Global FC rallies past Guam in friendly

Global FC clawed back from a huge deficit to snatch a 5-3 victory over the Guam national men�s football team in a friendly match Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Matao looked poised to steamroll over the United Football League title contenders after grabbing a 2-1 lead at halftime. They came out roaring in the second half as Zachary Tomas Deville fired a goal in the 47th minute to widen their gap, 3-1.

But Ange Guisso sparked Global to a fiery rally after hitting a goal in the 50th minute. Azkal member Misagh Bahadoran then dished an assist to Carli De Murga in the 65th minute to tie the match at 3-all.

Izo Elhabbib completed the comeback after hitting the net in the 87th minute to finally give Global the lead. Mohammad Ghasemi also scored in the 92nd minute to seal the victory.

An interesting substitution happened in the middle of the match for Global, as De Murga took over the goalkeeping duties after Angel Guirado replaced goalkeeper Jerome Etoundi on the field.

Surprisingly, De Murga, who scored his first international goal with the Azkals against Guam last Tuesday, played excellent as a goalkeeper, keeping a clean sheet for his stint.

Guam is in the country for their week-long training camp in preparation for the East Asian Football Championships in July. They are coming off a 3-0 defeat against the Azkals Tuesday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Matao will also face Stallion Giligan�s FC on June 16 also at the Rizal Stadium.

Global rides Bahadoran strike to solo UFL lead

GLOBAL relied on Misagh Bahadoran�s second-half strike to pull off a narrow 1-0 victory over Green Archers United last night and regain top spot in the United Football League at the University of Makati field.

With Loyola Meralco and Kaya only securing a point after playing to a 2-2 draw Saturday, the door was left open for Global to move on top and Bahadoran made sure that the 2010 UFL Cup champion capitalized on the opportunity.

The Filipino international, a vital cog in the Azkals� run to third place in the AFC Challenge Cup last March, surged on the left before firing low from a tight angle to beat Green Archers keeper Patrick Deyto in the 59th minute.

The win boosted Global to 34 points, two clear of Loyola and Kaya, while Green Archers were stuck at nine points, just five ahead of doormat Navy Red Juice.

Earlier, Nomads Auction Manila barged into the Top 5 after a come-from-behind 4-1 win over Army Fritz and Macziol.

Nomads rallied with four second-half goals, pouncing on an side which was dealt a big blow when goalkeeper Ed Sacapano was sent off in the first half.

A brace from teenager Jeremy Theuer and goals from Steve Borril, Chris Phillimore boosted Nomads to only their fourth win of their inaugural campaign in the first division.

Nomads moved up to fifth with 16 points, while Army absorbed its fifth loss in six matches.

Green Archers were reduced to 10 men in the 48th minute after defender Reynaldo Villareal was sent off for a second yellow card.

But Deyto kept them in the match with a string of impressive saves on Patrick Reichelt and Bahadoran.

A DAY after a stunning win over undefeated Stallion Gilligan�s in the United Football League, Dan Palami and Global FC will have to deal with another surprise.

An even bigger one�the loss of their coach, the former Cebu-based Australian Graeme Mackinnon.

�I�ve resigned from Global,� Mackinnon simply said when he met with Sun.Star Cebu to talk about the matter.

Citing family concerns, the 65-year-old coach who took Global FC to the semifinals of the UFL Cup and to second place after six games in the league, said he�s told Palami about his plan weeks ago.

�I�ve lost the fire in me,� Mackinnon said. �Sendong really affected me. It really hit home with the fragility of things and I came to the realization that I have neglected my family for so long and it�s time to return to my family again. It�s time to go home and fall in love with my wife all over again.�

Mackinnon also played a role in organizing the match between the Azkals and CF Madrid, which raised funds for the victims of Typhoon Sendong.

Global FC was not the first coaching stint of Mackinnon and he also missed most of the childhood of his daughter when he was based in Cebu from the late 80s until 2003, when he returned to Australia.

�The difference between then and now is because of the technology. Back then we just wrote letters, now I get to see them every week online,� said Mackinnon, who added he wants to see more and take care of his granddaughter Isabelle. �I�m 65, you never know how many sunsets you�ll see.�

For his part, Palami said he is sorry to see the coach leave and was even hoping that he would change his mind. Mackinnon first told Palami of his plan before the team manager left with the Azkals for their training camp in Dubai.

�There�s too much respect between us that goes beyond football. I would always support him and I don�t want football to stand in the way of his being happy,� said Palami.

Palami said he was more than satisfied with how Mackinnon handled Global in his brief stint in the UFL.

�I give him an A plus. I�ve seen his dedication to the job, I�ve seen how he handles the player and that is talking from the point of view of an owner of the club, and not just a friend,� said Palami.

Mackinnon said he doesn�t have a written contract with Palami.

�My contract was �I will leave if I get sick of it or if he (Dan) gets sick of me.�

I�ve been really lucky twice in football. First with Michel (Lhuillier) and now with Dan. There�s more than the employer-employee relationship and it�s more like I�m part of the family,� said Mackinnon, who first met Dan during the Feb. 9 match between the Philippines and Mongolia.

Palami said he and his former coach will maintain their friendship and he has even invited Mackinnon and his wife Tessie to return to the Philippines for his brother�s wedding this summer.

Since Global will have a short break, Palami said he will use the time to find a coach that would �approximate what Graeme has done.�

Mackinnon said he hopes the senior players in the team like Yu Hoshide and team captain Badrelin Elhabbib will take over a bigger leadership role now that the team currently has no coach.

The Australian coach, who is set to leave for Brunei to represent Palami in the Bolkiah Cup, said he feels happy and lucky to be part of the recent football
renaissance in the country.

�Back then, we had more dogs than people in the stand. Now, there�s so much passion, crowd participation and involvement. I�m disappointed that it didn�t work out,� said Mackinnon, who admitted he never really got settled in Manila.

�Everything was done to make me settled in, it�s just that there are overriding family ties,� he said. �I�m happy for the experience.�

MANILA, Philippines�Defending champion Global FC summoned its old, ruthless form to blank Army, 3-0, Saturday night and reach the quarterfinals of the United Football League at the University of Makati pitch.
Homeless World Cup veteran Janrick Soriano struck twice in the second half, after Izo El-Habbib opened the scoring for Global, which struggled in the group stage.
Global, which squeezed into the knockout stage as one of the two wild cards, will take on the winner between Pachanga and Navy for a place in the semifinals.
Stallion FC also booked its place in the last eight with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Diliman Victory Liner FC in the first game.
Lee Joo-young and Vince Braga scored for Stallions, who will take on either top seed Loyola Meralco Sparks or Sunken Garden United.
Young, one of five Koreans playing for Stallions, equalized in the 32nd minute, before the Iloilo-born Braga gave them the lead a minute into first-half injury time.
Army came into the game as the No. 2 seed. But they rammed into a rejuvenated Global side handled by Australian coach Graeme MacKinnon.
Global took the lead 20 minutes into the game when El-Habbib directed a long free kick from Yu Hoshide into the goal.
Jeff Christiaens made his debut for Global and the Fil-Belgian winger, who starred in the Southeast Asian Games, made an instant impact with his playmaking, setting up the second goal for Soriano in the 53rd minute.
Soriano grabbed his second in the 69th, chipping past Eduard Sacapano after a quick restart that caught the Army napping.
Fil-Spanish striker Angel Aldeguer, still nursing a stress fracture on his ankle, played the last 21 minutes and nearly scored with a header off a corner kick.

UFL opener: Stallions FC upsets Global XI

MANILA, Philippines�Stallions FC, more fluid in its attacking game early on, stunned defending champion Global FC, 3-2, at the start of the United Football League Cup Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Francis Gustilo and Jovanie Simpron put the all-Ilonggo side on top, 2-0, at halftime before Ruben Doctora appeared to have put the outcome beyond doubt with his 54th-minute strike.
But Global, galvanized by the entry of substitute Janrick Soriano, struck back in the 66th minute thanks to Remi Sery, before Izo El-Habbib made it close six minutes from time.
In the first UFL match aired live on national television, Global was denied of an equalizer in controversial fashion in second-half injury time when Japanese midfielder Yu Hoshide slid in to meet Soriano�s cross in front of goal only for the linesman to flag him offside.
Still, it was a remarkable result for Stallions, who came into the game as heavy underdogs after Global upgraded its lineup during the offseason with the acquisition of Hoshide and Angel Guirado.
The Fil-Spanish striker didn�t play because of an injured ankle he sustained in the Philippine Azkals� 0-2 loss to Singapore in an international friendly Friday night.
�It (the win) means a lot considering we are in the Group of Death,� said Stallions coach Ernie Nierras, whose team is also bracketed with powerhouse Pachanga and dangerous Queen City Cebu United.
Looking to avenge their 1-nil loss to Global in the quarterfinals last season, Stallions got off to a bright start with Gustilo finding the back of the net with a shot from near the halfline in the 10th minute.
Simpron broke through the Global defense in the 44th minute to double the lead, before Doctora added to Stallions� tally by following up his saved shot nine minutes into the second half.
Soriano�s introduction in the 60th minute sparked the Global attack and his menacing runs on the left flank created the opportunity for Sery to volley past Wilson Munoz.
El-Habbib headed home a cross from the right six minutes from time.
�We were still lucky because if they had 10 more minutes, they would have equalized,� said Nierras.

Mackinnon excited to be part of f�ball renaissance

NEWLY-HIRED Global FC coach Graeme Mackinnon is excited to return to the Philippines and resume a role in Philippine football, this time as head coach of one of the top clubs in the United Football League (UFL).


Mackinnon, who was hired by Dan Palami to take over Global FC, is expected to return next week to take charge of the team�s campaign when it defends its UFL CUp title.


�To start with, just to be part of the renaissance of Philippine football is exciting.


I only met Dan in February for the first time and yet I feel as though I have known him for the longest time. So it will be a pleasure to coach his team and an honor to be entrusted with coaching one of the top club teams in the Philippines,� Mackinnon said in a message to Sun.Star Cebu.


The Australian coach, who returned to Cebu last February to be enshrined in the Cebu Sports Hall of Fame for his M. Lhuillier football team�s achievement in the late� 80s, also watched the Azkals beat Mongolia in Panaad last Feb. 9 and the PHL vs. Kuwait match in Manila.


It was hours before the Kuwaiti match when Palami offered him the job.


�I don�t know anything about the players so we will get to know each other slowly and hopefully we can make the necessary adjustments to some parts of their game (that) I believe need some attention,� said Mackinnon, who also helped groom the Carmen National School to the top of Philippine age group football.


Mackinnon, who just had knee surgery, will miss the Oct. 8 Global FC vs. Stallions match in the opening of the UFL Cup and will have his coaching debut on Oct. 16.


�Unfortunately I will miss the first game due to my still being here under doctor�s orders regarding the knee operation. I have an appointment on Oct. 7 so I should arrive in Manila sometime during the next week,� he said.


The Cebu team will be coached by his former star player and close friend Mario Ceniza, who will also have some of the former Carmen players in the team.

�Our long friendship will always be important to us both. So any time we are pitted against each other, we will do our best for our respective teams. Then we will go and enjoy a Coke and pizza as friends will always do whatever the result,� he said.

Graeme�s stirring return

FORMER Cebu-based football guru Graeme Mackinnon is back in Philippine football but his return may result in some mixed feelings for Cebu football fans.

The already intriguing match-up between Dan Palami�s Global FC and Cebu Queen City United in the UFL Cup just got a bit more intriguing after Palami confirmed that he hired Mackinnon as his head coach.


Global FC and Cebu Queen City United is in Group C together with Pachanga and the Iloilo Stallions.

�He is just waiting for the clearance from his doctor before he can fly over and take over the team,� Palami told Sun.Star Cebu.

Mackinnon, a Cebu Sports Hall of Fame inductee, will get his doctor�s clearance on Oct. 7, and is expected to have his first game as Global FC head coach against Cebu Queen City United on Oct 16.

Mackinnon just had a knee operation last month and is undergoing rehabilitation in Australia.

The former coach of M. Lhuillier and the Carmen National School left for his home country in 2003 to take care of his ailing mother but has returned to the country twice to watch the national team play against Mongolia in Bacolod and Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers in Manila.

�I made the offer to him when we met in Manila,� said Palami, who handled the coaching duties of Global in the recent I Can Serve Foundation friendly games.

And that prospect is already exciting coach Mario Ceniza, Mackinnon�s star player when he was head coach of M. Lhuillier Cebu, when they won the national men�s open title decades ago.

�We never expected this kind of situation,� Ceniza said yesterday. �I�m very happy for him that he�s back in football. We can be friends outside the field but not in the game.�

Like his old mentor, Ceniza will be making his UFL coaching debut this year and has been busy getting the Queen Cebu City team in shape.

�We are in complete control of the team, they are well-disciplined and there are no superstars,� he said.

Some of the players in the 25-man lineup for Queen City are former national team members Rocky Garciano and Jan Michael Flores and former Carmen boys Josaphat Sacil, Jack Reston, Junard Aguilar, Martin Bontia and Julius Acre.

Global will have goalkeeper Paolo Pascual, a former player of Ceniza, Misagh Bahadoran, Angel Aldeguer and the dangerous Izo El-Habbib.

�We are going to play another tuneup game but I�m hoping we can have more games,� Ceniza said. �Dira ra man gud nimo makit-an unsa ilang fitness level ug ilang abilidad.�

As to his former mentor and close friend, Ceniza said, �I�m very happy for him and I hope successful sad siya sa iyang bag-ong career.�

Raffy Musni, the team coordinator, also said the players will get a huge bonus if they beat Palami�s team on Oct. 16.

When he learned of the offer, Palami said, �My team will have to ensure that the Cebu players will not be disappointed. I prefer that they get their bonus from the other teams.�

Queen City will debut against Pachanga on Oct. 9 and will have its final game in the group stage against Iloilo on Oct. 22.

Nomads turn back Kaya, 1-0, for Kia Cup title

NOMADS Football Club leaned on the heroics of British striker Phil Connelly in the first half as they turned back Kaya FC, 1-0, to clinch the top honors in the men�s division of the first Kia Cup seven-a-side football championships.

Connelly, a customer service manager at a Makati-based call-center company, rolled in the winning marker off an assist by teammate Allistair McReady midway in the first 10 minutes of the game at the Alabang Country Club grounds in Muntinlupa.

The Michael Dennison-coached Nomads FC made it to the finals after sweeping their four-game assignments and then beating Forza FC in the semifinals, 4-3.

A total of 39 squads saw action in the men�s division of this one-day tournament supported by Kia Motors Philippines.

�This shows our commitment in the sport of football. We participate in sports because this is the direction, which Kia is taking,� said Kia Philippines marketing service manager Paterno Soriano.

Kaya FC barged into the men�s finals after prevailing over Global C, 4-3, in the semis. They reached the quarterfinals when they placed second in Group F.

University of the Philippines-A won by penalty shootout over La Salle-A, 3-2, to claim the women�s crown.

Tourism junior Clara Poblador scored the winning goal, which was blast from 10 meters, curving to the left corner of the goal post.

The Maroons reached the finals after they outplayed the Gilligans-Philippine Malditas, 1-0, off a penalty kick from Hope Sales.

La Salle-A stormed to the finals with a 3-1 triumph over University of Santo Tomas-A, behind the efforts of midfielder Pia Bravo and Malditas booter Sam Nierras. Peter Atencio

Global FC wins opener in benefit games, takes on Azkals next

MANILA, Philippines � Global Smartmatic scored a 1-nil victory against Kaya Cignal at the start of the I Can Serve Football Invitational Games today at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Sudanese Izzeldin El-habbib scored on an early goal to power the Global Smartmatic to the opening day win in the charity invitationals backed by LBC and Sun Life Insurance that served as a kick-off to Breast Cancer Awareness Month this coming October.

El-habbib, the top scorer in the last UFL season, eluded Kaya�s defense and took advantage with a long goal, four minutes into the match.

Kaya found an opening to equalize when Global�s goal keeper Paolo del Rosario was sent off after a hand ball outside the penalty box on Ivory Coast native Eric Dragoh�s attempt midway in the first half.

But Kaya, behind the efforts of Dagroh and Philippine Azkals� Nate Burkey and Jason Sabio, failed on several chances to equalize as Global hung tough with key defensive stops.

Global will challenge the Philippine Azkals on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the same venue. Kaya will take its turn against the national team on Saturday.

Breast Cancer survivor and actress Maritoni Fernandez kicked off the event as the guest of honor with ticket proceeds of the three-day invitationals going to I Can Serve Foundation, which helps spread awareness and fight breast cancer.

Tickets to the charity games, which are pegged at P300 (lower box), P150 (upper grandstand), P75 (center bleachers) and P50 (side bleachers), are available at Mizuno branches in Bonifacio High Street, Mall of Asia, Alabang Town Center and SM Megamall, select LBC branches and at the venue.
