Cebu Football - USC claims 2 titles in Sinulog Cup

AFTER its Under-17 squad fell short in the first day of the football festival, University of San Carlos (USC) won big yesterday by capturing two crowns in the 1st Sinulog Football Festival on their home pitch in the USC-Technology Center.

USC succumbed to Abellana National School, 1-0, in the Boys 17 championship match the other day but won the mens and ladies open divisions.

The USC mens team beat visiting Masbate, 3-1, in a penalty shootout while its womens team won the league-type tournament by finishing with 11 points, just a point ahead over CTU.

The mens open championship match went to penalty shootout after the regular period ended in a 1-1 draw.

Former RP Under-19 keeper Paolo Pascual saved the day for USC after deflecting the shots of the first two kickers of Masbate. Patrick Uno and Kenyan Bernard Rotich converted both penalty shots for the win.

They showed good performance even though they were off from vacation and only had a week of practice, an elated coach Gary Panagsagan told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Panagsagan said the Under-17 teams will be joining the Rifa Cup in Manila, while Under-17, mens and womens open teams will be joining this years Thirsty Football Cup.

In the Inter BPO division, Convergys 2 beat Innodata, 2-0, in penalty shootout to win the title, while Erco-B clinched the 38-and-above crown after edging out Count FC, 2-1, in penalty shootout.

Paref-Springdale crushed Canduman Elementary School, 4-0, to bring home the title in the Boys-12 category.

Organizer Francis Ramirez said he is satisfied with the result of the very first Sinulog football event and promised next years event to be better.

(It was) successful but we will do it better next year with enough preparation.
