Tiger booter chosen to join under-23 team

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas David Basa became the first homegrown talent to be chosen to join the national under-23 football squad seeing action in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November.

National coach Hans Michael Weiss told Basa that hes going to join the Jakarta-bound squad after practice last Thursday at the newly renovated pitch of the Rizal Memorial Track Football Stadium.

Basa will join Fil-Dutch midfielder Jason de Jong, who wanted to rejoin the Philippine Azkals after he was fired by Indonesian pro football club Persiba Balikpapan for a contract violation with the Superleague club in Jakarta, but was instead inserted into the 23-under national team.

The 22-year-old Basa, a defensive whiz, saw action for the Philippine Azkals national football team during the group stage of the 2013 Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers in Myanmar.

Weiss has yet to decide on the final composition of the Azkals, who will play Sri Lanka in their first home-and-away match for the World Cup qualifiers.

Weiss is in the midst of forming two teams, with the younger squad making up the national under-23 team to the SEA Games.

The German coach said hes having a difficult time choosing the players, who will suit up for the SEA Games in November. Weiss has set a modest goal of winning a bronze in the SEAG. Peter Atencio
