THE 6th Holcim Inter-High School Football League: Mayor Inday Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte Cup kicks off Saturday starting at 2 p.m. at the Tionko field.
Davao Football Association (DFA) general secretary Erwin Protacio, appearing in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said the tournament will have two divisions.
Playing days will be held every weekend until November with the first division composed of the traditionally strong teams while competing in the second division are the developing teams.
Entered in the first division are Ateneo, Emar, Holy Child School of Davao, University of Mindanao, Davao City National High School, Indonesian School and Malabog/Lasang teams.
In second division, competing are Ateneo Blue, Ateneo White, Emar, Catalunan Grande, Holy Cross of Calinan, University of the Immaculate Conception, Montserrat Camp School of Davao, Rogationist Academy, Mintal, Barangay 22-C and Southpoint School.
"The first division will be an 11-A-side event where teams will play the single round robin eliminations. The top two teams will play for the championship while the next two teams will battle for third," Protacio said.
Second division teams, meanwhile, will be grouped into two brackets where the top two teams in each group will advance to the cross-over semi-finals en-route to the championship.

Alabang football festival starts tomorrow
MANILA, Philippines - Close on the heels of the World Cup, the Alabang Country Club opens its doors to the first ACC Football Festival kicking off on Oct. 1 with close to 150 teams expected to see action in the two-day soccer showcase in Muntinlupa.
�We see the potential of Filipinos in the sport so this is the Alabang Country Club�s way of pitching in to develop soccer,� said acting ACC general manager and tournament chair Bones Floro, son of the late sportsman-businessman Danny Floro.
Located inside the plush Ayala Alabang Village, the ACC football grounds rank among the country�s most well-maintained pitches, making it an ideal venue for the soccerfest, Floro added.
While 100 teams have so far signed up, tournament director Cathy Rivilla said the event sponsored by Toyota, Yellow Cab, Brothers Burgers and Gatorade is still open to teams and clubs who want to join the 5-and-7-a-side competitions in various age groups.
The first day features games in the 5-a-side mixed boys and girls 6-U division, 7-a-side mixed 8-U and 10-U and 7-a-side boys� and girls� 12-U and 17-U.

A look at Towson

The Towson Tigers are 1-3 for the 2010 season. They have losses to Indiana, Villanova and Columbia. The Tiger's lone win was over 1-3 Coastal Carolina.
I was able to watch most of the Towson-Indiana game on the Big Ten Network. The Tigers stayed with Indiana into the second quarter where the score was 24-14. Indiana scored the next 30 points to pull away.
The star of that game for the Tigers was QB Chris Hart (6-4 220). Hart is a JUCO from Georgia Military College. Hart went 16-125 yard rushing with a 7.7 yards/carry ave. He also threw 16-35 165 for 288 total yards against a Big Ten team. Several times Hart got into the Indiana secondary and just out ran the Indiana DBs.
Hart has thrown six INTs and has a low 115.4 EFF rating.
Recently Citadel transfer QB Bart Blanchard has played more. Blanchard had six series against Columbia.
That's about all the good news for the Tigers offensively. The two leading Tiger running backs are Tremayne Dameron and Nygee Carmichael who have a 46.9 and 25.9 yards/game average respectively. Both backs together have only 288 rushing yards for the season. The longest run by either player this season is 12 yards.
The leading receivers are Hakeem Moore with 13-352 5 TD's 88 yards/game and Tom Ryan 9-60 2 TD's 30 yards/game.
The Tigers have averaged 20.2 points/game. In their three losses, Towson averaged only 11.2 points a game.
Defensively, Towson has given up 163 points for a 40.8 points/game average. The Tigers defense has allowed 200 yards/game rushing.
Towson's leading tackler is safety Jordan Dangerfield 21 UT 13 At 34 TT 1.5-6 TFL. After Dangerfield, it's defense by committee as the tigers have five players with 20 or more tackles.

Worried about Army? Heck, yeah
Walking out of the Penn State game on Saturday, someone wearing Penn State blue told me not to worry.
"Who do you have next week?" the man asked.
"Army, at Army," I said.
"You should spank them pretty good."
�I don�t think they can spank anyone right now,� I said. �I don�t think they�ve found the paddle.�
Mixing metaphors, I really don�t think they�ve found the trigger to their offense.
They have all kinds of weapons and plenty of gunpowder, but I question whether they have the right guy to light the fuse.
Tom Leonard had a great line earlier this week, tossing in another metaphor.
�He�s got a gun for an arm but he has no scope.�
Everyone said I should not judge Chester Stewart on the basis of the Penn State game because the Lions are too good.
Fair enough, but the four-game body of work is not all-that-impressive, either.
Sure, there was the game-winning drive against Villanova and the 62-yard touchdown pass to Michael Campbell.
Those were two drives out of 28 Temple drives that night.
Where was Chester the other 26?
That�s a fair question. To say he disappeared would not be an unfair answer.
Thirteen points against a Central Michigan team that Northwestern put up 30 on is not all that impressive, either.
UConn?
The Owls were down, 16-14, when Adrian Robinson stole the game.
They added to that total behind Delano Green and Bernard Pierce, not Chester Stewart.
I didn�t see very many big plays from Chester in that game, either.
Against Penn State, I saw a true freshman quarterback play like a redshirt junior and a redshirt junior play like a true freshman. A program-defining win theirs for the taking and only a 46-yard, three-interception performance prevented them from taking it.
Forgive me for not enjoying that.
So do I expect Chester to break out against Army and throw for 300 and three touchdowns?
That�s neither fair nor realistic.
I would not be surprised to see the Owls to be impotent on offense once again, especially if The Franchise (see crutches above) doesn�t take the field. Although Army's 24-0 win over North Texas doesn't look all that impressive on paper, North Texas won at Florida International (the same FIU that took Rutgers down to the wire) and North Texas lost excruiatiingly close games to in-state rivals Texas A&M and Rice. Army led at Duke, 35-7, before winning that one, 35-21. Before you dismiss Duke, the Blue Devils scored 48 points on Wake Forest. This Army team can score and ballhawk.
If the game is low scoring, this is a game Army can win. If Temple can only put up 13 against Central Michigan, will it put up a lot more than 13 at Army?
I doubt it.

RP Ready for Asean Football Tilt

This was the message the officials and the players of the Philippine national football team want to deliver when they see action in the Suzuki Cup Asean Football Championship Qualifiers starting October 22 in Vientiane, Laos.
�We have a team that is ready to redeem Philippine football,� said team manager Dan Palami in Tuesday�s PSA Forum at the Shakey�s U.N. Avenue in Manila.
Beefed up by at least six foreign-based players with Filipino roots, the national team is confident of it can pull off big wins in the tourney where they will meet Timor Leste, Laos and Cambodia.
The top two teams from the qualifying event will move into the main tournament in Vietnam and Indonesia.
The top team in the qualifier will join Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, while the runner-up will be grouped with Vietnam, Singapore and Myanmar.
�We�re not just there to participate but to win,� said Simon McMenemy, the new English coach of the national squad, who has served in various capacities in top clubs in England.
�The preparations have been superb the past 10 months. We have evolved as a team. The players who are fit, willing to play for each other, fight for each other and assist each other.�

The Dynamic booters of Ricky Yanson beat Minuluan Talisay F.C. squad of Ruben Clavecillas, 4-0, as Ali Rojas Go scored two goals in the 14th minute and sealed the game in the 41st, while teammates Dave Javellana and Ricardo Garcia scored in between.
Dynamic, the 2nd Conference winner won its opening match with a 5-3 victory over 1st Conference champion Tri-Maxi Agro Team mentored by Eric Gallaga.

Transport drew its initial match with Minuluan Talisay in the first round at 1-1.

Homeless World Cup - RP beats Norway in Host Cup Finals
MEMBERS of the Homeless World Cup Team Philippines will arrive in Manila on Thursday, September 30, with rejoicing hearts after defeating Norway, 4-3, winning the Host Cup Finals during the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janero, Brazil.
The RP squad had the first shot at the goal but Norway had a better look by scoring a 1-0 lead. That was first time in the nationals' last seven games not to open the scoring.
Norway controlled the game's momentum with its hard charging physical play, taking advantage of their size and strength which downed RP's leading scorer and defender Hammid Pasion with a serious ankle injury.
Pasion's injury has seriously affected the nationals rotation however has proven that they are a team as teammates Leopoldo Aragon, Abdula Pasion, and Toni Mark Arenal scored consecutive goals to give the country a 3-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Bacole�o Aragon anchored the team's effort to control the game as Norway scored on a penalty. But Aragon sealed the victory for RP squad's victory with a brilliant move and strike in the left corner of the net.
Team Philippines finished with 9-3 clip and settled 25th place over-all of the 64 teams, improving the team's world ranking from last year's 39th place.

Penn State 31, Temple 30: The Video
No, that headline is not a typo and I know Temple lost to Penn State, 22-13, not, 31-30, on Saturday.
I came across this terrific video the other day while preparing for the Penn State vs. Temple game.
I looked at it again tonight.
It's from the 1976 Temple vs. Penn State game, a 31-30 final with the bad guys, as usual, on top.
Temple coach Wayne Hardin went for two to win it (there was no overtime in those days) and the ball agonizingly went off the Temple player's fingertips.
One of the things that struck me about it was how well Terry Gregory passed in that game and how well-conceived the offensive game plan was.
That was 1976, but the way Temple passed the ball in the 2010 game, you'd think we were back in the single wing days now and not then.
Terry Gregory was not even the 10th-best Wayne Hardin quarterback in my humble opinion but Hardin could recognize good quarterbacks when he saw them. Steve Joachim, Marty Ginestra, Frank DiMaggio, Tim Riordan, Lee Saltz, Brian Broomell, etc., all were better quarterbacks than Gregory. Why was Temple able to get those guys then and not now?
Call it what you will but Al Golden has struggled with identifying good quarterbacks or at least putting good ones on the field. He lucked into his best QB, Adam DiMichele, when Alex DiMichele was recruited as a fullback by former coach Bobby Wallace.
Since then, the Temple quarterback play as been spotty at best and that's probably a generous characterization of it.
I think it's pretty obvious the 1976 Penn State team was better than the 2010 Lions, so Gregory lighting them up for 300 plus yards was impressive.

RP soccer team in search of air fare for tourney
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines �Members of the Special Olympics national soccer team from this city have what their trainers say is a strong potential to bring glory to the Philippines when they compete with other teams from 18 Asian countries next month.
But with barely a month to go before the Oct. 26-31 Special Olympics soccer tournament in Dili, Timor Leste, parents and trainers of the team are in a frantic search for the P610,000 air fare and allowances for its eight members, two coaches and a national head of delegation.
�We solicited [money] from various government agencies and private organizations but we were able to raise only P7,400 so far,� Marie Palaruan, a parent helping solicit funds for the team, told the Inquirer.
She said Easter College gave them P5,000 while Mayor Mauricio Domogan gave P1,500. At least P900 was pooled from various donors.
�We are now banking on Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to help [pay for] the team�s air fare to Dili and other expenses,� said Palaruan.

Cebu Football - DBTC booters notch 3rd win in Cesafi football
DEFENDING champion Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) posted its third win in the 10th CESAFI High School Football Championship yesterday at the University of San Carlos � Technological Center (USC-TC) in barangay Talamban, Cebu City.
DBTC scattered 10 goals and conceded only one to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) for its third win in the tournament. The Panthers ended the elimination round with six points after winning two games and losing two.
The tournament's top goal scorer Miguel Caindec started the rout for DBTC with a goal in the 9th and 27th minute of the match. Two other Bosconians found the back of the net twice. They were Joseph Mercado (18th, 20th), and Robert Gealon (30th, 47th). Other scorers for DBTC were Christian Agot, Christian Noel, Nonito Salazar Jr. and Junjay Arizabal.
Jenarolo Dondoyano scored the lone goal for USPF.
In the second game, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) blanked the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), 6-0, to take over the second spot in the standings.
COLLEGIATE DIVISION
Meanwhile, the University of the Visayas (UV) faces a lofty assignment in its bid to enter the semifinals in the college division at the USC-TC in Talamban.
Not only will it have to win its last game in the elimination round against USJ-R, UV would also have to hope that the University of Cebu (UC) will lose its final two elimination games.
Should this happen, UV would take over the no. 4 position and advance to the semifinals.
UV is currently lanquishing at the bottom rung with a point while UC is at no. 4 with three points.

Cebu Football - ANS survives Springdale
BOYS 17 defending champions Abellana National School (ANS) Pomeroy escaped a tough challenge put up by Springdale for a 3-2 victory yesterday in the 13th Aboitiz Football Cup at the Aboitiz Sportsfield at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City.
Springdale, which retained five of its players who saw action in the Palarong Pambansa in Tarlac and one RP U14 member who saw action in Malaysia last June, is becoming ANS Pomeroy's archrival in the game.
It was Springdale who thwarted ANS in last year's Cebu City Olympics and went on to represent the city in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet and Central Visayas in the Palaro, a role often played by the ANS.
Springdale, though, lambasted ANS in other divisions with a 4-1 win in the Boys 12 and 7-0 rout in the Boys 14.
In the second game of the Boys 17, Cebu International School (CIS) posted its second win in the tournament, this time at the expense of Blessed John, 6-1.
HUGE ROUT
The surprise of the day came from the Boys 12 division wherein the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) 1 inflicted a 23-0 onslaught of the Subangdaku Football Club (SFC).
DBTC 1 had waxed hot in the first half with 10 goals then went on to frustrate SFC with 13 more goals in the second half.
The other match saw DBTC 2 blanking NGLIS 7-0.
In the Boys 14, CIS scored a 3-1 win over Blessed John, while MTI brushed off the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 2-0.

The match started at a high tempo, with both keepers tested in the early stages.
Norway then took the lead through a powerful strike from Lund into the bottom corner.
Both sides battled hard to retain possession, and Philippines' woes were increased when star striker Pasion suffered an injury following a robust challenge.
They didn't let this phase them however, and were back on level terms soon after when Aragon outwitted the Norwegian defender with a faked shot before burying the ball in the corner.
Philippines then introduced a second Pasion who had an immediate impact with two goals in a matter of minutes, the first a lovely placed finish past the Norwegian goalkeeper.
The Philippines missed the chance to extend their lead when Aragon blasted a penalty wide and the half-time score remained 3-1.
Norway came out after the break with renewed energy and signalled their intentions with a goal from Hansen straight after kick off.
They now began to boss the game and Pedersen's dancing feet started to open up the Philippines defence. A well worked goal levelled the score at 3-3, and it seemed as if the Scandinavians would go on to take the lead.
The Philippines were undeterred however, and snatched victory right at the death when a long ball was chased down by Maravilla who rifled a shot underneath the goalkeeper.

William & Mary threw a TD with 20 seconds remaining to beat Maine and run their schedule to 3-1.
Holy Cross fell to 1-3 as they lost to Georgetown 17-7. The Crusader offense has fallen off a cliff this year. Against UMass, Harvard and Georgetown, Holy Cross has scored a total of 20 points.
Michigan smoked Bowling Green 65-21. The Wolverines rang up 721 yards of offense. Denard Robinson banged up his knee. Michigan goes to 4-0.

Forty-six yards passing doesn't cut it

1) Forty-six yards through the air ain't cutting it. I don't know if it's Matt Rhule's fault or Al Golden's fault or Chester Stewart's fault, but 46 yards through the air ain't cutting it and it's got to be fixed. After the Navy game last year, I mused out loud if Al Golden had the err, intestinal fortitude, to make a quarterback change. It turned out he did and I applauded him for it. How many coaches have the stones to remove a quarterback who has won six straight games for underperforming? It turned out Al Golden did. Vaughn Charlton's numbers against Navy last year were 5 for 17, 36 yards, two INTs. Chester Stewart's numbers against Penn State on Saturday mirrored those, except he threw one more INT. I'm sure Chester is a nice kid, just like Vaughn is but now, like then, I think it's time for a quarterback change. If Mike Gerardi or Chris Coyer can't get me 200 yards in the air against Army, we've got to rethink our quarterback recruiting. But I think either one of them gets two bills against Army. Chester Stewart is a one bill quarterback, if that. You just can't win over the long haul in major college football these days without a viable passing attack and Temple did not display a viable passing attack in any of the first four games.

2) Temple is just not any better than an above-average team without The Franchise in there. When TF (or BP) is in there, Owls are a great team. Without him, Owls struggle and I mean struggle to win the MAC (and probably fall short). Keep our fingers crossed that BP returns next week or the week after. Matt Brown is a great third-down back, but he's not a feature back. It's no coincidence that, with St. Bernard/The Franchise/Bernie's MAC Show in there, Temple had a lead. When he left, it all went to the crapper. That's pretty much the way the season has played out so far.
3) Unless a miracle happens, the best-case-scenario for Temple fans is two straight trips to Detroit, one for the MAC title and one for the bowl sponsored by a Pizza company. I only have one word for that. Ugh. I will make one but not both trips. I just have to figure out which one. Probably the MAC title tilt, since I want to see the Owls prance around Ford Field with the MAC trophy secured. I'm sure the walk from the parking lot to the indoor stadium will be too cold for at least one Temple fan to make either trip.

The Big South video worked, but it was like watching the game through an aquarium. To me, UMass looked flat out tired from the long trip to the midwest. UMass got better as the night went on and the defense pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter.

Mindanao booter happy with RP national team
MINDANAO's lone booter in the Philippine men's national football team, Peter Jaugan, is contented and happy with the way his career is going.
Jaugan, 27, was born in North Cotabato but he finished his college education at the University of Mindanao (UM) in 2004 with a degree in Commerce Major in Management.
He became a national team member sometime in 2002.
"I'm happy to be a national athlete. This is very fulfilling for me to be able to play for our country," Jaugan said in the vernacular in an interview before the team, which conducted a 10-day training camp in Davao City, left for Manila on Thursday afternoon.
He also said that he thinks highly of his teammates and their new British coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy.
He added, "I am very happy that the team has a new coach whose tactics may be simple but he is very thorough on the basics. That's really helping us a lot. He carries the team to a higher level of commitment and morale. We are confident to finish strong in our upcoming tournaments."
He said half-bred and Filipino players are jelling well together lately.
Jaugan, however, was injured in one of the friendly matches they played with local teams. But he said he will heal soon enough and that there's no cause for worry.
The team is back in Manila and will stay there for a few days before flying to Taiwan to play a series of exhibition games in preparation for the AFF Qualifiers set in Vientiane, Laos next month.

RP booters inspire Davao kids in visit
LOCAL football got a major boost with the arrival of the entire Philippine men's football team and its coaching staff in Davao City for a 10-day training session that was highlighted by entertaining matches, dramatic events and an admirable gesture that inspired football players and the sport's enthusiasts no end, especially the young booters in this part of the land.
And since it's not every day that a Philippine team, in any sport for that matter, holds camp in Davao, the Davao Football Association (DFA), young players and their parents grabbed the golden opportunity by playing a great host and mingling with the squad members mentored by British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy and led by the Filipino-British Younghusband brothers -- James and Phil.
What a wonderful week for Davao football as the national players displayed their skills right before the eyes of the local fans, conducted clinics for the youngsters and visited schools that had the pupils screaming at the top of their voices just at the mere sight of the players, most specially the Younghusband brothers.
The players obliged for autographs and had their photos taken with the kids and their parents, who inched their way just to get near them and whenever they had the chance all throughout the nationals' stay in Davao.
The DFA, led by its president Rafael "Pops" Vilela, helped arrange the three friendly matches played by the RP booters and it was indeed interesting to watch them play against the local players.
The RP squad won all of them, but it has to endure the tough challenge mounted by the University of Mindanao, Hooligans FC and local club champion Medvil FC. But more than the games, the camaraderie and friendship between the competing teams flourished in the end.
Just after taking a brunch at Bai Lim's Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge, McMeneny was asked on the team's status after the drill in Davao and was quick with his reply.
"It's been great. The players have become very responsible and the team very conpetitive in the past three friendly games," McMenemy said.
That was a few hours before the players check out at Casa Letesia where they had been staying and head to the Davao International Airport to catch an afternoon flight back to Manila.
But McMenemy and his players attested that what made their stay in Davao even more wonderful was because of the hospitality extended by the people.
"The friendliness of the people of Davao really helped the team. There's been fantastic reception wherever we go. It was heartwarming," McMenemy said.
The Davao stopover had to end and the RP players had to break camp as it embarks on more practice sessions in Manila and Taiwan for a big competition in Laos.
They may have left, but their wisdom will forever remain in the hearts and minds of the young Davao players who are headed for their own battle as they grow up.

RP booters inspire Davao kids in visit
LOCAL football got a major boost with the arrival of the entire Philippine men's football team and its coaching staff in Davao City for a 10-day training session that was highlighted by entertaining matches, dramatic events and an admirable gesture that inspired football players and the sport's enthusiasts no end, especially the young booters in this part of the land.
And since it's not every day that a Philippine team, in any sport for that matter, holds camp in Davao, the Davao Football Association (DFA), young players and their parents grabbed the golden opportunity by playing a great host and mingling with the squad members mentored by British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy and led by the Filipino-British Younghusband brothers -- James and Phil.
What a wonderful week for Davao football as the national players displayed their skills right before the eyes of the local fans, conducted clinics for the youngsters and visited schools that had the pupils screaming at the top of their voices just at the mere sight of the players, most specially the Younghusband brothers.
The players obliged for autographs and had their photos taken with the kids and their parents, who inched their way just to get near them and whenever they had the chance all throughout the nationals' stay in Davao.
The DFA, led by its president Rafael "Pops" Vilela, helped arrange the three friendly matches played by the RP booters and it was indeed interesting to watch them play against the local players.
The RP squad won all of them, but it has to endure the tough challenge mounted by the University of Mindanao, Hooligans FC and local club champion Medvil FC. But more than the games, the camaraderie and friendship between the competing teams flourished in the end.
Just after taking a brunch at Bai Lim's Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge, McMeneny was asked on the team's status after the drill in Davao and was quick with his reply.
"It's been great. The players have become very responsible and the team very conpetitive in the past three friendly games," McMenemy said.
That was a few hours before the players check out at Casa Letesia where they had been staying and head to the Davao International Airport to catch an afternoon flight back to Manila.
But McMenemy and his players attested that what made their stay in Davao even more wonderful was because of the hospitality extended by the people.
"The friendliness of the people of Davao really helped the team. There's been fantastic reception wherever we go. It was heartwarming," McMenemy said.
The Davao stopover had to end and the RP players had to break camp as it embarks on more practice sessions in Manila and Taiwan for a big competition in Laos.

Peace One Day on Sunday
The whole day event will be composed of a small football clinic, a demo game between Philippine Air Force Football team and the Philippine Army Football Team, and a small football tournament. The participants of this event are children from Gawad Kalinga and Jesus Loves Little Children and other participants from international organizations. This will be held at the AFP-ASCOM Field in Fort Bonifacio, from 7:00 am � 6:00pm. (Sep 26)

The match was played in Makati.
Philippines lost also the first match against Myanmar and finished last in group.

THE Philippine men's football team left for Manila Friday afternoon more united, so inspired and rich in wonderful experience after holding a brief 10-day training camp in Davao City.
The team's newly-acquired British coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy said his players had really changed a lot and he was just happy to have them practiced in Davao.
"It's been great. The players have become very responsible and the team had been very competitive in the past three friendly games we played against the local teams here," Mcmenemy said in an interview at the Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge Friday morning.
Aside from having a great training, McMenemy said the team had appreciated the warm welcome extended by the people, especially the football-playing children and their parents and friends.
"The friendliness of the people of Davao really helped the teams. There's been a fantastic reception wherever we go. Seeing a lot of children who welcomed us at Sakya Philippine Academy yesterday was very heartwarming. It was really a very good memory. With many enthusiasts and players here, football can really be very popular in this city," McMenemy said.
Filipino-British player James Joseph Younghusband echoed his coach, saying the Davao camp went very well.
"We're more bonded now. While before we just meet three to four times a week to train, spending 10 days with my teammates here helped us to know each other better. It's also amazing to see a lot of kids enthusiastic about football. I'm looking forward to come back," Yonghusband said.
His brother Philip James added, "It's been a good preparation we had here for our future international meet. We have become more united now as a team."
Philip also said the friendly matches also helped them in their preparations.
"I really didn't expect that the Davao teams we played here the past days were very competitive. I thought we would win against them with huge score difference but I was proven wrong. The Davao players are tough and they really work so hard, showing the real strength of the Filipinos," Philip Younghusband said.
"Davao has a lot of football enthusiasts including school kids. I think even my short times with them are my most memorable experience," he added.
Assistant coach Edwin Cabalida said he's happy that half-bred and Filipino players jelled together in an out of the field.
"We have been overwhelmed by the warm reception here as well. I've never been to a city where the national team would be mobbed for autographs and photo opportunities. We just experienced it here in Davao. Football is really popular here as it had been in Iloilo in the past," Cabalida said.
Team co-captain Emelio "Chipi" Caligdong said their games went well. "It was only the last game with Medvil though that we really played more intensely. Our experience here is a good preparation for our upcoming competition," he said.
"I've got to taste durian for the first time and I love it. It's so delicious. Tasting durian was my most memorable experience in Davao," Caligdong added.
Dipolog natives Jerry Barbaso and Michael Aubrey Atienza along with Iligan-born Kristopher John Relucio cited their zip line experience at Outland Adventure as unforgettable.
"It was our first zip line experience. It was so scary but we managed to cross and it was very fulfilling. In the hotel that we stayed, we were paired with half-bred Filipinos so we were able to bond more. It's been a great team building we have here in Davao," Barbaso said.
The team, managed by Dan Stephen Palami, is staying for five days in Manila before going to Taiwan for a series of friendly competitions. The nationals are preparing for their stint in the AFF Suzuki Cup Qualifiers in Vientiane, Laos on October 22 to 27.

Players get warm welcome in Ateneo visit
WILD cheers greeted the Philippine men's national football team during a short visit at the Ateneo de Davao University (Addu) Matina campus Friday morning.
The RP players and the coaching staff were welcomed by some students upon entering the campus, while hundreds more were waiting for them at the school's sports complex.
It even took a few minutes to get the eager crowd seated as most of them joined the team at the stage asking for autographs and photo souvenirs.
When the students were seated, head coach Simon Alexander Mcmenemy was given the chance to talk.
Mcmenemy acknowledged the students, who were seated in groups and identified by the different colors of their shirts. The children waved their hands in response to his greetings.
McMenemy then asked who among the students play football. When only a few raised their hands, he encouraged them, "Play football. It's a great sport to learn especially for Filipinos."
He also asked who play basketball and addressed those who raised their hands to try football as well. He called one student who doesn't play football to join him on the stage and asked him why he doesn't play.
The student said he doesn't know the sport but Coach Mcmenemy encouraged him to learn football.
Philip James Younghusband, the most popular to the kids among his other teammates, also inspired the students to play football.
"Play football. It's a great game!" Younghusband said.
After the short messages, the team signed autographs and obliged themselves for pictorial. Ateneo teachers and non-teaching staff also had their pictures taken with the team.

Homeless World Cup - Philippines beat Norway !
The Philippines raced into an early 2-0 lead thanks to some great buold up that split the Norwegian defence apart but it did not take long for the Norwegians to muscle their way back into the game with an expertly taken goal by Lund. The game ebbed and flowed for the rest of the half with the Philipino players providing a masterclass in ball retention. The Norwegians were more direct on the ball and continued to move the play with a rushed tempo. This perhaps lead to them tiring under the sun and the Philipines exploited this with a second half attack that led to what ended up being the winner. Pasion continued his fine form in the tournament to slip the ball past Norway's strong keeper. The Scandinavians pulled one back but a two goal deficit meant that there was norway back and it was crowd favourites Phillipines who took the points.

I have a little different take on the play: note the blue line of scrimmage. By the time Jonathan gets to the line of scrimmage, (12:20 game clock image above) Emil Igwenagu, Andrew Kervis and Stephane Milhim have pushed the Michigan defenders three yards back. Jonathan does a quick shake which freezes the Wolverines outside contain and then runs down hill three yards in the crease. Great blocking and heady running leads to a six yard gain. The Minutemen did that all game long as Hernandez averaged 4.4 yards/carry and Griffin had 5.6 yards/carry.

Cebu Football - UV fights for survival in Cesafi football
FORMER champion University of the Visayas (UV) will fight for its survival when it takes on defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate football at the University of san Carlos (USC)-Technological Center field.
UV, which won the title in 2005, sits at the bottom of the standings with one point after drawing USC, 2-2, last Sept. 12.
The University of Southern Philipines Foundation (USPF), which got routed in its first game against USC last Sept. 5, is now the surprise leader with six points.
After losing its first game, USPF beat USJ-R and the University of Cebu (UC).
USC is second with four points, while USJ-R and UC both have three points but USJ-R is third on goal difference.
With only one point in three matches, UV has to win against USJ-R to make the final four and overtake UC in the standings.
The game against USJ-R is UV�s final assignment in the elimination round, while the four other teams will have another game on Oct. 3, giving them more chance to move up
the ranking.
On Oct. 3, UC will take on USPF, while USJ-R will face USC.
If UV loses this Sunday, it will be eliminated and the two Oct. 3 games will only be for positioning for the semifinal round.
The No. 1 team will take on the No. 4, while the No. 3 and No. 4 will suqare off.

The University of Southern Philipines Foundation (USPF), which got routed in its first game against USC last Sept. 5, is now the surprise leader with six points.
After losing its first game, USPF beat USJ-R and the University of Cebu (UC).
USC is second with four points, while USJ-R and UC both have three points but USJ-R is third on goal difference.
With only one point in three matches, UV has to win against USJ-R to make the final four and overtake UC in the standings.
The game against USJ-R is UV�s final assignment in the elimination round, while the four other teams will have another game on Oct. 3, giving them more chance to move up
the ranking.
On Oct. 3, UC will take on USPF, while USJ-R will face USC.
If UV loses this Sunday, it will be eliminated and the two Oct. 3 games will only be for positioning for the semifinal round.
The No. 1 team will take on the No. 4, while the No. 3 and No. 4 will suqare off.

With further adieu or even Freddy Adu, we'll get right to the answeres:
1) What would you say is the biggest story line in the MAC so far this season? Surprises, injuries, etc?
The biggest story line has been the first win over a BCS program in awhile (UConn) for the league. Last year, Central Michigan did it at Michigan State. I really feel we're going to get a couple big wins this weekend.
2) Which other team in college football most closely mirrors your respective MAC school (whether it be personnel / talent, coaching, reputation, injuries, etc.) ?
Penn State. Great running backs (Pierce/Royster), developing quarterack (Stewart, Bolden), solid defense.
3) If you had to select one player from any other MAC team to add to your roster -- which player would you choose and why ?
Garrett Barnas from Northern Illinois. I would have loved to seen this JUCO first-team All-American get one shot (just one) at quarterback. He might also start for Temple at free safety if that didn't work out.
4) What have the first three games of this season showed you about your team ?
They can win the close ones without their best player on the field for most of the time. It also showed that the starting quarterback is steadily improving, but is not significantly better than he was last season.
5) Rank the MAC Teams: 1 to 13.

RP winds up Davao training
THE Philippine men's football team got another stiff challenge from a local champion club in its final friendly match, but will depart for Manila today full of sweet memories from its brief stay in Davao City.
The RP squad completed its 10-day training camp in the City of Durian with a 5-1 victory over Medvil FC, needing excellent performances from captain Ali Borromeo and James Younghusband to pull through in the end after a tight first half.
Borromeo scored on a penalty kick as the Filipino booters held a 1-0 lead at the half, then scored again in the second half from short range to make it 2-0.
Younghusband, Emelio "Chipi" Caligdong and Nestorio Margarse added a goal each to complete the scoring parade for the RP team.
Allan Ray Fernandez averted a shutout when he scored on a spot kick just before the game ended to the cheers of the spectators, who braved the scorching heat of the sun just to see the nationals and their local stars play Wednesday afternoon at the Tionko field.
On Thursday, RP British coach Simon Alexander McMenemy and some members of the team appeared during ABC-CBN Davao's morning show "Maayong Buntag Mindanao and conducted a clinic for the coaches as part of their final-day activities before closing camp.
The team also took lunch at the Stadium Buffet Restaurant and Sports Lounge owned by avid football supporter Bai Lim and was scheduled to visit the Lon Wa Buddhist Temple and the Philippine Academy of Sakya along Cabaguio Avenue Thursday afternoon.
"I love Davao and I definitely want to go back here," said the 24-year-old James Younghusband, one of the two Filipino-British booters in the RP team. The other one is Philip, 23, who plays the midfield.
Philip missed the last match after hurting his right ankle in the team's second friendly match against the Hooligans FC.
McMenemy said they liked it in Davao and his players got what they came for and that is to have a taste of Davao football.
McMeneny was impressed with his boys's performance in the three matches that they played here, although he admitted in a recent sports forum that they need to improve on their defense.
"On defense I think we have to to be a little bit tighter," McMenemy said.
The RP booters scored a total of 20 goals in three matches while conceding only three, two on penalty kicks and one during a breakaway. The national squad earlier beat University of Mindanao, 6-0, and Hooligans, 9-2.
The team will stay for six days in Manila before flying to Taiwan for another series of friendly competitions there.
Mcmeney is hoping that his team should be well-prepared in time for the AFF Suzuki Cup qualifiers set from Oct. 22 to 27 in Laos.

UFL Looks Forward to Exciting Times Ahead

It�s only three weeks until the United Football League gets underway once again, with the LBC-UFL Cup kicking things off on October 16. The Football Alliance held a general meeting on Wednesday, where there was plenty of exciting news revealed to the 19 clubs that were present.
With the goal of giving football more exposure in the country, the FA was very pleased to reveal that there will be a weekly 30-minute football program airing on Balls TV � a sports channel on Sky Cable. The UFL will be featured regularly on the show, making it much easier for football enthusiasts to get a glimpse of just how intense and entertaining the competition is.
It was also announced that the First Division clubs will be receiving much higher allowances this season, signs that the league is successfully moving towards making football a legitimate professional sport in the country. The new revelation should be exciting news for all those eager for the beautiful game to develop in the nation, as more funding will certainly lead to better quality on the field. While it is the First Division that will be reaping the benefits of a bigger budget next season, the Second Division will surely become more competitive, as the incentive of bigger finances starts to play a role in their motivation for promotion.
The groups for the LBC-UFL Cup were also finalized on the night, throwing up some interesting matchups between both First and Second Division clubs. Group D looks to be the one that�s going to generate the most attention, as top tier clubs Union, Loyola and newly promoted Global are all bunched together.

MANILA, Philippines �The Philippine team put on a courageous fight but still suffered a stinging 1-4 defeat to the more experienced and composed Myanmar squad in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Women�s Championship Group A Qualifiers (Round 1) Wednesday at the University of Makati football field.
The Nationals yielded only one goal in the first half but the physically stronger and technically better Myanmar squad intensified its attack in the second half to score four more goals and complete its domination over the RP squad.
So tough were Myanmar players that three RP girls were carried out on stretcher due to their aggressive plays in the event organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
�My players gave their best but we certainly lack match exposure and that showed,� said coach Alfredo Estacion.
With the loss, the Nationals need a huge win over the taller and heftier Uzbekistan squad in today�s 3 p.m. showdown to have a fair chance of advancing to the second round.

I have a Picasa web album from the Michigan game here. Michigan has dire warnings about what you can take into their stadium. "Small cameras" only are allowed. I ended up taking my SLR with a short 18-200mm (28-320 effective focal length) lens. We were up in the the nose bleed seats (row 87), so my longer zoom would have been much better for photography. It turns out the ticket taker never even glanced at my camera. FWIW, check out the album.
