Baguio scores draw vs NCR in Suzuki Cup

By Roderick Osis

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

BAGUIO City Football Association could have cruised atop the standing but failed to finish off a National Capital Region football Association at the BSU football grounds Sunday afternoon.

The Baguio booters could have topped the northern Luzon standing but nonetheless settled for a scoreless draw in an almost bench clearing game against NCR in the ongoing PFF Suzuki Under 23 National Cup.

We wanted to score for a win but the breaks of the game were not just on our side, said BCFA coach Cesar Balacwid.

After a scoreless first half, the Baguio-Benguet mixed squad tried to put one against the visiting NCR side but failed to slip in one of their seven shot on goals in the second half compared to capital regions one shot on goal.

The team still lacks finishing and this is one of the things were going to asses before our game against Tarlac, added Balacwid.

Yung jellying ng team is was not yet that solid kasi during practice eh we cannot have a 100 percent attendance because some of them have also commitments thats why were trying to make do with what he have during our games, Balacwid continued.

And Balacwid said they hope to work on this on April 29 also at the BSU grounds where they hope to avenge their loss against home team Tarlac after yielding a sorry 3-2 loss.

The PFF Suzuki U23 National Cup is dubbed as the local adaptation of the AFF Suzuki Cup, the most celebrated football competition organized by the Asean Football Federation for football-competing national teams in the Southeast Asian region.

The PFF earlier said with the football hype in the country, the tournament aims to search for a stronger Philippine team with the cup serving young aspirants to be the best of what they can be.

In fact, the PFF and Suzuki recently signed a memorandum of agreement for the staging of the national tournament to be staged nationwide.

THE year 2011 will go down in history as the year Baguio made its mark in the international football scene after topping the Asian leg of the Special Olympics in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia last September.

And this time around, the Stallions will not just rest on their laurels as they return to the pitch anew in preparation for the National Special Olympics to be slated this coming March.

Right now, magre-resume pa lang kami sa training and we have three new players na hopefully pwedeng isabak sa March, said coach Maribeth Jaravata of the Baguio Special kids football squad.

And it will be a long training camp for the football squad who took time out during the Christmas holidays.

Baguio FC eyes UFL 2nd Division

By Roderick Osis
Tuesday, December 27, 2011
BAGUIO Football Club (BFC) remains upbeat of another stint in the 2nd division of the United Football League which opens January 2012.
And with the core still intact, BFC coach Carl Bello said they are hoping to join the countrys largest football league as part of the 12 teams which will make up the division.

We have yet to receive the confirmation, and in case we will be taken in, will be having the core of our original line up but there will be some changes, said Bello.
Seven new clubs have been tapped by the United Football League (UFL) to participate in the league after the UFL Executive Committee decided to expand the second division to twelve teams after Nomads FC, Stallions FC and Pasargad FC were promoted to the first division, which saw seven teams last season and was won by the current cup champions, Air Force Phoenix.
The new clubs are not new to the UFL as these clubs already participated in the UFL Cup and have created a buzz amongst fans most notably, Team Socceroo FC, which was demolished by cup runner up Loyola Meralco Sparks FC 1-15 in their first match in the UFL, and Pachanga FC, which topped the infamous Group of Death featuring clubs such as Global FC, Stallions FC and fellow new club Cebu Queen United FC.
Baguio finished dead last in group A of the recent UFL Cup with a draw and two losses due to scheduling management by the tournament organizers.
The league opening on January 14 could see a changing of the guard with teams from the Armed Forces-Air Force, Army and Navy - expected to encounter tougher opposition from new UFL powerhouses Kaya-Cignal, Global and Loyola Meralco playing in the first division.
Also seeing action in the first division are Green Archers United and newly promoted sides Nomads, Stallion FC and Pasargad.
In league play, the team with the most points after playing against each squad twice in the division wins the title. A win is worth three points with a draw awarded a point.
The roster of teams in the second division has yet to be finalized with more squads expressing interest to join. The second division champion automatically gets a slot in the first division next season.

Baguio FC to finally strut wares in UFL

By Roderick Osis

Saturday, October 22, 2011

FAILING to see action in their first two games, the Baguio Football Club (FC) will finally have its first taste of the United Football League (UFL) Cup this Sunday against bracket A leader Nomads Auction Manila.

But despite the odds against the Baguio FC, team manager Carl Belo remains upbeat against the Nomad FC who already scored two victories courtesy of Lions Meltique Beef FC and Union Internacional Manila.

The team is bankrolled by eight Saint Louis University football squad members, eight members from the newly formed University of Baguio football team, four from the Baguio City National High School, one from Pines City Colleges and several foreigners in the line-up.

Were very confident with our team, the boys are hungry for the win, said Belo with the teams first game after two cancellations the last time out.

In fact, a last minute cancellation by the organizers during their supposed first game last October 9, has prompted them to play against Team Socceroo FC with celebrities Daniel Matsunaga and Fabio Ide on their side while Paolo Bediones sits as team consultant.

The visiting Baguio FC lost in a favorable home court 3-2 decision but Belo was still happy with the outcome of the game saying it was the teams first game as a team.

This is a good gauge for us because its their first time to play as a competitive squad, added Belo.

But Belo said it was an uphill battle for them to even come out with a line-up considering the city lacks a proper football arena which means Baguio would be an away team throughout the tournament.

Belo said they are a new entry in UFCAC, not having played for the past two years.

He described the BFC as very young and disciplined.

We lack the dramatics but we hope we bring in the wins, Belo said, adding winning is essential for the BFC, which is relying on their own finances for the tournament.

Victory Liner, which used to be their major sponsor, opted to become a minor one, as it has its own team now. It remains the official carrier though. The local sponsors have shied away from the BFC so far.

Twenty-eight squads are seeing action in the UFL Cup, an open competition which serves as a gateway for teams seeking a place in the UFL top flight competition beginning January.

The teams have been divided into seven groups with the top two squads from each group advancing to the Round of 16. The two No. 3 teams with the best records will claim the remaining two Round of 16 berths.

Baguio Football - Goshenland rules MGD Cup

GOSHENLAND reasserted its mastery against its rivals to claim the crown in the mens open of the Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan Football Cup Saturday morning.

After a scoreless first half, Goshen drew first blood from Homer Alinsugs goal in the 57th minute mark of the second half that took them a 2-1 romp over rival BSU Alumni at the rain drenched and muddy Melvin Jones football grounds.

Actually it was a crucial goal kasi momentum changing tsaka moral boosting na rin para sa team, said Alinsug of his goal that sent the madding crowd at the Melvin Jones celebrating.

But despite trailing early on, the Alumni came back seven minutes after Goshen scored the first goal of the game which was eventually tied after Ken Carios right atop the center of Goshens goal.

Mark Signabon, who put Baguio football back on the map after scoring a goal against the Philippine Azkals, sealed the deal for the National Mens Open bound squad after scoring the second goal for Goshen in the 78th minute mark.

Both squad played tooth and nail in the first half but Goshen had the upper hand as it controlled most of the possession but failed to send a goal at the close of 45 minute mark.

The undefeated Goshenland closed out their elimination with an emphatic 5-0 win-loss record before silencing the young Team Onse in their semis match up with a 5 -1 beating in the event co-organized by the Baguio United Football Club.

BSU Alumni, meanwhile, drubbed their younger counterparts by edging BSU Varsity in their semis match during the weekend play with a four goal difference, 5-1, in the event support by Goshenland Capitals and the Baguio United Football Club.

Goshen made it almost a 3-1 affair after Myanmar national Robert Thawng s goal was deemed illegal after officials ruled it offside.

The football cup served as an arena for public school children and other teams to have a competitive football tournament to enhance their character and football skills, according to organizers.

GOSHENLAND simply outclassed Team Onse to barge into the finals while Benguet State University Alumni avenged its earlier loss to arrange a finals match up in the mens open at the close of the first Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan Football Cup.

The undefeated Goshenland closed out their elimination with an emphatic 5-0 win-loss record before silencing the young Team Onse in their semis match up with a 5 -1 beating in the event co-organized by the Baguio United Football Club.

BSU Alumni, meanwhile, drubbed their younger counterparts by edging BSU Varsity in their semis match during the weekend play with a four goal difference, 5-1, in the event support by Goshenland Capitals.

The younger Varsity squad gearing up for the upcoming Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League earlier stung the alumni with an emphatic 6-1 victory Saturday morning in the weekly month-long tournament.

The less experienced Varsity squad, however, failed to sustain its win during the semis match in a rain soaked Melvin Jones football grounds.

Team Onse, composed of the Saint Louis University football squad, caught the last bus to the semis by edging Baguio City National High School Football Club with a 3-1 victory after the former absorbed a 2-0 beating against the BSU Varsity.

Baguio Football - Karika Cup ready to kick off weekend

EVEN WITH the strong rains expected to lash the region with Typhoon Chedeng, the monthly staging of the Karika Cup is set to push through this weekend.

Scheduled on May 28, the Karika Cup, according to organizers will push trough as scheduled, however, if strong rains hit the summer capital by Saturday, officials said they are willing to postpone the games on Sunday, May 29 also at the Melvin Jones Football grounds.

Typhoon Chedeng (international codename: Songda) was not expected to make landfall but will skirt along shores with winds stronger than 150 kilometers per hour and rainfall of 30 millimeters, the government weather bureau said.

Several teams are expected to list up for the three age groups of the competition in the 12 and under (boys and girls), 10 and under (boys and girls) and 8 and under (mixed) categories.

Entry fees for the tournament will be at P200 per team.

Karika Cup was initially organized as a birthday tournament last February but due to the good turn-out and request from parents and coaches, the tournament saw its second staging March 27.

Since then, the tournament has been transformed into Baguios grassroots football tournament catering to the 3 grassroots categories of 8-under, 10-under and 12-under with the vision of keeping Karika Cup rolling on a monthly basis so kids can play and enjoy football in a football festival setting and improve their skills.

The tournament is also a self-funded competition with volunteer referees from the Baguio United Football Club, Inc. and the continued support of the Baguio football coaches, parents and football aficionados. (Roderick Osis)
