MANILA, Philippines - Global FC turned back a fighting Air Force Phoenix team, 5-3, under the rains to boost its title chances in the First Division of the United Football League at the University of Makati field in Makati yesterday.
An own goal by Air Forces Martin Doctora on the 82nd followed by a boot by Sudanese Izzeldin Elhabbib just before injury time sealed the victory for the Global team.
Juani Guirado came through with a brace, one coming on the 36th minute and the other on the 52nd on a set-up by younger brother Angel. Both were members of the Azkals team that finished a historic third place in the AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal a week ago.
Misagh Bahadoran picked up a foiled attempt by Angel Guirado for a goal on the 44th minute, giving Global a 2-0 lead before another Azkal Ian Araneta struck with one a minute into injury time to cut Air Forces deficit to just a goal.
After the Juani goal that made it 3-1, the Airmen unleashed a mighty fightback as Yanti Barsales struck with one on the 64th before Araneta came through with his second goal of the match -- an indirect free kick -- on the 79th to tie the count at 3.
And then came Doctoras own goal.
The Airmen thus remained at sixth spot with seven points after absorbing their third setback against two wins and a draw, or a point behind Army Fritz & Macziol FC.
Over at the Turf in Bonifacio Global City, Forza FC leaned on Isaac Agyies game-winning goal as it topped a stubborn Dolphins United FC, 4-3, to jump into joint fifth in the Second Division alongside Laos FC with 12 points apiece.
