Smart to give P100,000 to club champion

CAGAYAN DE ORO   A P100,000 cash prize awaits the  first champion of the PFF-Smart Club Championships, Smart Sports executive Epok Quimpo announced Saturday.

We are giving this as an incentive to the  remaining teams left in the tournament especially with the semifinals set to kick off at the University of Makati next week, said Quimpo at the close of the tourneys group eliminations here and in Iloilo yesterday.

Rizal-Smart San Beda FC nipped Laos FC-Leyte 2-0 for its second straight win and a total of six points in Group A here last Thursday to assure itself of a spot in the knockout crossover semi-finals starting at the University of Makati on Tuesday.

A win is worth three points while a draw is one point.

The other slot was being disputed by Teknika and Laos, which drew 2-2 in the opener last Tuesday, as they faced San Beda and Bao Breakers-Iligan separately at the Don Mariano Pelaez Sports Complex at the close of the competition here.

While the Teknika booters, who clobbered Bao Breakers, 9-0, last Thursday, can afford at least a draw to advance, Laos must need a winning margin of 11 goals against their rivals to clinch the other semis berth by goal difference.

Over in Iloilo, it was a still a toss-up for the two semis seats, although Columbia FC-Davao appeared to have the inside track with its 1-0 upset of Pachanga last Thursday for its second win in a row and has six points in pacing the Group B standings.

Stallions FC of Barotac Nuevo, which crushed Baguio United, 10-3, last Thursday, and Pachanga have four points with a win and a draw each. The NCR booters beat the hosts, 2-0, last Tuesday.

In both matches scheduled at 3 p.m. Saturday, Barotac and Davao were to collide at the Barotac Nuevo field while Pachanga went up against Columbia at the Central Philippines University.
The crossover semis pits the Group A topnotcher against the Group B runner-up and vice versa, with the winners qualifying for the home-and-away title series unfolding on Aug. 20. (Press Release)
