I explained all the developments in Indonesian football to [PFF president Mariano] Araneta and also about the illegal league,� Nugraha said, referring to the IPL.

�I told him that if the transfer goes through, it will be dangerous for both the PSSI and the PFF because we could be sanctioned by FIFA.

�I asked the PFF not to issue the International Transfer Certificate for both Younghusbands.�

MANILA---Fearing repercussions on their international football careers, brothers Phil and James Younghusband have deferred taking up an offer to play for Jakarta FC of the newly formed Indonesia Premiere League (LPI).


The Younghusband brothers met with LPI general manager Arya Abhiseka and officials of Jakarta FC yesterday in Manila, but the proposed three-year deal to bring them to play for the Indonesian club was not finalized.


Though the brothers did not discuss it, people privy to the negotiations told the Inquirer that there were concerns the former Chelsea reserve players may face sanctions from the International Football Federation and the Asian Football Confederation since the league is not sanctioned by the Football Association of Indonesia (FAI).


�Nothing is finalized yet, but once it is final, we will come out with a statement,� Phil said in a text message to the Inquirer.


FAI general secretary Nugraha Besoes had sent the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) a letter Wednesday urging the PFF to discourage the Younghusbands from signing with the club.


�We kindly ask your good office to prevent your national players to be (sic) in negotiations with such a club to prevent damaging their football careers in the future,� said Besoes in his letter to PFF counterpart Chito Manuel, a copy of which was obtained by the Inquirer.


Besoes described Jakarta FC as an �obscure football club playing in a runaway competition which has been declared by Fifa as unacceptable as they are not within the structure of the FAI.�


Franco Lorenzo, the assistant team manager of the Azkals, who is helping out in the negotiations, said they �cannot compromise the players� interests,� one of which is to represent the Philippines in international competitions.


�That�s why there was no decision made,� Lorenzo said. �The Younghusbands should not be dragged into the internal strife in Indonesian football. We have to be convinced that nothing will happen to them if they play for Jakarta FC.�

Indonesian Premier League Hopes to Boost Crowds by Signing Younghusband Brothers

The newly formed Indonesian Premier League will likely attract more fans, particularly women, if one of its clubs succeeds in signing Filipino brothers Philip and James Younghusband.

IPL general manager Arya Abhiseka said on Tuesday that the Younghusbands, who caught the attention of Indonesian fans during the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup in December, would sign three-year contracts with the Jakarta 1928 football club today.

�There are still several contract details that need to be ironed out, but there�s a 90 percent chance that Philip and James will sign with Jakarta 1928,� Arya told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday.

�I believe the deal will likely happen and they will soon both play for their new club in the IPL.�

He said the Younghusbands, who have an 11-month age difference, wanted to play together, which is why Jakarta 1928 decided to recruit both of them.

Arya also said he believed the addition of the two would be a great boost to the IPL, which is a breakaway league not recognized by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).

�I think they will add quality to the play in the IPL and, of course, will attract more fans, especially women,� he said.

However, Arya said he did not know the details of the contract.

�They are not one of IPL�s marquee players, so contract details are the club�s prerogative,� he said.

Jakarta 1928 officials were not immediately available for comment.

James, the older of the brothers, appeared to play down the talks on Tuesday evening.

A tweet by Philippine sports journalist Chino Trinidad quoted James as saying: �We are still talking. Our priority is still the PHL Azkals,� referring to the Philippines national team.

Younghusbands won't stray from Azkals

MANILA, Philippines
- The Younghusbands are not breaking up with the Azkals even if they soon end up playing for the Jakarta 1928 FC in the Indonesia Premier League.

�Yes, there�s interest from other clubs,� said the 24-year-old James, confirming a standing offer, a lucrative one, for them to play for the Indonesian ballclub.

�But we have other commitments. We have the academy and the national team,� he added yesterday, referring to the The Younghusbands Football Academy (TYFC).

The younger Younghusband, the 23-year-old Phil, said they remain committed to the national team, which recently made a lot of heads turn in the AFF Suzuki Cup.

�I can�t say definitely if we�re going somewhere else right now. I can�t divulge any details on that right now. But definitely we�re still playing for the national team,� he said.

The Younghusbands, Filipino-Britons, started playing for the Philippine team in 2005 and have been based here since last year. They have put up their own football academy.

They announced the TYFA schedule in yesterday�s PSA Forum, along with executive director Kathy Rivilla.

On tap are football clinics for young players, their trainers and coaches, at Ateneo de Manila on Jan. 13, the Tarlac Recreational Park on Jan. 20 and 21, in Palawan on Jan. 29 and 30, the Alabang Country Club on Feb. 19, in Taguig on Feb. 26 and 27, in Cebu and Iloilo in mid-April, Metro Manila in April to May, back to Alabang on May 14 and 15, and Lanao del Norte in June.

In between camps, the two products of the Chelsea Football Club program will honor their commitment to the national team or even the Indonesian ballclub if indeed they end up with the latter.

They have played major roles in the resurgence of Philippine football, and along with a handful other Fil-foreign players, are expected to do more in the coming years.

The Azkals, fresh from a historic semifinal finish in the Suzuki Cup, are in the AFC Challenge Cup. They will face Mongolia on Feb. 9 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod, and on March 15, in Mongolia.

The Younghusbands showed mixed reactions on the decision of the Philippine Football Federation to tap a new coach, Hans Michael Weiss of Germany, in favor of Simon McMenemy.

We�re very disappointed that Simon won�t be with the team anymore, and we wish him the best,� said Phil of the 33-year-old Englishman who coached the team in the AFF Suzuki Cup.

�But it�s a new year, a new start under a new coach. We also look forward to his new ideas and what he can bring to the team,� said Phil, who like his brother is armed with a UEFA coaching badge.

�We only have one month to prepare for the AFC Challenge. And our new coach must learn the players� names, and how we play. There are new players coming in as well, and it�s good for the team,� he added.

�This should be a good year for Philippine football,� James assured.

If not, a better one for the year that just passed.

Younghusbands set to play for Indonesian football club

Unattached the past couple of years, Filipino-British brothers Phil and James Younghusband are set to resurrect their club football careers.

The Younghusband brothers are close to signing a deal with Indonesian club Jakarta 1928 FC, which is seeing action in the newly formed Indonesia Premier League (LPI).

Franco Lorenzo, a member of the management team of the Philippine football team, who has been negotiating for the Younghusbands, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer last Sunday that the deal would be finalized within the week.

Jakarta 1928 officials are arriving in Manila on Wednesday for a possible contract signing, according to Lorenzo.

Lorenzo did not disclose contract terms, but said the Indonesian club had enough funds to convince the brothers, who shone for the Azkals during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup.

The 19-club LPI, Indonesia�s rebel football league because it competes with the Indonesia Super League under the Indonesia Football Association and is backed by oil tycoon Arifin Pangoro, kicked off last January 8.

Indonesian players seeing action in the LPI have been warned that they would not be considered for the national team.

The league, however, has lured one of the country�s more popular teams, Persema Malang, which boasts Indonesia national team star striker Irfan Bachdim.

The Younghusband brothers gained a lot of following in Jakarta when the Philippines played Indonesia in the semifinals. The Azkals lost the two legs via similar 1-nil scorelines.
