Ott to play for Azkals in SEA Games

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals' Southeast Asian Games campaign got a big boost when Filipino-German midfielder Manny Ott decided to join the team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In his Facebook account, Ott posted: "Got my ticket today =) Sea Games im coming.... Filipino Heart won!"

Ott previously said that he is looking for a club in Germany. "My heart is beating for the Philippines. I'm very, very sad, but I have to think about my future," he added.

Ott, who made his debut for the senior team in January 2010, said he is looking forward to joining the Azkals in Indonesia.

He will join Azkals mainstay Jason de Jong, along with Matthew and Mark Hartmann as leaders of the Philippine Under-23 football team.

The PH XI are hoping to win their first ever medal for football this year. They will open their SEA Games campaign against a higher-ranked Vietnam squad on Thursday.

Former Pa. Gov. lobbying for TU in BE

Ed Rendell introduces Hillary Clinton at Temple University.

We'll have a complete preview on the Temple vs. Ohio game tomorrow (which is really the only important thing to me right now) but I thought I'd use Monday to share some good news.
Former two-term Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell came out solidly behind Temple's all-sports inclusion into the Big East Conference in a very big way today with an appearance on WIP Sports Radio (94.1FM and 610AM).
The Villanova Law grad also lectured his "other" alma mater on obstruction and really ripped them a new asshole, for want of a better term.
Since all of the Big East presidents are in town for the next two days, we assume this has gotten around and hopefully they will take Rendell's advice to heart.
Place cursor over the gray area and advance it forward to the 5:25 mark.

Biantan: Becks may miss Manila match

Monday, October 31, 2011

LONDON -- I may sound very killjoy but there is a big possibility that England's football superstar David Beckham might not play for the LA Galaxy against the Philippine Azkals when they meet in a friendly match in Manila.

The LA Galaxy-Philippine Azkals clash is set on December 3 at the Rizal Memorial stadium, and there are few reasons why Beckham may not suit up for Galaxy.

Beckham's five-year contract with Galaxy is expiring in December and there's a number of European teams running after his services in spite of his very ripe age of 36.

In England alone, the club of his father--the Tottenham Hotspur's--has been courting him since last year. He even tried to get a loan contract with the Spurs and practice with them during the Major League Soccer's (MLS) off-season.

Galaxy and Spurs did not agree with the money and Beckham failed to get a loan deal. Queen's Park Rangers (QPR), now owned by Malaysian billionaire Tony Fernandez is also reportedly trying to get Becks' signature seriously.

But the most serious interest of all comes from outside, England. French League top team Paris St. Germain is bent on signing up Becks. PSG's current Brazilian general manager Leonardo and Becks worked together in AC Milan during his stint with the Italian giants.

SEA Games 2011 Ticket Prices

Two venues being used in Jakarta for this year's SEA Games. These are the prices for the Group Stage at each venue

Bung Karno Stadium (Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand)

VVIP - 250,000 IDR
West VIP - 150,000 IDR
East Vip - 100,000 IDR
Category 1 - 75,000 IDR
Category 2 - 50,000 IDR
Category 3 - 25,000 IDR
Category 4 - 15,000 IDR

Lebak Bulus Stadium (Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor Leste, Vietnam)

Class 1 - 100,000 IDR
Class 2 - 75,000 IDR
Class 3 - 50,000 IDR
Class 4 - 25,000 IDR

Opening games are at Bung Karno with Vietnam v Philippines at 4pm and Laos v Myanmar kick off 7pm. At those prices don't expect a sell out.

Indonesia v Singapore has been scheduled for a 2pm kick off which is barmy, a bit like the weather. The one game I really want to see, it is also on absolutely the wrong day. For me at least.

Anyway based on 9,000 IDR to the USD what do you think of those ticket prices?

Cebu Queen City United eyes UFL 2nd division

By Mike T. Limpag
Sunday, October 30, 2011

AFTER a hectic six weeks preparing for the UFL Cup, the players and coaching staff of the Cebu Queen City United will take a break before taking to the pitch anew for its next challengethe the United Football League Division 2.

We are planning to hold another tryout soon so we can get more players but for now, we will be resting, said head coach Mario Ceniza, who also handles Paref Springdale.

Unlike its shortened preparation for the UFL Cupwhich only lasted a monthCebu Queen City United will have a longer preparation for the league, which is expected to start in January.

Ceniza is also hoping the team gets to play a lot of friendly games with tough non-Cebu based teams so the squad will get to adjust to the style of play in the UFL, where top teams are quick to pounce on defensive errors to score a goal.

I think its better that before coming up with the final lineup, we can have a lot of friendlies so we can really see how the players perform, said Ceniza.

The players need not be college students, though Ceniza said college varsities have the advantage because they are already fit.

As long as the players meet our requirements. They dont have to be in college, because as of now, I cant really speak for what the club can offer for them, he said.

Azkals making progress in Japan training camp

MANILA, Philippines - Coach Michael Weiss and team manager Dan Palami are both pleased with the progress of the Japan training camp of the Philippine Under-23 pool bound for the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia next week.

Although still missing Europe-based players Carli de Murga, Roland Mueller, and Jeffrey Christiaens, the U-23 crew led by Jason de Jong, Matthew and Mark Hartmann, OJ Porteria and Jinggoy Valmayor have made the most out of their sessions in Gotemba, Japan.

The camp and training have been fantastic so far. We have worked very hard on cohesion, offensive and defensive patterns in the way we want to play our game, Weiss said in an email to The STAR.

Phl XI played two friendlies in Gotemba, scoring a 5-1 win over Hiryu FC and yielding a 0-2 setback to a U-18 JFA Academy side backstopped by some national mainstays.

Apart from training, we went to study the training of Shimizu S-Pulse J1 Club and had the opportunity to talk to (top players) Naohiro Takahara, Shinji Ono and Freddy Ljungberg, a former Arsenal player, said Weiss.

The Filipinos flew to Tokyo Saturday to watch the J-League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup finals, where the Kashima Antlers won over the Urawa Red Diamonds,1-0, observing how its played in the big leagues.

The team was slated to play Tokyogakkan Urayasu HS football team yesterday as the final tuneup of their Japan sojourn. It is scheduled to arrive in Manila today and depart for Jakarta tomorrow, two days ahead of their Nov. 3 match with Vietnam.

The Philippine squad is scheduled to play against regional football powerhouse Vietnam on November 3 at the Utama Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Indonesia, a week ahead of the SEA Games opening ceremonies on November 11.

Coach Hans Michael Weiss brought a 30-man squad to Japan, but a final cut of 20 players will see action in the SEA Games.

The team is made up of local talents backed up by at least seven experienced international campaigners. Among the U-23 squad are brothers Matt Hartmann and Mark Hartmann, Jason de Jong, Jacques Van Bossche, Patrick Hinrichsen, OJ Porteria, Jeffrey Christiaens, David Basa, Mark Drinkuth, Romeo Martinez, OJ Clarino, Jingoy Valmayor, Neckson Leonora, Reymark Fernandez, Lemuel Unabia, Joshua Beloya, Jake Morallo, Marwin Angeles and goal keepers Paolo Pascual and Christopher Camcam.

Germany-based first choice goal keeper Roland Mueller and Fil-Spanish striker Carlie de Murga will follow the team in Indonesia. Fair Play: PHL's Seag stint not 'same-same'

(This is my Fair Play column for Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 30)
WE WERE traveling with Thai journalists on our way to the Thailand vs. Philippines match in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games when the visiting mediamen broke the ice and asked, in halting English, if we were willing to bet on the results.

I give you butt if 1-0, the guy said.

We just arrived in Bacolod and were tired from all the traveling so, it was kind of strange to hear some foreign media guy talking about butts going to a football game.

But, after a few more exchanges in broken English, we learned he was willing to bet 100 baht, and were even willing to spot us two goals.

Photographer Ruel Rosello and I wisely didnt take it but we asked a bahts value compared to the peso.

Same-same, he said.

When we got to the venue, the Thai journalists and us got separated but another Thai national got my eye, and no he wasnt offering butts for anyone.

Clad in a costume that seemed unsuited for the weather in Bacolod, the guy was seated with Pinoy fans and was cheering wildly for Thailand and applauding the home team whenever it had a shot at goal.

The guy was very friendly, and despite sitting with the home fans, there were no exchange of hostilities. It helped too that aside from asking for tips from his seatmatesat one point, he was screaming PALAKPAK, PALAKPAK, PALAKPAK!he had the Philippine flag painted on one cheek, and the Thai flag on the other.

I later learned that the guy was sort of the unofficial cheerleader for the Thai football team whenever they had games abroad.

The Philippines didnt have that kind of support.

Then.

But now that the Philippines is again joining the Southeast Asian Games for the first time since 2005, and just for the second time since 1999, the U23 team wont be lacking support once they play in Indonesia.

The Pinoys in Indonesia will surely be cheering and one guy will lead them, a guy whose legend was born on Feb. 9 due to liberal amounts of rhum cokethe Blue-Haired Fanatic.

There is one dramatic move that I hope gets shown on YouTube these days. When the cops, unsure of how to deal with the strange phenomenon  of a blue-haired guy, with the Philippine colors painted on his face, carrying the Philippine flag on a track oval just minutes of a home match, tried to shoo him away.

But with a flair for the dramatic, BHF planted the flag, kneeled and bowed as if to say, I dare you to take this flag away from me.

He was arrested.

I later learned that coach Michael Weiss told the PFF to find that guy because he was the perfect guy to lead the fans.

Now, nine months after his birth, the guy who will go down in the record books as the first to be arrested for streaking in a football game in Philippine soil is off to Indonesia, to lead the fan support for the Southeast Asian Games.

Yep, Philippine football is not same-same since the last Seag.

And the U23 team, which is currently training in Japan, has a really good chance of improving on the 2005 finish of 1 win and two losses.

For 15 minutes in 2005, when we were leading Malaysia, 2-1, I thought the impossible was happening, we were going to make the semifinals.

But of course, Malaysia spoiled that by scoring three goals to win, 4-1.

This years U23 team has a solid shot to make the semis for the first time since 1991, when most of the members were babies, since they got the luck of the draw and will avoid Southeast Asias tough teams in the group stages.

It will take on dangerous Vietnam on Nov. 3, Timor Leste on Nov. 7, Laos on Nov. 11, Myanmar on Nov. 13 and Brunei on Nov. 15.

The schedule, too, favors the team. After facing the toughest teamVietnamon opening day, it takes on Timor Leste next.

And of course, in both games, the Blue-Haired guy will be in the stands.

Queen City eyes UFL second division

(This my story for Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 31)

As long as the players meet our requirements. They dont have to be in college, because as of now, I cant really speak for what the club can offer for them, he said.

Ceniza also said the rigid training of the team, and their day jobs, took its toll on the players.

The team, which practiced every morning and every night for the UFL Cup, was formed less than two months ago and some of the players are not based in Cebu City, like goalkeeper Alex Boanghog, a policeman assigned in Carcar, and Carmen-based Jack Reston, Martin Bontia and Ronald Mahilum.

I am impressed with Alex because even if he has a hectic schedule, he really tries to join our practices, said Ceniza.

As for Reston, Bontia and Mahilum, Ceniza said that during their night-time practices, which end at 8:30 p.m., the three sometimes arrive home in Carmen at 1 a.m.

Ceniza also said that he had to pull out Junard Aguilar in last Saturdays match because the striker was already getting very tired.

The coach said Aguilar arrived at past midnight  before the Saturday match because his 5 p.m. flight was delayed by five hours.
Aguilar couldnt leave with the teamwhich flew to Manila at Friday dawnbecause of his job in a bank.

Pag gawas, higda dayun, Ceniza said. He already showed signs of dehydration. He played really well during the first two games. It was only in the last game that he was off.

Cebu Queen City United lost all its matches in Group C, which was considered the group of death in the UFL Cup. Cebu was grouped with defending champion Global FC, which finished third, the Stallions and Pachanga FC.

Global, Pachanga and the Stallions also made the semifinal round of the PFF Smart Club Championships last summer.

The UMass defense looked like one of Don Brown's defenses of old yesterday as Minutemen defenders pulled the legs off the Spiders.

The Spiders rushed 27 times for 1 net yard.

UMass had 6 sacks and knocked Aaron Corp out of the game.

The UMass defenders had 13 TFL and 4 INTS for 103 yards in returns. The UMass defense's performance was as good as it gets.

The Minutemen offense was less stellar. UMass punted 6 times. Three times UMass had first-and-goal and came away with zero points. Minutemen TE Emil Igwenagu and Rob Blanchflower had only one catch each. The offense went 3-14 on third downs and 0-3 on fourth downs. One good thing was we did not turn the ball over, which meant Richmond never had a chance to rally.

The kicking game continued to have problems. UMass missed two makable FG's. UMass averaged 26.2 net yards per punt.

With two out of three remaining games at McGuirk, UMass has a chance, with the way the defense is playing, to end their time in the CAA with a statement.

UFL: Pachanga trounces Cebu XI

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, PhilippinesNewcomer Pachanga blanked Cebu Queen City Landmasters United, 4-0, Saturday to clinch top spot in Group C in the United Football League Cup at the University of Makati pitch.
Barotac Nuevo-born striker Joven Bedic was on target for the third straight game while three other players scored for Pachanga, which finished on top of the group after tallying seven points on two wins and a draw.
Pachanga leapfrogged past Stallion FC as the top team in the group heading into the last 16. Defending champion Global is also well-positioned to reach the next round from the group as one of the wildcard entries intended for the two best third-placed teams.
In the second game, Pasargad and Green Archers fought to a 1-1 draw.
With the stalemate, both teams advanced as the top two teams from Group G with Green Archers ruling the bracket with seven points and Pasargad finishing second with four.
The other qualifiers for the last 16 so far are Nomads (Group A), Loyola Meralco and Team Socceroos (Group B), Stallion FC (Group C), Kaya-Cignal and Diliman Victory Liner (Group D), Air Force Phoenix and Navy Red Juice (Group E) and Philippine Army (Group G).
Bedic, who struck in matches against Stallion and Global, completed the scoring for Pachanga in the 54th minute with a half-volley from the edge of the area after a long punt from goalkeeper Mark Sorongon.
Substitute Ronnel Lagrimas, coming in for the injured Shilmar Felongco, struck in the 13th minute, firing a first-time shot into the bottom corner after he was set up by Alu Kigbu.
The Cebuanos also had their chances with Ariel Cahilig testing Sorongon from long range in the 28th minute and also from a tight angle five minutes later.
Cebu was made to pay for not taking their opportunities as Gino Palomo doubled the lead for Pachanga in the 42nd minute.
Rushing down the right flank, Palomo did well to slot the ball beyond the Cebu keepers reach, before finding Kigbu a minute later who had plenty of time and space to fire into the back of the net.

Cebu loses final Group C match

THE Cebu Queen City United bowed out of the UFL Cup without a win and a goal after losing to Pachanga, 4-0, in its final Group C match at the University of Makati field yesterday.

The team, which spent more than P500,000 on airfare alone for its stint in the Manila-based league, finished at the bottom of the Group of Death after losing all three matches.  Pachanga, which also featured Cebu-based Joshua Fegidero, who coaches Bright Academy and the University of San Carlos, finished on top of the bracket with seven points on two wins and one draw.

The Stallions got second place with six points, while Global FC of Dan Palami and coach Graeme Mackinnon took third spot with four points and is expected to make the knockout stage as the best third-placer.

Who will get the wild cards in the knockout stage will be determined after the final two matches between Union and Baguio in Group A and Manhur and Sunken Garden in Group G today.

Despite the scoreline in yesterdays matchwith three goals scored in the first halfCebu had a better showing and even owned majority of the attacks.

But just like in their previous game, the Cebuanos werent able to convert on their eight chances in the first half, with three of them on target.

Junard Aguilar has the first best chance with a header off a corner but his attempt bounced off the grass and over the crossbar, while Lemar Baunsit also tried a shot from left flank that sailed high.

In the 13th minute, a weak back pass from David Gerali gave Ronnel Lagrimas a perfect chance to beat Alex Boanghog for the first goal of the match. The keeper, a policeman assigned in Carcar City, redeemed himself with a wonderful save in the 24th, while Ariel Cahilig forced Pachanga keeper Mark Sorongon to punch save in the 28th.

Aguilar had another chance with a one-on-one in the 33rd but Sorongon foiled him again, and Gino Palomo made Cebu pay with the second goal in the 42nd.

With Cebu still reeling from the goal, Aly Kigbo took advantage of a sleeping Queen City back four to score the third goal in the 43rd.

In the second half, the Cebuanos showed better passing and but they still couldnt find the first goal.

Joven Bedic made it 4-0 as with a wonderful volley in the 64th that stunned Boanghog for the final tally.

Rene Menchavez, who replaced Aguilar in the final 10 minutes, also had a shot but couldnt beat Sorongon in the 87th minute as Cebu, formed less than two months ago, closed out their campaign without a goal.

In the second game, the Green Archers conceded a goal in injury time and were held to a 1-1 draw by Pasargad in Group F. The Archers still advanced on seven points, with Pasargad finished at No. 2 with four points.

Brown's punch recalls NCAA champ Klecko

Classic coach Hardin quote at the 1:19 mark.

If a day without Temple football is a day without sunshine, we'd have cloudy days about 353 days a year and no sunshine at least six days a week during the football season.
Still, today's cloudy and rainy (and later, snowy) weather is a metaphor for how I'm feeling without Temple football on a Saturday in the fall.
It's pretty gloomy, made all the more dull by the fact that I have to sit on the egg the Owls laid in Bowling Green last week for nine long days.
If I'm feeling this way, I can't even imagine how hard it is for the kids who have to strap on the helmets at the E-O.
Steve Caputo's father was fond of yelling out "THAT'S TEMPLE FOOTBALL RIGHT THERE"  in his booming voice a few rows behind me when someone made a big play over the last couple of years.
When you let a team hang on the ropes
for this long, a lucky punch can beat you.
Sadly, I don't know what that was last week but that wasn't Temple football right there.
Not even close.
There were moments, though, and Matty Brown's punch (legal, of course) was one of the rare highlights of the day to me.
Heck, it might have been the highlight of the season if I didn't have to associate it with a loss.
Brown combined a straight arm with a simultaneous punch of a BGSU defensive back and picked up an additional 12 yards during a long run that set up Bernard Pierce's touchdown.
I haven't seen a Temple player punch like that since Joe Klecko.
Many of you know who Joe Klecko was, a great All-American tackle at TU in the 1970s who later became the most famous member of the New York Jets' sack exchange.
Not many of you, though, know that Klecko was the two-time NCAA heavyweight boxing champion in 1974 and 1975.
Yes, back then the NCAA offered boxing on a club level and Klecko took it up as something to do between the end of football season and spring practice.
He messed around and became NCAA champion. The fights were three rounds and Klecko had to wear head gear, but he knocked out everyone in a "field of 64" tournament on the way to the title. Klecko was unbeaten in the postseason, with his only two losses coming to a boxer named Bruce Blair during the regular season as he made the transition from football legs to boxing legs. His collegiate record was 25-2.
The NCAA no longer offers the sport, even on a club level.
I've got to believe, after seeing what I saw last Saturday, if the NCAA brings it back we've got a lightweight champion on our hands in the 5-7, 150-pound Brown.
I hope the entire team takes Brown's fighting spirit back to Ohio on Wednesday night and comes away with a TKO.
After waiting this long to get back into the ring, they should be mad enough to throw their weight around. For guidance, all they have to do is look at the way Brown tosses his.
TODAY'S PICKS
(Home team in CAPS; favorite with
points in parenthesis)
Central Michigan (8) 30, AKRON 14 _ I can't believe a team that beat Northern Illinois is 2-6. Akron has no such impressive win.
WESTERN MICHIGAN (11 1/2) 24, Ball State 10 _ Number is a little high, but Western has beaten Bowling Green, 45-21, and lost to Illinois, 23-20. Loss last week to Eastern Michigan was a head-scratcher.
Bowling Green (4) 21, KENT STATE 13 _ I can't believe this number is so low. Kent State's 400 fans aren't going to make enough noise to keep this any closer than a touchdown.
Buffalo 14, MIAMI of Ohio (5) 10 _ Upset special. Buffalo is trending upward. Miami only beat Kent State, 9-3, and then lost to Toledo, 49-28.
Others:
Rutgers is getting seven points against visiting West Virginia and should cover that; Louisville is giving three points to visiting Syracuse and should cover that; visiting Western Kentucky is getting six points at Louisiana-Monroe even though the Hilltoppers have won three straight so I like Western to come away with the upset there and cover.
Record:
Season (SU) 43-24; Season (ATS): 24-33.

Fan Pressure Forces Action

Not a headline you're ever gonna read in England.

There was widespread disappointment in Malaysia when it was announced ticket prices for today's Malaysia Cup Final between Negeri Sembilan and Terengganu were set at 50 RM, compared to 30 RM for last year's showpiece.

Fans protested on line and off and there were threats the game would be boycotted. Now however it seems the state football associations have stepped in and will subsidise ticket prices for fans.

A noble gesture and an interesting reaction to fan power. But would never happen in England where Arsenal patronisingly brushed off the 6.5% price rises ahead of the current season as necessary to keep the squad together...and that was before they sold Nasri and Fabregas.

Of course it's worth pointing out football clubs in England have to source their own income while state FAs in Malaysia rely on handouts so find it easier to pull the odd populist stunt.

Fil-German Manny Ott to miss SEA Games

MANILA, Philippines The Philippine Under-23 squads bid for a first medal in the Southeast Asian Games football competition in Indonesia suffered a blow after Fil-German midfielder Manny Ott ruled himself out of the event to search for a new club in Germany.
With seven appearances for the senior team, Ott, a vital cog in the Azkals run to the second round of World Cup Qualifying, could have been one of the most experienced players in the SEA Games squad, which faces Vietnam in its first match on November 3 at the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Im searching for another club here and so I have to stay and play for my team, Ott said in his Facebook account. My heart is beating for the Philippines. Im very, very sad, but I have to think about my future.
Ott, whose mother hails from Caticlan, Aklan, is attached with FC Ingolstadt II, which plays in the fourth division in Germany.
Otts absence gives additional responsibilities to the veteran Jason de Jong to lead the side in Jakarta.

Fair Play: UV Lancers: From champs to chumps?

(This is my Fair Play column for Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 29)
THIS years University of the Visayas will not only be remembered as the team that failed to advance to the Cesafi basketball finals for the first time, but as a team of sore losers who resorted to dirty tactics because they failed to get the job done.

And in the process, this years team tarnished what nine other UV teams have accomplished and what last years team gracefully showed in defeat.

Previous Lancers won the first nine Cesafi basketball titles and when they lost it, they exited as former champions, gracefully.

This is what former coach Boy Cabahug said after losing to UC last year.

It was our destiny to be in the finals and UC was destined to be the champions. Just try to imagine, we only had one win in the semifinals and yet we made it to the finals.

This is what UV coach Felix Belano said (translated) after last Tuesdays fracas.

Even I didnt want that to happen. But its a lesson for Cesafi. To improve the league, they should correct and improve the officiating. I kept calling the attention of the referees but they didnt pay attention. They didnt make the right calls. Thats why
I got disappointed because they didnt show respect. The calls werent fair. If we look at the bottom of it, would the crowd have reacted that way if the officiating was fair?

Respect? Doesnt that go both ways, coach? You cant really ask for respect, you have to earn it.

In 2010, after trailing by 21 points, 58-37, the UV Lancers showed their true character by not wilting, and fighting to within one, 70-69, and even gaining the lead, 72-71, before falling short to lose Game 4, 73-72, and the series, 3-1.

Now thats character. Thats not giving up. Thats respecting the game and the opposing side and giving the fans what they wanta ball game.

Last Tuesday, after falling by as much as 22 points, UV resorted to bullying. Showing the ugly side of a team that refuses to acknowledge that it can be defeated.

Why?

When the teams character was tested, the players and the coach wilted?

Why?

When they couldnt find an answer to what SWU was doing to them on the basketball court, the best they could find was play dirty and blame the referees?

Why?

From championship-caliber, theyve become chumps?

Of course, the officials are to be blamed. They always are.

And, we all know that 95 percent of the time when officials are blamed, its because losers just cant accept they were out-smarted, out-played and out-hustled.

Coach Belano and the present crop of players also forgot that when they put on that Green Lancer uniform, they not only represent themselves or their school, but they represent a community, and more importantly, an idea.

The idea that UV is all heart. That UV is a university with a heart.

And what kind of heart did their actions show?

That when the going gets tough, UVs guys get all toughie?

And it seems, UV team manager Samsam Gullas agrees.

We added insult to injury with what our players have done. This is not what we teach our students, he said.

Samsam apologized for his teams action and promised to come up with a better team for next years season. Perhaps aside from looking for skilled players, they should also look for those who dont wilt under pressure.

Players who excel when the going gets tough, not players who channel their inner Manny Pacquiao when the other team is winning.
UV, because of its nine titles, became the face of Cebu collegiate basketball for nearly a decade but because of what the team has done last Tuesday, it has become a wart that deserves to be hidden.

Champions fall all the time. But sometimes, champions come out the winner despite losing. UV showed that last year.

This year, the Lancers showed how a team can lose so much more, after losing a game.

What a loss.

PFF eyes 8-year plan for coaches development

(This is Cheska Geli's story for Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 29)
THE Philippine Football Federation (PFF) will implement an eight-year plan to increase the number of qualified coaches in the country.

As shared by PFF Technical Director Ariston Caslib, the plan will increase the number of grassroots coaches who will be instrumental in the development of football and in creating tough teams to compete in international tournaments.

Six grassroots courses are projected next year and each seminar aims to attract at least 50 participants.

The class will be open to teachers, parents and volunteers who will be oriented with basic football coaching

In Cebu alone, the six courses will gather a total of 300 grassroots coaches per year.
Under the eight-year plan, there will be a total of 2,400 participants for each of the 33 football associations in the country.

Aside from that, nine international courses will also be conducted throughout coaches in the country.

The two-week course is under the program of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Cebu Football Association was able to host the AFC B License Coaching Course in Liloan last July.    We have been active in hosting development courses and if we will be consistent, in four years time, we will be the next station for AFC A license course in 2014, said Caslib.

It has also been the first time in the history of Fifa to allow four courses of the Grassroots Pro-Active Instructors Course in a country. It is usually limited to one.

The four courses in the Philippines were held in San Carlos City, Iloilo, Davao and Baguio.

This shows the Fifas belief in us that we can move forward, said Caslib.

A goalkeeping course in Manila will also be offered and it is linked to the plan of creating a strong national under-17 team that will compete in the world championships by 2017 to 2019.

The plan will be concretized once it gets the approval of board after the PFF elections this November as well as the funding from Fifa and AFC.

Other countries such as Germany and Japan have also pledge support.

Queen City fights for pride

(This is my story for Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 29)
A DETERMINED Cebu Queen City United will play for pride today as it takes on the dangerous Pachanga FC in its final Group C match of the UFL Cup at the University of Makati field.

Cebu Queen City, which lost its first two matches to Global FC and the Stallions, is no longer in the hunt for a spot in the knockout stage, while Pachanga still has a chance to finish at No. 7 in the standings and will face the No. 10 qualifier in the round-of-16.

A win by Queen City will also put Global FC as the second qualifier in the Group of Death, but Pachanga is still expected to make the KO stage as the wild card.  The Stallions, which finished with six points on two wins, topped the group.

The team is in high spirits again. Taas ang motiviation, said coach Mario Ceniza.

Ceniza admitted that after the teams 8-0 loss to the Stallions last week--which was aired live over national television--the players were demoralized.

But I told them that past is past, he said. Tomorrow (today) the least that they can do is to play for themselves, for the club, our sponsors and for our fellow Cebuanos. Dinhi matest ila character.

Since they lost starters Ronald Mahilum and Nino Zapanta to suspensions and co-captain Rocky Garciano to an old injury, Ceniza said he will be tweaking the lineup for todays game against Pachanga, which is owned by former national team member Freddy Gonzales.

Set to start for the Cebuanos today are goalkeeper PO2 (Not SPO2 as earlier reported) Alex Boanghog Jr., Jack Reston, Dave Gerali, Marion Cubelo, Lemar Baunsit, Ariel Cahilig, Julius Acre, team captain Jan Michael Flores, Rommel Cuizon, Junard Aguilar and Mitsu Tsunakiri.

The reserves are goalkeeper Gary Garciano, Yance and Rene Menchavez, Blui Arriola, Carlito Abadia and Josaphat Sacil.

The Cebuanos are familiar with Pachanga since Ruben Doctora Jr., and Joshua Fegidero played for Crazy Horse during the 2010 Cebu Interclub. Boanghog and Tsunakiri also played for Crazy Horse.

The club has to overcome a few hurdles just going to Manila for todays game, which was supposed to be played in the opening weekend last Oct. 9 but was moved due to the rains in Manila.

Initially, the UFL informed Queen City that it would try to have the game be held in Cebu but last Wednesday, the league informed them that the board decided to have it in Manila at 2 p.m., which will be the first of todays televised games.

Nagkapuliki mig book sa tickets, club president Glen Quisido said. May na lang nakakuha mi. (We had to scramble for tickets and it's a good thing we were able to book)

Because its a long weekend, tickets are hard to come by and since they booked late, the team had to spend almost P250,000 on airfare alone--more than twice the amount it spent last weekend, which was at P90,000.

The team is set to meet with the UFL officials today to request them if they could shoulder some of the amount they spent for the re-scheduled game.

Wala pa nay labot sa kaon (That's doesn't include our food), said Quisido. All the hotels we called are fully booked. Its a good thing we managed to contact Dan Palami. We are staying at his house now. Nagpabaga na lang mi nawong. (Really can't translate this, right?---Mike)

Cebu Queen City United, which is backed by Landmasters, is one of two non-Manila based teams and flies to Manila for its game. It has spent more than P500,000 for airfare for four weekends in Manila, including the opening day when its game was cancelled.  The team also pays for the salaries of the coaching staff and 25-man team as well as spending for its training and equipment)

Aside from the Queen City vs. Pachanga match, the Green Archers will also take on Pasargad today at 4 p.m. to determine the second qualifiers of Group E, while Baguio FC, the other non-Manila based team in the UFL, takes on the Lions at 7 p.m.

Azkals will play to win vs Galaxy: Palami

by Camille B. Naredo, abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Azkals will be gunning for a victory when they take on major league soccer team LA Galaxy in a friendly at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on December 3.

Team manager Dan Palami assured Azkals fans that the team will not be "star-struck" when they play against stars such as David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane.

"We're going to play against them to win," Palami said.

He added that for some of the Azkals, this will not be the first time that they will play against high-profile football players.

"Some of them have played against big name players already, in the Champions League," he explained.

Palami is confident that the Philippine national football team can give the Galaxy a competitive match and hopefully make a statement.

"We want to prove to the Philippines and to the world that we could give a team such as LA Galaxy stiff competition," he said. "This will pave the way for other teams to come here, knowing that they will be challenged properly."

SEA Games 2011 Draw Changed

I have no idea what it is about this part of the world but the powers that be, no matter what country, seem incapable of drawing a match schedule and sticking to it. Oh no, there has to be a whole heap of tinkering and changes done.

The SEA Games have changed their match dates, at least for one group. Why? Who knows. Things don't happen in this part of the world 'cos they need doing, things happen because they can be done by incompetents on power trips.

SEA GAMES 2011: PHILIPPINES AIM FOR TEN POINTS

MANILA (28 Oct 2011) Other than taking it one game at a time, the chief coach of the Philippines, Michael Weiss is aiming to win just ten points from the group stage of the SEA Games next month.

The Filis are placed in Group B of the biennial championship against 2009 runners-up Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Timor Leste and Brunei.

If we get 10 points (from three wins and a draw) most likely we will qualify for the next round, said Weiss.

There is no aspect in playing against Vietnam. They are one of the five real opponents. We might lose 7-0 but still have a chance of advancing. If we beat all the other teams then we are through.

However, Weiss was quick to caution that while the plan is to win ten points, it is also imperative that they take it one game at a time.

We will take it one game at a time, one step at a time, he added.

There should be no speculations for gold, silver, finals, blah, blah, blah thats stupid. Its just dreaming and nothing about the real football world, just too much dreaming.

It will be one game at a time, one strategy for each game at a time.

Weiss admitted that their first game in the group against Vietnam will be tough, compounded further by the fact that they will have to play with four players under jet lag condition.

The four players concerned are Filipino-Spanish defender Carlos Alberto de Murga, Fil-Germans Roland Mueller and Manny Ott and Fil-Belgian Jeffrey Christaens.

Aboitiz Cup adds three divisions

(This report by Cheska Geli came out on Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 28)
LOCAL coaches will meet on Nov. 4 to discuss the coming 14th Aboitiz Cup at the Aboitiz Sportsfield, Mandaue.

This years event will have three new categoriesthe  Players 6, mens Under-19 and Under-23.

The event will still feature the Players 8 and 10, the Boys 12 and 14 and the girls 12 and 17 categories.

Players 6 will feature kids in a 5 a-side division adopting the Fifa festival type grassroots program.  For this division, coaches have yet to decide whether there will be an assigned goal keeper or not.

Cebu Football Association (CFA) will be the first association to adapt the festival type format in a tournament and they expect the rest of the football associations to follow.

The mens under-19 and under 23 categories will be in preparation for the Smart under-19 championship and Suzuki under-23 championship next year.

The winning team will represent Cebu in the national competition against other teams in the country.

Those playing in the under-23 cant play in the mens open because of the conflict of schedule.

There will be no more mens 38 above division and womens open.

But for the womens open, organizers are considering to have as an alternative a womens futsal depending on the number of participants.

The Aboitiz Cup is tentatively scheduled on Nov. 12 but may be move a week later depending on the result of their meeting

PFF Consultant takes a look at Cebu football

(This report by Cheska Geli came out on Sun.Star Cebu on Oct. 28)
GERMAN football expert Eckhard Krautzun said he has learned a lot about Cebu football from the three- day coaches training he facilitated for Philippine Football Federation (PFF) at Sarrosa International Hotel.

The activity, which drew interest from coaches, parents, educators and players, included topics on youth coaching, training session and basic football tactics.

I learned the need of the province and what can be improved, said Krautzun.

Among the problems he noticed were the lack of fields, funds and equipment. He mentioned that clubs should get help from the government in constructing fields and artificial turfs.

Theres good football when theres a good field, he added.

Krautzun will be in the country until the end of November to supervise the different grassroots programs of football associations around the country. His next visit will be in Davao, where hell conduct the same seminar.

He will be expected to present his final assessment to PFF after his last stop in Manila. He will then fly to back to Germany to file a report regarding his observation to the National Olympic Committee of Germany and Office of Foreign Affairs.

The German Football Association will decide on what kind of support it will give the country based on Krautzuns report.
Germany had long been supporting the county in football development when they sent coaches to train locals and support programs.

Krautzen will pay a short visit to Jakarta to be the technical consultant of the Southeast Asian Games competing team.

Krautzen, who was the former coach of the mens team that gave the country its best finish in the 1991 SEA Games, he said the team has a fair chance in their group but they need a lot of luck.

He said that between his time as head coach and now, the structure has already improved and the emergence of a national league, sponsors and public schools program has also helped the sport.

As he culminated yesterdays event with a lecture to members of the Little Azkals, he reminded them  to work on improvisation and creativity in the field.

It will definitely help the team. We will add his inputs to our game plan with the addition of new drills to improve players decision-making, said Little Azkals head coach Oliver Colina.

He had also given pointers on match analysis and observation to attendees.
As a beginner kay daghan nakatun-an and we can use it to develop talents of children, said Marlyn Go, a pre-school teacher of Lawaan Elementary School.
