Persib's Souza Interest

Seen a couple of stories recently linking Brazilian striker Marcio Souza with Persib Bandung. Souza currently plays for Arema but is best known for spending several seasons with Persela before short stays with Deltras and Semen Padang.

Souza's talent is unquestioned but he does have a reputation for throwing himself spectacularly to the ground, face contorted in agony and pleading with the ref.

Him and Noh Alam Shah up front together? You can imagine every ref in the land saying puh-leeese no!

Breaking News: Palami hires new coach for Global

INQUIRER reporter Cedelf Tupas has been hired by Dan Palami to take over the coaching post of Global FC in the United Football League.

Di ko na kaya mag coach, Palami, who is undefeated so far since taking over the coaching job, told Fair Play in an exclusive interview at an exclusive bar. Si Cedelf na lang because he really knows his football and I think hindi naman sya mag titwitter kung may maiwan syang gamit.

Palami said that he needs to let go of the Global coaching stint because of too many concerns.

I am stretched too thin, and Im not getting thin! Palami said. In fact, Im gaining weight! This would allow me to finally get on with my weight-loss program.

Though he didnt mention it, a reliable source said a certain cosmetics company is planning to make Palami the face of their new line of products once he lose about 30 pounds.

I tell you, with Dan on board, we dont need Phil or James or kung sino pa yang mga gwapo na players.  And based on our research, Mr. Palami has more appeal than them.  And our boss really likes Dan. I think if she gets rid of that boy-toy doctor, my boss wants to date Dan, Beigh Noang Ni, a representative of the cosmetic company that is planning to get Palami, said.  "Bagay sila, V..D...parang Valentines Day."

Tupas, who has been covering the national team as a one-man press corps in 2006 before getting company after the Suzuki Cup, will take over the coaching job next week.

He is also the second scribe to head Global after Graeme Mackinnon, the Australian football guru who used to write for the Freeman.

Im very much honored by the appointment, Tupas told Fair Play after  throwing the phone in an interview.

Though Tupas didnt mention it, Fair Play learned from Avril Folle, the newly appointed spokesperson of Global FC, that his first priority is signing a Pinoy player based abroad who is being chased by Real Madrid and Barcelona, the US team and the Philippine national team.

You have to see this guy to believe him. Hes quite a character and hes really something. One for the books, Avril Folle said while declining to name the character due to the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Just imagine, Real Madrid and Barcelona are chasing him? And hes being offered to join the US national team, while the Azkals are also chasing him! Where can you find somebody like that! He should be in Global."

CFA gets new officers

By Cheska D. Geli
Saturday, March 31, 2012

THE general elections of the Cebu Football Association pushed through despite the risk of it being sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation of declaring it null and void.

The election yesterday at the Sarrosa International allowed both regular and probationary members to vote.

The elections didnt go smooth as planned with some football clubs contesting of procedure in the selection of the boards list of voting members.

Originally, the board presented 25 voting members, saying only the 25 qualified in their criteriahaving paid in full the membership fee, participated in the CFA-organized Aboitiz Cup and of being a member of good standing.

As the board was about to create the ad hoc committee for elections, a concern was raised by Queen City United representative Atty. Julius Entise regarding his group not making in the list and eventually questioned the validity of the voting criteria.

We should determine first who are qualified to vote before creating a voting body, Entise said.

CFA outgoing president Richard Montayre said that Queen City United is under Cebu Amateur Football Club and is the clubs official football team.

But CAFC member Raffy Musni stood up and said that in the last elections, QCU and CAFC had separate votes and questioned why they are singling out QCU this time.

This moved Entise to propose a motion declaring the CFA list of voting members null and that was unanimously voted by the body, 23-0.

Criteria

As the next move was to set for the voting criteria, Entise opposed Montayre who was laying the criteria saying that the general assembly can replace the board as he referred to the by-laws.

Entise once again proposed another motion to allow all clubs present to vote.

Since it was also unanimously voted, 23-1, it disregarded the CFA voting criteria which meant even probationary members got the chance to vote.

From 25 voting members, it increased to 43 clubs.

And from the list of 28 nominees, only 20 accepted the nomination and among those who declined to run were Montayre and Eleazer Toledo.

The top five vote getters who are to serve four-year terms are Engr. Rodney Orale (32 votes), CAFC members Ricky Dakay (29), Musni (28), Glenn Quisido and Sacred Heart Ateneo de Cebu athletic director Rico Navarro who both got 27.

Nimrod Quiones and Michael Veloso, Joey Herrera and University of San Jose-Recoletos also got elected to the board and will serve two-year terms.

Except for Engr. Orale, all the new officers were nominated by the Cebu Amateur Football Club.

Dakay, Musni and Quiones have also served the CFA board in previous terms.

The new board will be given a month to elect the president and other committee head and to present the new budget before a congress and on May 1.

QCU routs Lions, 4-1, in UFL

By Mike T. Limpag
Saturday, March 31, 2012

CEBU Queen City United routed Lions Meltique Beef FC, 4-1, to solidify its hold of the third spot at the end of the first round of the United Football League Division 2.

Rommel Cuizon and newly-signed Ariel Cahilig got the first two goals for Queen City before the Lions scored late in the first half for a 2-1 score.

In the second half, it was all Queen City as they added two more goals for the final tally.

Queen City now has 25 points on an 8-1-2 record and has not lost in its last seven matches.

After playing 11 matches, all Division 2 teams will meet anew for the second round and the top-ranked team will be promoted to the first division, replacing the bottom ranked team.

Pachanga, the last team to beat Queen City, leads the table with 31 points after drawing second placer Diliman in its last match, while Agila FC is fourth with 21 and Laos is fifth with 15.

Meanwhile, in Div. 1, Global FC whipped Kaya FC, 5-1, to improve to 21 points after nine matches, while Loyola drew Air Force, 3-3, for second place with 19 points. However, Loyola has a game at hand.

The UFL will take a break for the Holy Week and will resume action in two weeks.

Air Force stalls Loyola; Global takes top spot

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Defending champion Air Force scored two goals in injury time to salvage a. dramatic 3-3 draw against Loyola Meralco Saturday night and move up to fifth in. the United Football League at the University of Makati.

National team striker Ian Araneta capped the Airmens sprited fightback with a 95th minute strike just three minutes after substitute Joebel Bermejo put the defending champions within one goal.

We needed this result and we wanted to prove that were not a team of has-beens, said Araneta in Filipino.

The Airmen won just two of their first six matches heading into the game, while the Sparks were in flying form with four straight victories.

This is a big confidence boost for us. Hopefully, this could be the start of something big for Air Force.

The draw prevented Loyola from dislodging No. 1 Global, which produced a brilliant attacking display in the 5-1 demolition of Kaya.

Carli de Murga struck twice, after Val Kama and Izo El-Habbib found the back. of the net as Global notched its fifth straight win, putting the Dan Palami-coached side on top with 21 points.

De Murga also forced the own goal from Adrian Semblat in the 79th minute in a thorough domination of the side that came into the match heralded as the leagues best defensive team.

Loyola dropped to second with 19 points with a match in hand, while Kaya absorbed its second defeat in eight matches.

In a rematch of the UFL Cup finals won by Air Force, the Sparks took a comfortable 3-1 lead into added time after an 82nd minute goal from Phil Younghusband, who also opened the scoring 13 minutes into the match.

But the highly physical match that also saw seven yellow cards turned when James Younghusband was sent off for a needless nudge on Herbert Bayona on an off-the-ball play and Air Force was quick to capitalize.

Chieffy Caligdong found Bermejo at the far post and the right winger bundled it into the roof of the goal.

Bermejo was also involved in the equalizer as his through ball found Araneta, who held off Jeong Byeong-yeol before firing low past Ref Cuaresma for eighth goal in the last four matches.

Araneta first equalized in the 23rd minute as his 25-yard free kick from a tight angle found the top corner.

But Mark Hartmann also curled in a free kick five minutes later, before Air Force was rewarded with a penalty at the stroke of halftime after Cuaresma fouled Araneta inside the box. Cuaresma saved Randy Bela-ongs penalty, preserving the lead for the Sparks at halftime.

Daz: 'I like our personnel'

No truth to the rumor that was Holy Water poured on Chuck Heater last year.
There's a lot of uncertainty upon entering the Big East season for Temple's football team.
Lack of talent is not one of them, though.
On Friday, after the 13th practice of the season, head coach Steve Addazio made clear that "I like our personnel" and that there is plenty of talent to sustain and build upon the level of success of the last three years.
I agree.
Chuck Heater won't have to be a miracle-worker with this group of Owls.

While there are significant losses in the areas of offensive line, the team is pretty well set at most other positions.
Even talented tailback Bernard Pierce, who figures to go now lower than the third round of this year's NFL draft, finished second on the team in all-purpose yards to his replacement, Matty "Rock" Brown. In the true spread that Addazio plans to run with talented (and unbeaten) quarterback Chris Coyer at the helm, you can make a pretty good argument that Rock is a more effective college back.
The credit for much of this talent still goes to former head coach Al Golden, who made a practice of stockpiling prospects by redshirting most of his incoming freshmen. That was part of Golden's "core values" of building a "house of brick, not straw."
In each of his final two seasons, Golden redshirted no less than 16 of his 25 incoming signees.
Many of those guys will play significant roles with the 2012 Owls.
"The reason I redshirted at Temple so much," Golden told a Miami-area newspaper recently, "was that I was committed to building a program. That's the way the so-called powerhouse programs do it. We weren't able to do that the first couple of years, but we were able to do it by the time I left. I want to do the same thing [at Miami]."
Addazio doesn't believe in redshirting as much as Golden did, but that doesn't mean he won't benefit from it.
In many positions, even ones where high-profile starters left, there could be a talent upgrade from last year.
Take the case of tight Alex Jackson.
Jackson, another redshirt, split starting time with Evan Rodriguez two years ago.
"I think of our all tight ends last year he had the highest end [talent]," Addazio said. "He wasn't ready to play last year, but now he is and that's going to show."
Even on the offensive line, if you count Jackson's starts from two years ago and Sean Boyle's starts from two years ago and Martin Wallace starting all last year, that's three returning offensive line starting caliber players and that's pretty good. Also, Big 33 recruit Adam Metz benefited from a redshirt year (thanks, Al Golden) and is ready to compete for his spot. These are quality offensive linemen.
On defense, there is plenty of talent along the line with John Youboty, Levi Brown, Kadeem Custis, Kamal Johnson, Marcus Green and Sean Daniels all returning. All have started games in the past. Two starting linebackers, Blaze Caponegro and Ahkeem Smith, return, as does Olaniyi Adewole, who got considerable playing time last year as a sub. Starting strong safety Justin Gildea returns, as does his backup, Chris Hutton. Starting free safety Kevin Kroboth is gone, but one-time five-star recruit Vaughn Carraway was his backup last year and should slide right into that spot without a drop in production.
At the corners, last year's true freshman, Anthony Robey, was a lock-down cover specialist and starter until he got hurt midway into the season but is looking in top form in practice. Zamel Johnson also started at corner, but he is being pushed by Rutgers' transfer Abdul Smith. Maurice Jones, who got plenty of playing time, is also in the corner mix.
Temple defensive coordinator Chuck Heater was called "Mother Teresa" by no less an authority than Urban Meyer for his work as DC of the Florida defense two years ago.
Addazio could have called Heater the same thing last year the way he pieced together a Temple defense  that lost seven starters from 2010 into the third-best defense in the nation (behind only Alabama and LSU) in 2011.
Heater won't have to work a miracle for Temple's defense this year because he's got more capable parts already in place to have a defense that keeps the Owls in every game.
The same can be said for the rest of the team as well and that's doesn't even count the reinforcements from the calvary who arrive (hello, Kevin Newsome, Jamie Gilmore and company) in July.
Aug. 31 can't come soon enough.
To borrow a phrase from Mr. T, I pity the fool called Villanova.
Hopefully, a blowout there starts an avalanche of similar good results for Temple fans the rest of the fall.

Plight Of Persija

The name is the same as is the club crest and they both have had difficulties playing in their home city of Jakarta but thats where the similarities end. In the eyes of the fans Persija (Indonesia Premier League (official league)) and Persija (Indonesia Super League (unofficial league)) are two very different entities. Born out of an ownership struggle within Persija at the start of the season, Persija IPL opted for the official status offered by the IPL but the fans were having none of it. They emphatically stood behind Persija ISL and from day one the IPL version were doomed.

The Persija fans, known as Jakmania, are used to travelling round the country following their team. Difficulties in obtaining the necessary permits to hold games in Jakarta have seen them take their road show to places like Semarang, Solo and Malang but each time they have been followed by a hard core of fans desperate to see their team at any cost.

Persija IPL have enjoyed no such luck. With the Jakmania firmly against them, they have been forced to take to the highways and byways of Java to play their home games, most recently in the east Javan city of Madiun, normally famous for sugar and steam railways! Before that it was Bantul or Solo.

Quite why the club owners decided to stick with the Persija brand even though the support had said they would not support them is just one of many mysteries that plagues/lights up football in this part of the world.

The IPL, not unreasonably, would have been keen for a team from Jakarta to be represented in their league. There was one last year, called Jakarta 1928 FC but they struggled to attract any kind of support. Instead of trying to build a new team and a new brand they just copied the Persija imaging and it hasnt worked.

What the IPL is left with is a team with no home and no fans. And in the world of football that is a distinct disadvantage. Footballers thrive on security and routine. They need to know who theyre playing, when and where. For Persija the first two are usually fine; one thing the IPL has brought to the table is regular weekend games and not spreading ties over the week. The where is the problem and given the distances involved it can be quite a large problem.

The season started well enough for Persija IPL with two wins and three draws in their opening five games putting them at the business end of the table. However they couldnt sustain that run and their next five games has seen them lose four, draw one and score just one goal leaving them 9th in the 12 team league.

Goalkeeper Aleksander Vrteski suggests that the team have missed the skills of Portuguese playmaker Jaime Braganca who started the season but moved to Rumanian side FC Vaslui.

Despite the loss of Braganca there is still plenty of experience in the team and the signing of Indonesian defender Diego Michels from Pelita Jaya in the ISL showed they have the ability to pull in big name players.

Emmanuel de Porras has earned a big reputation in Indonesia having played for teams like Persija (ISL) and PSIS Semarang, but his return of three goals this season, the last in the first week of January means the team are struggling to worry opponents too much.

Vrteski recognizes the uncertainty of where the team will play their home games is a factor in the poor run of results but says it is a part of the job players need to put to the back of their minds. It's difficult physically with the extra travel involved (but) self motivation comes from yourself. Being a professional footballer you shouldn't need extra motivation playing away or home.

To be fair to the players they do seem to be getting somethings right despite the difficult circumstances. Their poor form of late has ironically coincided with a much tighter defence; the goal they conceded away to Persijap in their last game was the sixth in their last five games. In their first five games, when they were unbeaten, they conceded nine goals!

The beauty of a 12 team league is there are only 12 teams in the league! And while the table may look none too pleasant for the players when they wake up in the morning and read the local papers, they will also recognize the fact that they are only seven points behind the IPL leaders, Persibo. With a mid season break round the corner and the possibility of fresh faces in the transfer window the players know that a couple of wins can totally change the mood around the club and send them up the table.

The long term viability of the club is a totally different matter. Having two teams called Persija isnt the way to build a strong league and if, or when, common sense returns to Indonesian football its hard to see Persija IPL continuing in its current format.

Davao eyes keeping U23 PFF-Suzuki Minda title

By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

Friday, March 30, 2012

DEFENDING champion Davao Football Association (Davao FA) will open its title-retention bid when it plays Davao del Norte at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the start of the PFFSuzuki U23 Mindanao championships-Southern Mindanao Qualifying Tournament at the E-Park Field in Tagum City.

Multi-titled head coach Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon said the Medvil Football Club-bannered Davao squad is ready to repeat their victory last year.

"We are prepared. The players' training went well but we cannot underestimate our opponents," Carreon, who was attending the Kasibulan Instructors' Course in San Carlos City Friday, texted Sun.Star Davao in the vernacular.

He, however, said players from the University of Mindanao have been missing practices as they are also preparing for the National Prisaa Collegiate Games slated April 22 to 28 in Cebu City.

The veteran coach also said Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley are strong teams that may give them a stiffer contest this year.

The three teams will play a home-and-away format of competition in the regional qualifying. The squad with the most number of points will represent the region to the Mindanao finals that Davao City also topped last year.

Carreon picked Dominador Tato IV, Roeder Stephen Ignacio, Dean Mark Galleto, Sean Clarke Labang, Renz Rhey Napuran, Renelle Pino, Mark Paul Dayanan, Imardino Polo, Khadafi Biruar, Roland Manabit, Frances Jay Abrasaldo, Roelfred Napuran, David Angelo Diamante, Patrick Asoque, Jay Francis Abalunan, Michael Nehemiah Simms, Jacinth Ibanez, Raymon Paredo, Jomar Acedo, Yoshiharu Koizumi, Jestoni Felipe, Malon Demapanag, Jerrard Bierneza, Michael Pantojan, Danilo Lacuesta Jr., and Amani Aguinaldo to comprise the Rafael "Pops" Vilela-managed Davao City team before he left for San Carlos City.

Alvic Troyo and Michael Jay Fernandez will serve as assistant coaches.

Davao City will host Davao del Norte on April 22 before playing Comvaleos at their home turf on April 8. Dabawenyos will then play Comval at Tionko field on May 6.

Limpag: Will we see the end of factionalism in CFA?

By Mike T. Limpag

Fair Play

Friday, March 30, 2012

I THOUGHT Cebu Football Association president Richard Montayre was joking when he told me last week he saw my names among the nominees for todays CFA elections, so I didnt really pay that much attention.

Imagine my surprise when I learned Richard wasnt joking and Im really one of the nominees.

To whoever nominated me, thanks, but no thanks.

I am withdrawing the nomination, since, one, I have no business being with the CFA board, it raises a lot of conflicts of interests and two, just because I have a column on football doesnt mean I should be in the board.

What am I supposed to do there? Pester Dan Palami daily until he makes Cebu his permanent home?

That doesnt mean, of course, a journalist isnt qualified to sit on the board, as three othersincluding one I unabashedly said Id support a few columns backare nominated.

Yes, I love the sport and I want to see the CFA succeed but I rather like my current role and besides, I think I can serve local football better doing what Ive always donewriting about it, criticizing things I dont like and praising the CFA for things I liked.

Aside from my name, I was also surprised to see Richard and Bro. Mari Aberasturi among the list of nominees, since the last time we talked about the elections, it seems theyd rather run a 160K ultra than run in one.

As for me, guys who didnt know they were nominated shouldnt be running because there is so much at stake in todays elections, theres no room for surprise nominees or double talk. Guys who are nominated should be those who are ready to take the job, not those who get a nasty surprise when they see the list of nominees.

Anyway, whoever gets elected today, I hope they will get the support of the community.

The last four years werent exactly rosy for the sport because of the factions and another four years of that is what we DONT need. Id rather run the 160K than go through four more years of infighting.

Despite the infighting, weve made some strides. Imagine the things Cebu football could have done if the community had been united.

So good luck with todays elections and I hope the CFA gets a fresh start and support
of the community it serves.

And oh, in case you missed my point, Im not running.

UFL. Aside from the elections, another thing to look forward to today is the UFL action in ManilaGlobal vs. Kaya, and Loyola vs. Philippine Air Force.

Global, Kaya and Loyola all have 18 points and are only separated by goal difference, 21 for Loyola, 13 for Global and 8 for Kaya.

UFL Cup winners Air Force is seventh with seven points and could vault to fifth with an upset over Loyola.

Cebu Queen City, too, has a 6 p.m. match against the Lions, which sits second to the last in Division 2, and I see another rout for the Cebuanos.

A win for Cebu will boost its hold of the third spot in Division 2, before they take on the leaders Pachanga and Diliman anew in the second round of matches.

By the way, Im interested who Dan Palami will list as his sub keeper in todays game as his starting keeper, Paolo Pascual, is on a six-week rest and Global only has Jerome Etoundi as the other keeper. And according to their former coach, Etoundi has two red cards in three starts.

I wonder how Carli de Murga would fare against Nate Burkey?

CFA to hold elections today

By Cheska D. Geli

Friday, March 30, 2012

FOOTBALL coaches, aficionados, tournament organizers and columnists make up the list of the 27 nominees in the Cebu Football Associations elections on March 31 at Sarrosa International Hotel.

Leading the list are Don Bosco Technical Center coaches Glen Ramos and Bro. Jose Maria Aberasturi.

Tournament organizers of the upcoming 1st Bro Football Cup Keith Buyco and Rodney Orale also made it to the list as well as Thirsty Cup prime mover Chad Songalia.

Current CFA officials Eugene Ynclino III, Richard Montayre, Eleazar Toledo also received nominations despite Montayre and Toledo having announced that they wont seek another term.

Officers of the Cebu Amateur Football club Ricky Dakay, Glen Quisido and Raffy Musni were also nominated.

Football columnists Nimrod Quiones, Rico Navarro and Noel Villaflor were also considered.

Other nominees were Leo Dizon, Fr. Jhun Paradiang, Dido Aviles, Nito Tapia, Antonio Moraza, Allan Nuez, Evan Ancajas, Tirso Ramon Roa, Antonio Trebol, Michael Veloso, Joselito Herrera, Heinz Kuiueke and John Torrefiel.

There will be 28 member-clubs that will vote and the CFA said the number was based on the active schools and clubs that were able to join the Aboitiz Football Cup, a CFA-organized tournament in partnership with Aboitiz, for the past two years.

Only the nine who will get the most number of votes will serve in the board of directors. The top five will sit for four years, while the sixth to ninth placers will have two-year terms.

Kaya, Global, Loyola eye lead

Kaya FC and Global FC clash for the lead even as Loyola Meralco Sparks guns for a share of it against reigning League and Cup champion Air Force Phoenix in todays resumption of the United Football Leagues First Division at the University of Makati field in Makati City.

Tied with 18 points, Kaya and Global collide at 2 p.m. while the star-studded Loyola side tries to get back at Cup tormentor Air Force in their much-anticipated duel at 4 p.m.

It will be an explosive twinbill with the four teams, backstopped by members of the Azkals, all tipped to contend for the crown.

Loyola will be bannered by the prolific brothers Phil and James Younghusband, who combined for a league-leading 17 goals, while Air Force will be led by Chieffy Caligdong and Ian Araneta.

Kaya, for its part, has Jason Sabio and Lexton Moy aside from the injured Aly Borromeo while Global boasts of the combo of Misagh Bahadoran, Carlos de Murga and Fil-Spanish siblings Juani and Angel Guirado.

While Kaya, Global and Loyola are on top of the heap, Air Force is struggling at joint sixth with the Green Archers United with seven points behind Army Fritz & Macziol FC with eight points and No. 4 Stallion Gilligans FC with 13 points.

In the lone Second Division match, Cebu Queen City United meets Lions Meltque Beef FC at 6 p.m.

The Cebuanos are seeking to firm up their hold of No. 3 with 22 points and close the gap between them and the pacesetting Pachanga FC with 31 points and Diliman Victory Liner FC with 29 points while the Lions are looking to come out of a tie for No. 10 with Manila All-Japan FC with seven points apiece to a share of Dolphins United FC at No. 9 with 10 points.

Chieffy: Air Force is the Ginebra of UFL

By Alder Almo

When Chieffy Caligdong scores, fans roar in approval. When Mark Caguioa scores, three fourths of the Big Dome goes wild.

Caligdong can zigzag his way to the goal the way Caguioa slashes to the basket.

The Philippine Azkals co-captain and Air Force midfielder pictures himself as "The Spark" in football.

"Si Mark (Caguioa), pag gustong umiskor dire-diretso yan. Parang ako, ganun din sa field," said Caligdong, a self-confessed Brgy. Ginebra, when he appeared in the PBA AKTV Center last night.

Caligdong actually rooted for Purefoods before when his childhood idol Alvin Patrimonio was still playing. He also roots for James Yap since they are both Ilonggos (James hails from Escalante while Chieffy comes from Barotac Nuevo) and represented Western Visayas in the Palarong Pambansa together.

But Caligdong got bitten by Brgy. Ginebra's never-say-die bug. He first captured the imagination of a basketball-crazy nation when he scored a nutmeg goal against Mongolia in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers in Panaad Stadium last year.

Just like Caguioa, Caligdong has a flair for drama. His charisma mirrors that of Caguioa and it spilled over to his team in the United Football League (UFL).

"Ang Phil. Air Force parang Ginebra yan. Never-say-die kami at crowd favorite dahil pure homegrown kami at walang import," Caligdong said.

If PBA has the Manila Classico Brgy. Ginebra-Bmeg rivalry, the UFL is slowly shaping up its own in Phil. Air Force and Loyola Meralco Sparks.

"May rivalry na rin kaming nabuo sa UFL with Loyola. Bukas, siguradong gusto nilang bumawi sa pagkatalo nila sa Finals," Caligdong said.

The comparison is not far-fetched.

Just like B-Meg, which has the tag as the glamour team in the PBA, Loyola has that aura too with Phil and James Younghusband leading the team.

On the other side is Air Force, whose homegrown tag has the "masa" appeal.

The Airmen defeated the Sparks in a heated championship battle in the last UFL Cup. Expect another playoff atmosphere when they meet for the first time since that emotional game.

Caligdong, however, is doubtful to play in today's much awaited rematch due to a back injury he sustained last week in the Airmen's 3-5 loss to Global.

"Sana makalaro ako bukas. Depende pa kung makakuha ako ng clearance from our medical staff," Caligdong told philstar.com.

It will be a big blow to the defending champions if Caligdong can't play as the squad is currently mired in the middle of the pack while Loyola is on top of the heap.

But just like his favorite team that won despite Caguioa getting injured midway, Caligdong is hoping that their own Manila Classico match today against the Sparks will end in their favor despite the odds stacked against them.

"Never say die," Caligdong said.

Fun with Mega Millions and Temple football

"You won't believe this, but we just got a donation of $231 million" Bill Bradshaw
tells a puzzled Steve Addazio.

My Mega Millions' ticket Stephen Colbert's both have something in common, No. 6 as the all-important Mega Ball number tonight.
Colbert got to his number a little bit differently than I did, picking 1-2-3-4-5 as his first five and six as his Mega Ball number.
Heck, I know both Colbert and I have the same chance of winning (zero) but it is fun to think about so I made it a game with two lines based on "some" (not all) of my favorite Temple football players.
I went with No. 6 because it was the number worn by Paul Palmer, the Temple football player who came closest to winning the Heisman Trophy (second, 1986).
Palmer's line: 12 (Brian Broomell), 26 (Anthony Young), 43 (Adrian Robinson), 52 (Stephen Johnson) and 55 (Steve Conjar). 12-26-43-52-55 (6).
Steve Conjar
Then I went with a line featuring Maxwell Award winner Steve Joachim (9) that includes Matt Brown (2),  New Mexico Bowl MVP Chris Coyer (10), Brandon McManus (19), Ahkeem Smith (24) and Bernard Pierce and Garden State Bowl MVP  Mark Bright (30). That line reads 2-10-19-24-30 (9).
I'm only spending $2 to win $640 million because you don't have to be a mathematician to figure out that purchasing $4 worth of tickets doesn't double your chance of winning.
If I'm the only winner, I'll "settle" for the cash payout of $462 million and give half to Temple football via the Xtra Point Club. The only condition is that Temple spend it on a new stadium and name it "Temple University Stadium" or, at the very least, purchase the naming rights to Lincoln Financial Field and call it "Temple University Stadium."
(Hey, if Akron can build a beautiful stadium for $61.6 million five years ago, Temple can build something slightly better for $231 million. It already has the land, 15th Street and Norris to 15th and Montgomery.)
That's it.  I'll scrape by on the other $231 million.
Matt Brown will be wearing No. 2 this year.

I'm serious, too. Temple's lawyers can consider this post a promisory note.
Once they get the money, it is theirs to spend under no further conditions and no further suggestions from me. (It would be nice, though, if it gave Temple fans the security of knowing another program won't be able to poach their coach at the end of every season.)
I'll give the money to Bill Bradshaw and Steve Addazio at halftime of the spring game on April 14 with one of those oversized white checks with Cherry writing.
I don't have kids and only one living relative so I can afford to do this.
In addition to the tangible cash contribution, an ancillary benefit is that Temple football becomes the No. 1 story in the Philadelphia media. I'm sure the cynical professional sports media will be calling me crazy but it will be crazy like a fox because any publicity is good publicity when it comes to putting Temple TUFF front and center of Philly sports talk.
Heck, with a jackpot like this, maybe the talk of the nation as well.
It would be fun to find out.
No Mercedes or Porches, strippers, mansions, like that guy from West Virginia who besmirched an otherwise great sports broadcasting name  (Jack Whitaker) for me. Maybe a Hurricane-proof six-month-a-year snowbird getaway house near Tampa, Fla., an HDTV and a new Chevy and I'm good to go.
Now comes the hard part. Getting those numbers to come up.

Little Azkals expand roster with eleven new members

ALMOST all of the former members of the Little Azkals or the national under-13 team plus 11 new players have been selected for the training camp of the national under-14 team, which will kickoff on March 31 until April 15 at the Don Bosco Boys Home in Liloan, Cebu.
Head coach Oliver BingBing Colina and his staff scouted the boys during the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Regional Festival of Football in San Carlos City, Davao, Naga City, Iligan and Laguna.
Former Little Azkals who have been selected for the training camp are Cebus Moiselle Angelo Alforque, Lawrence Colina, Major Dean Ebarle, Vincent Erik Lovitos and Kintaro Miyagi; Manilas John William Abraham, Marco Alessandro Casambre, Harrel Rainier Dayan, Josh Albert Miller and Ray Vincent Sanciangco; Cagayan de Oros Jeremiah Borlongan and Dimitri Lionel Limbo; Davaos Darius Joseph Diamante and Javier Romero-Salas; Dumaguetes Jhenry Omar Hamdan, Kairyll Vienne Parao and Jose Anton Yared; Dipologs Sebastian Rafael Patangan and San Carlos Citys Mason Trent Vergara.
New players added to the camp are San Carlos Citys Shanden Vergara and Gabriel Dyner Mendoza; Masbates Kent Stuart Gastador, Jovan Marfiga and Rexon Xyrus Capellan; Iloilos Jed Deleriarte and Red Brilliantes; Dumaguetes Floren Christian Lapas; Bukidnons Chester Gio Palualan; Cebus Brandon Durano; and North Cotabatos John Lorence Camiring.
Deleriarte, Lapas and Vergara are not new to the camp as they were also part of the training pool last year. But they were cut when the final lineup was made.
Of the 30, Colina also selected 22 who will be going to Italy for intensive training, which would include competitions with junior Italian clubs.
The 22 is comprised of all of the former Little Azkals plus Deleriarte, Lapas and Vergara. Colina also included Lorenzo Genco, who is already in Italy. Genco is also an original member of the Little Azkal lineup.
Being part of the Italy lineup will also not mean that an automatic slot at the official lineup for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-14 Festival of Football in Malaysia this June. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON

Will we see the end of factionism in CFA?

(This is the draft of my Fair Play column for Sun.Star Cebu, March 31 issue)
I THOUGHT Cebu Football Association president Richard Montayre was joking when he said he saw my names among the nominees for todays CFA elections, so I didnt really pay that much attention.

Perhaps they had a change of mind or perhaps, like me, they didnt know they were nominated?

As for me, guys who didnt know they were nominated shouldnt be running because there is so much at stake in todays elections, theres no room for surprise nominees or double talk. Guys who are nominated should be those who are ready to take the job, not those who get a nasty surprise when they see the list of nominees.

Anyway, whoever gets elected today, I hope they will get the support of the community.  The last four years wasnt exactly rosy for the sport because of the factions and another four years of that is what we DONT need.  Id rather run the 160K than go through four more years of infighting.

Despite the infighting, weve made some strides, imagine the things Cebu football could have done if the community was united.

So good luck with todays elections and I hope the CFA gets a fresh start and support of the community it serves.

And oh, in case you missed my point, Im not running.

A win for Cebu will boost its hold of the third spot in Division 2, before they take on the leaders Pachanga and Diliman anew in the second round of matches.

By the way, Im interested who Dan Palami will list as his sub keeper in todays game as his starting keeper Paolo Pascual is on a six-week rest and Global only has Jerome Etoundi as the other keeper.  And if my memorys right, Etoundi has been red carded the last two times he started.

I wonder how Carli de Murga would fare against Nate Burkey?

Fil-Spanish Azkals to reunite for Suzuki Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Fil-Spanish players Angel and Juani Guirado and Carli de Murga said yesterday they will suit up with the Azkals if called to action by coach Michael Weiss in the Suzuki Cup, also known as the Asean Football Championships, on Nov. 24-Dec. 22 in Malaysia and Thailand.

The Philippines has qualified for the eight-team Suzuki Cup finals with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. If FIFA suspends Indonesia on a charge of government interference in sporting affairs, three teams from the October qualifiers in Myanmar will advance to the tournament proper to join the five seeds.

The Guirado brothers are set to wed their Spanish fiances this year while De Murga has no immediate plan of settling down although his Spanish girlfriend Maria Flores, a journalist, arrives today to spend a month here. Juani, 32, marries his girlfriend Andrea Marijuan in Burgos on June 16. Angel, 27, ties the knot with Rocio Carvajal, who recently visited him in Manila for two weeks, in Malaga in July.

The Fil-Spanish booters, who call themselves The Three Musketeers, are also teammates on the Global squad in the UFL. They battle Kaya F. C. on Saturday in Juanis farewell match. The older Guirado returns to Spain on Monday.

Ive been away for about two months now and I must go back to my job doing quality control as inspector of materials with Pepsi Cola in Spain, said Juani who scored the marginal goal in the Azkals 4-3 win over Palestine to bag the bronze at the recent AFC Challenge Cup in Nepal. I will never forget playing for the Philippines and I want to come back. Ive won medals and trophies in the Spanish league but the bronze with the Azkals is special and historic for the country. I am proud to play for the Philippine national team and one day, when I have children, I will tell them how lucky I was to play for the Philippines. It is a big honor for me. Playing national teams from Palestine, India, North Korea, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan is a new experience and Im grateful for the opportunity.

When Juani returns to Spain, he will reenlist with his Division III club and resume his work at Pepsi Cola. Jobs are difficult to find in Europe, he said. Life is hard. Andrea and I plan to come to the Philippines in October and wed like to just take a vacation for two weeks. I havent seen how beautiful the country is and I couldnt even go to visit my grandfather in Isabela. I will stay on until the end of the Suzuki Cup. Will I consider living in the Philippines? You can never tell. It will depend on opportunities. I have cousins, uncles and aunts in the Philippines but my parents are in Malaga.

Angel said he is excited to continue playing with the Azkals. Weve improved so much since I first joined, he said. Thats because weve become more familiar with each other, gaining more experience as a team. We face a very complicated situation because so many players come from different countries and we get together only for a few practices before playing a tournament. But little by little, were improving. Coach Michael has done a very good job of getting us to play as a team.

De Murga, 23, said his older brother Antonio, 25, is recovering from two knee football-related injuries and plans to try out with the Azkals. Playing for the Philippine team is an honor because it is my mothers country, he said. I really miss Spain. Thats why I spend all my money eating in a Spanish restaurant (Barcinos). When the UFL ends, Ill go back to Cadiz. I hope to return to play with the Azkals in October or maybe come earlier.

Fair Play: Paolo Pascual pays it forward

(This is my draft for my Fair Play for Sun.Star Cebu's March 30 issue)
THE Pascual family is beaming with pride these days, not because of what Paolo is doing now in his football career, but of the way how this young man turned out to be.

He continues to stay humble and focused, and doesn't let the trappings of his being a footballer in the UFL and the national team get into his head (as one kababayan said it, "Doc, kung ako si Paolo, kada lugar naa nay uyab).

And now, the young man is planning to put up a goalkeeping clinic for young Cebuano keepers to share what he has learned in his stint with the Azkals.  A very commendable move since what most of the keepers here in Cebu lack--as what Paolo himself experienced--is advanced goalkeeping training.

Based on what his dad Joel told me, Paolo plans to keep the clinic small, just six to eight guys, thus making the sessions more meaningful. However, for now, these are just plans as Paolo's number one goal is to rest and recover from his injury.

By the way, his injury reminded me of the time when I "accidentally" kicked the family jewels of the goalie in a coke-go-for-goal semifinals. Fearing a red card, I held on to my knee and put on the best acting job I could and the ref, who I think is now one of our Fifa-licensed officials, bought it.

I'm not saying, of course, that Chieffy was milking it and that he wanted to intentionally hurt Paolo. In my case, I had no intentions to hurt the keeper, all I saw was the ball, the goal, and wrongfully assumed I was quick enough to beat the keeper.

Paolo's injury isn't the first, and it surely wouldn't be the last in the UFL, because players react differently in 50-50 situations, especially those involving a keeper.

But I'm glad that the clash has raised concerns for players safety in the league, because they need it. After Paolo, another guy got injured, in what was euphemistically described as a "head to elbow" collision.

I asked Ritchie Gannaban of the UFL what their plans are regarding these incidents, he said, "For incidents of violence, the UFL ex-comm must first establish a disciplinary committee who will look into these. The committee must be headed by a lawyer with at least two other members, who must not be affiliated with any club nor with the FA/UFL."

I think that's a laudable move because the UFL needs it.  One of the ugly side of airing UFL matches live is seeing dirty plays, flopping and the usual shenanigans you see.  Guys, you're on TV, there's instant replay and we see you!

And man, some of them aren't good examples for kids who are learning the game.  I remember, once, Sepp Blatter blaming the stars who fall at the slightest touch for teaching a generation of floppers and appealing that they help promote fair play, instead of fair flops.

These things happen in football but that doesnt mean we should do nothing about it.

As to the UFL, I hope the same thing happens.  I hope the disciplinary committee gets formed, pronto.  And I hope incidents that involve a player getting injured--even if these are not called fouls and doesn't get into the match report as in the case of the "head to elbow" collision--gets automatically reviewed.

What I like about the league is that officials dont have that airwe know what we are doing and dont question usand listen to fans concerns because a few years ago, guys like Ritchie and Santi were ordinary fans, just like us who decided to start a league.

The UFL is on unchartered waters because we never had a league like this.  Some players, I think, forget where they are playing now, and go for those old-school fouls and dirty tricks that sometimes are captured on camera, so sending an early message that you cannot do these stuffs in the league, might help curb it.

Then, we kept saying its time to improve how officials treat the sport and they have, tremendously, and I say, its time, too, for players to improve the way they treat it and leave those old-school-dirty- machismo-driven dirty plays in the dust bin. And the flops, too. (Unless they are as hilariously good as Mick Pennissis)

Azkals Coach Gets Thumbs Up

By JONAS TERRADO

MANILA, Philippines Azkals team manager Dan Palami gave the teams German coach Michael Weiss credit for helping the team reach new heights of achievement in the 12 months that Weiss had handled the national football squad.

If we go by results then I think he has given us the results that we wanted, said Palami. He got us to the qualifiers and the main draw (of the AFC Challenge Cup) and we go to third.

It's historic already that we got into the final eight and even more historic with the third place achievement, he said during Tuesdays PSA Forum.

The Challenge Cup campaign is regarded as the most notable moment under Weiss.

The Azkals won 4-2 on aggregate over Mongolia, then placed second to Palestine in the qualifying round in Myanmar over a year ago to earn a spot in the main draw of the recently-concluded tournament in Kathmandu, Nepal.

From there, the Filipino booters overcame an opening day loss to eventual champion North Korea to reach the semis. They suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Tajikistan before salvaging third with a 4-2 victory over Palestine.

Weiss also steered the Azkals to the second of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers last July. It beat Sri Lanka in the first round before bowing to Kuwait.

The most disappointing stint for Weiss was when the Philippine U-23 team won just a single game in the Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta last November. Regardless, Palami is satisfied with the overall result.

Judging from what I've seen, I think it slowly took a while for the player and the coach to really have the cohesion that we wanted, but I see that they're slowly evolving into a very good combination, said Palami.

Schrck to join Hoffenheim

1899 Hoffenheim have announced their first new signing ahead of next season. Stephan Schrck, who currently plays for Bundesliga 2 leaders SpVgg Greuther Frth, will move to Sinsheim on a free transfer this summer after the defender put pen-to-paper on a contract lasting until 30th June 2015 with the Kraichgau outfit.

"I'm very much looking forward to the challenge at 1899, who have made a name for themselves on their way to becoming an established side in the Bundesliga," stated Schrck of his move. "I can take the next step in my career here."

Hoffenheim's head coach Markus Babbel had this to say about his first summer signing: "Stephan Schrck was a prime transfer target of mine. He has all the qualities that a modern day defender needs to have. In signing him we have gained the necessary substance and will have more alternatives in our defensive department for the future."

Philippine international on the books

The son of a Philippine mother and German father, Schrck played for DJK Schweinfurt during his early years before moving to SpVgg Greuther Frth in 2001 as a teenager. In 2004/05 he made the leap into the first team and also represented Germany at both the U-18 and U-20 level.

However last year Schrck announced his intention to play for the Philippines and promptly went on to make his international debut on 29th June 2011 against Sri Lanka. A month later he scored his first goal during a World Cup qualifier versus Kuwait which ended in a 2-1 loss for the Philippines.

Azkals to revisit home in Panaad

(This is the draft of my Fair Play column for March 29 issue of Sun.Star Cebu)

IF plans push through, Bacolod could be hosting a friendly involving the Philippine national team and China on June 12, and I think its about time this football hotbed gets to host a friendly again.

Make no mistake about it, the fans in Manila are great and they really support the national team, but there is something about the atmosphere in Panaad that sets it apart.

I saw one match in the Rizal Memorial Stadium Ive been to a few matches in Bacolod, including the packed Mongolia game, and one big difference between the two venues is the pre-match atmosphere.

In Rizal, at least during the Kuwait game, fans were still trickling in minutes after kick-off, while in Panaad, fans foolish enough to arrive late couldnt get in as an hour before the match the venue was already packed.

Bacolod was going gaga over the national team during the team when everybody thought Phil Younghusband, was, well, a young husband and not the top striker of the national team.

By the way, I have no idea what the PFF is planning to do for the Panaad match, but I hope taking charge of the tickets is one of them because in the last home game in Panaad, I think whoever made the estimate of the venues capacity was a little too generous.

We got first row seats but minutes before kickoff there were about five rows of folks ahead of us and during match day itself, I heard horror stories during the ticket distribution because too many fans turned up for too few tickets as, if what I heard was true, these were allocated to a local politicos allies.

Based on the folks who got into the grandstand that day, I think we were about a thousand or more over the capacity and for folks who couldnt stand standing for 90 minutes, it was a miserable experience.

I hope, this time, Bacolod takes this as a chance to show it is a goodif not betteralternative to Rizal and not just rely on it having hosted Azkals matches pre Suzuki Cup success when it wants to be considered as a venue for home games because if it doesnt improve, I fear the city that first fell in love with the Azkals will become a venue of last resort.

As for Cebu?  Politicos were talking about a stadium at the South Road Properties as early as 2004 and eight years later, were still talking.

And thats the best we can do. Talk about the home matches of the Azkals in other cities.

Fired-up booters eye Suzuki Cup Final 4

By Olmin Leyba

With expectations running higher now as a result of their historic bronze medal feat in the last AFC Challenge Cup, the Philippine Azkals will make sure they are fully equipped and thoroughly prepared when they plunge into action in the AFF Suzuki Cup later in the year.

Azkals team manager Dan Palami said the target is to once more reach the semifinals of the premier football competition among ASEAN nations, but stressed they couldnt afford a crammed buildup like the one they had prior to the Challenge Cup.

We know if we have several months to prepare, so do the other countries, which means we have to be really focused (on the preparations), Palami said during yesterdays PSA forum at Shakeys UN Avenue.

The Azkals, who placed third in the Nepal Challenge Cup despite not-so-ideal preparations, will get back on twice-a-week training by April 17 to jumpstart training for the Suzuki Cup. The meet is set in Thailand and Malaysia in November.

A 10-day camp in either Tagaytay or Cebu will be held late May to get them ready for three international friendlies set in June. The Philippine Football Federation has invited Indonesia for a June 5 fixture at Rizal Memorial, Vietnam and Thailand for a June 8 outing at the Panaad pitch in Bacolod, and China for a June 12 Independence Cup game at Rizal. So far, only China has confirmed but will supposedly send its Olympic team.

Were also scheduling two foreign camps, one in the Gulf and the other one, were still determining where, likely in Europe, sometime August. And the Long Teng Cup (in Chinese Taipei) in October will also be part of our preparations, said Palami.

The milestone finish in the Nepal Challenge Cup raised the bar of expectations further, admitted the Azkals boss.

Even before we left, we already set the bar high by saying our target was to be in the semis of the Challenge Cup and of course everybody wanted to believe us but really the expectations were not so high.

But this time, I think we have to back up our words with really strong preparations and I think everybody in the team and all stakeholders know whats at stake and what will put us to where we want to be, he said.

Palami said they are taking a two-pronged approach to sustain the Azkals momentum.
